View Full Version : The vanessa and Make-up episode
jenjen 02-28-2006, 04:34 PM You know when I was younger, I didnt' find Claire all that annoying, but watching the Cosby show now, she gets on my nerves royally.
The way she said "Vanessa was WEARING MAKE-UP"! Like she was caught in a drug bust or something! Now, I can understand not wanting your 13 year old daughter looking like she's ready to take a stroll down Sunset Blvd at 2 in the morning, but unstead of having a hissy as if that is the worst thing she can do...that you can compromise....my daughter is 14, and I SHOW her HOW to wear makeup tastefully. I allow her to wear a touch of mascara..not gobs of it...lip gloss and a pinch of nuetral eyeshadow. She's happy, I'm happy she's not looking like a whore, and I don't have to worry about her sneaking MAKE UP...OH HORRORS!!!!!!!!
Claire had a stick up her butt in that one!!!:o

Claire had her nose so high in the high she couldn;t smell her own mouth wash-lol
Sparkygirl 02-28-2006, 06:00 PM Rules are rules, Vanessa broke a rule of the house she knew about as she had TWO older sisters that had to obide by that rule.
As for worrying about that instead of more important things, I was a teenager when this show was popular and the children in my school didn't do drugs, as much as they do now, or, drink to the point of drunkedness or bring guns to school on a daily basis, but, now-a-days those type of things are common place. I think my parents would have been envious of Vanessa's parents if makup was the only MAJOR thing they had to worry about me and now my younger sibling getting into. (Just my opinion)

I so agree with you. When I was a teen, I remember doing things I knew I was told not to do. Wearing make-up was one of them. My God, Claire made it a big deal. The way she acted with Vanessa, is the way she should have acted WITH DENISE when Denise was failing college, and being a dumb, lazy brat!!!! She could have explained to Vanessa that the reason she doesn't want her wearing make-up is because Vanessa is beautiful without it. In other words, use reverse psychology, not be so mad like she found Vanessa kissing a guy in her room or something.

Although on ADW Claire did lay it into Denise about her failing grades in College.
And when I was in the 6th grade my mom wouldn't let me wear red nail polish (of all things) until I was 14. And one day I was at a friends house and I took it upon myself to polish my nails a bright red. And when I got home I was in sooo much trouble for that. So I can see why Claire would get upset, like someone else posted Vanessa had 2 older sisters and she knew the rules.

True..she broke a rule (IT WAS A STUPID RULE!) true she shouldn't break the rules, but with kids especially teens you have to pick your battles. Yes she should follow the rules, but Claire's reaction was the reaction one would have if you caught your kid smoking crack! I agree with Irene, that you can TALK to your kid about the make up, If you've been through it twice already maybe just MAYBE it's time to try a different approach. Sometimes thats why kids sneak and do what they shouldn't be doing. Of course I'm only refering to petty stuff like this NOT stuff like drugs and sex. This episode was up there with the "who broke mom's favorite vase" from the Brady Bunch!
Maybe I got annoyed because I just happen to find Claire annoying!!

Yeah, it seems that some sitcoms made huge issues abt petty stuff. I agree with you. I found Claire annoying now as an adult, as opposed when it first aired. I was 19 when it first came on. Technically I was an adult, but I am more of an adult now, then at 19. I am so annoyed with the Claire character and how she behaves. Ok, big deal, it's a rule not to wear make-up. So what if Vanessa already knew the rule. Alot of kids know the common sense rules and yet, they still violate them. kids are kids. teens are teens. Look when Rudy didn't listen to the rule abt not playing with the juicer. Look at what she caused. It could have been worse too. Claire didn't get an attitude with her. The excuse may be that Vanessa is older and should know better, but when you are a teen, you don't know better sometimes. You just go along with the crowd, peer pressure, etc. And if one remembers the episode, Vanessa's friends "conned" her into wearing the make-up by giving her all these lame excuses. Bottom line, she didn't need to jump down her throat like that.

I think the fact that she broke the rules and lied and she tried to hide it, In a very poor way I may add, That's why she got into trouble. You just don't break rules that you know are already set and then not get into trouble for breaking. There are consequences to everything, I don't care how minor or major it is, you get punished for doing things you know you have no business doing. Vanessa knew that her mom would be upset with her and yet she did it anyway. When she was in the bathroom she said that her mom didn't want her wearing makeup. But she put it on, So yeah she should have gotten into trouble for it.

I don't think she shouldn't have gotten away with it either. I never said she shouldn't get in trouble. I am saying that Claire didn't need to make a huge issue out of it. Ms. Perfect Claire already caught her...anyone would have caught her, since she still had the make-up on. The post was implying should she have made it such a huge deal by getting so upset? I think not. I have caught my youngest daughter in a lie, but I don't go getting upset abt it. I caught her and now it's time to punish her. Getting upset doesn't make the point, the eventual consequence of lying (punishment) is what the child will remember. There are so many things that kids can do that are cause for being upset...when there are petty things like putting on make-up (and what little girl doesn't want to try on make-up) just take it with a grain of salt and not get upset abt it and dish out the punishment for breaking the rule and lying.

In one episode Claire asked Rudy what one things she couldn't stand, and Rudy said it's when someone would lie. I'm the same way, the worst thing you could do to me is lie. So I believe that Claire was right in the way she handled Vanessa. You have to discipline your children or they will run over you. When you have a rule, that rule is law, once you have broken it you have to face your punishment, no matter how small the rule seem, it's a rule.

Exactly. but don't harp on the lie, dish out the punishment. Case closed. I am not going to waste any time telling someone what they already know, or should know. Now, it's time for the consequences. Screaming or yelling abt "you lied to me" etc. etc. etc. is a waste of time. It's all abt saying, "I see you lied to me and you broke a rule. Now, it's time for the consequences." My teen daughter has it in WRITING what her rules are and with those rules are the consequences listed there. So, she knows what the rules are, and she knows what exactly will be her punishment if and when she breaks those rules. That gives the teen/child time to see ahead what will happen when they disobey.

I don't think Claire was screaming at Vannesa over the make up, and as a parent I know that there will be times when I will yell at my kids when they do stupid things, it's human nature to do so. No one can't say that there hasn't been a time when they haven't raised their voice at their kids. Some times that's the only way you can get your point across, It happens and it will continue to happen.
On Roseanne she screamed at her kids all the time, she hit and kneaded DJ in the butt once LOL, she called them spoiled brats.
moeee 03-07-2006, 02:39 AM Claire had a stick up her butt in that one!!!:o
Some things never change.

Roseanne was REALITY!!!!! LOL That's why I love her and that show. I think the inconsistency regarding Claire making a big deal abt the make up/lying is what the point is. Big Deal. So what. If Roseanne's daughters (Darlene or Becky) put on make-up, she would laugh at them and tell them how ridiculous they look with that crap on their face.
Theo had his ear pierced and no big hoopla was made abt that. Cliff tried his hardest to check out his ear. I don't recall Claire yelling at Theo abt trying to hide that lie. All they did was bring the grandpa into it.
moeee 03-07-2006, 09:50 PM ....and grandpa told a lie as well!
Ireneparalegal 03-07-2006, 09:51 PM ....and grandpa told a lie as well!
Now we know why the kids lied. But only Vanessa got yelled at!!!
Brieannas21 03-07-2006, 09:55 PM Roseanne yelled at DJ for not wanting to kiss a black girl, She yelled at Becky for kissing another guy while she had a BF already. She yelled at Darlene for not putting her muddy shoes away, All those things were minor. My point is parents always yell at their kids over little things, but if it's a rule you follow it. If you don't you might get yelled at or punished.

But!!!! she was consistent!!!!!!  LMAO...she didn't pick and choose what was a big deal or not. Claire didn't yell at Theo for lying abt the piercing.

She yelled at Theo when he tossed Rudy across the room when she hit her face with the wall LOL. She yelled at Denise about her flightiness and grades on an episode of ADW. She didn't yell at Rudy but she got her point across when Rudy lied at went to the Exchange Club.
And I still don't recall Claire "yelling" at Vanessa in that episode about her makeup.
moeee 03-08-2006, 12:32 AM When Vanessa and her freinds went to Baltimore to go see the "Wretched!!!!" Clair lit a fire in her ass when they home!
Brieannas21 03-08-2006, 12:36 AM when she told off Elvin when he was surprised she was going to get the coffee.
I think we can all agree that Claire was right to put Elvin in his place. That's one character that I couldn't really stand, he got on my nerves alot.

Ireneparalegal 03-08-2006, 02:22 PM Maybe ill get you some coffee. :)
pour some whiskey in it too...
ok, she wasn't yelling...SHE HAD A COW ABT IT...LOL
As for Roseanne "kneeing" DJ in the butt, she was upset because he is 12 years old and he stole a car and was joyriding in it with his friend! I would have been pissed too. that is SOMETHING TO GET UPSET ABT...I bet Roseanne would have liked it better had DJ put on MAKE-UP!!!! LMAO!!
Brieannas21 03-08-2006, 02:47 PM I would have had a cow too if I were in her shoes. He was very rude and his way of thinking was very chauvinistic.

Mr. Cosby gave mixed signals about the show. He stated he wanted positive images on his show. But with the male bashing and chauvinistic behavior that was put across the screen I found those images more negative than positive. A lot of the interaction was unhealthy because it was always about men and women pulling rank on each other.
As for the makeup episode Clair had every fleshly right to be angry for her child defying her. She made it clear no makeup until she reaches a certain age and put it on thinking she can get away with it. The Baltimore episode Clair was enraged to a point of giving Vanessa a beat down. I felt her anger on that episode.
Ireneparalegal 03-08-2006, 03:22 PM I would have had a cow too if I were in her shoes. He was very rude and his way of thinking was very chauvinistic.
No, I meant she didn't YELL at Vanessa. She had a COW with Vanessa. Which was the topic to begin with. There were reasons like the concert, the marijuana joint, etc. to warrant having a cow...putting on make-up, ok, be upset abt the lying and deceiving, but to equate that with taking off to a concert, having a joint.. etc. does not even compare. I would rather DEAL IN A CALM MANNER with a child wearing make-up than deal with a child doing drugs, running off to a strange town, stealing a car, hanging out with friends who do drugs, etc. If my child only wore make-up and that was the only issue I would ever have to deal with as a mother, than I THANK GOD, it's not something worse.

I totally agree
Scoobiedoo30 03-10-2006, 12:30 AM The Make Up episode of The Cosby Show was my Favorite episode of The Cosby Show
Furienna 05-14-2007, 08:36 PM I was sickened by that episode too. Vanessa got into trouble for doing something that minor, and she still went saying "I'm sorry, Mum..." What are you sorry about, Vanessa? That you have the guts to have a mind of your own? GRRRRRR! I just hate it, when sitcom parents feel, that if they tell the children to jump, they should only ask how high. Such a thing would never fly on a Swedish TV show. And Claire was a bitch.
About Elvin and the coffee... I know this is off topic, but I totally have to defend Elvin. He just couldn't picture successfull lawyer Claire doing something so housewifely, not after having been treated like dirt by his future father-in-law. And for what? Just because he approved of housewives and didn't like that his own mum worked? Well, I approve of housewives too. Am I betraying my sisters then? And what about my mother, who's been a housewife her entire marriage? Isn't she worth anything because of that? Elvin was no big deal. I even find him kind of cute. Kenny was probably worse, really. Not to mention his brother.
