EmoJoe 02-18-2006, 09:17 PM GIRLS SPOILERS:
About the set.. and Mandisa's performance: (from KelsAdorkable)
"Mandisa started the show off with a very uptempo song..which was what every singer needs to do if they open a show. Must have audience on their feet...guess it sets the mood. Speaking of set, Idol actually spent money on the set this year. Makes last year look like they pulled it out of the junk yard. Seriously. They have a HUUUUUGE screen right behind the stage, and a staircase leading up to the red room which was completely remodeled as well. Anyway, Mandisa sang a CLASSSIC song by Heart called "Never". Everyone and their dog knows she can sing, and she did exactly that. I expected nothing short of spectacular from her, and I wasn't disappointed. Randy started off by saying " Wow wow wow..what a way to start off the show..that was hot!" Simon said it wasn't a "perfect vocal..particularly in the middle"..but he does think she has a "unbelievably personality" and to basically expect her in the final rounds. So now im questioning WHY I didn't put her in the "top 4"..why did I rank Kellie higher? I honestly don't know....I didn't come out of there with the thought of her on my mind. So that leads me to the likeability factor that complicates thing.. Kellie is more likeable..which, I guess will ultimately hurt Mandisa in the long run. Overall, vocally, probably 4th place..but America might put her 5th."
** Performance Order may not be fully Accurate **
Mandisa :: "Never." (Heart)
Mandisa started it off..she was kinda pitchy in a few parts. I think she was just oversinging, so its not like she couldn't hit the notes. She was pretty good, but I'm not certain if Simon was including her in the top 4 or not. I wouldn't think so. I personally think Kellie took Mandisa's spot in the top 4 even though she was really nervous.
Ayla :: "Reflection." (Christina Aguliera)
Ayla sang "Refection" by Christina Aguilera. Good song...vocally very challenging. But not a smart choice for her, as ambitious as it is. There's no way she could do that song as good as Christina does... BUT, she was good...she didn't butcher it. Randy was pleasantly surprised. Simon thinks she's a "hard worker" and that from singing this song, they've discovered her vocal limits for as how high as she can go (she does crack for a second as she changes to falsetto). He also said for the first time, he saw some emotion in her, which he says is very important since he said in the beginning rounds that she was very robotic. And so this time was more real. Overall, just average for me. Honestly, besides the gap between the top 5 and the rest of the 12.... from 6th place to 10th, everyone is pretty neck to neck. It all just comes down to who is a favorite.
Heather :: "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." (Ai4 Finalists)
Heather Cox sang 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me'...obviously made known by the idols last year. In my opinion, a REALLY crappy song choice. I remember her a little bit from previous rounds, and I had expected her to bring it tonight, and I don't think she did. Simon thought she played it safe, was forgetable, and that her personality evaporated by saying " No one will remember that performance" And to put it frankly, I didn't besides knowing the song choice...I had to listen back to audio that I recorded to even remember if she was good or simply average.
Becky :: "Because the Night." (Patti LaBelle) ?? i think..
This is all I have to say.....Becky is BEAUTIFUL. Phew, okay, glad I got that out! hehe original.gif But really, gorgeous gorgeous woman. She sang "Because Of The Night" by I believe 10,000 Maniacs. Really good song choice...song choice can unfortunately make or break you... and I do believe that this song will get her through to the next round. The judges agreed that she did better than they had imagined she'd do. Simon thinks her vocals were a 6.5/10 and that he doesnt think 'quite good' is good enough in this competition anymore...that you just have to be GREAT. Overall, he thought it was just OK..so I'd probably place her 7th or 8th. I hope she can get better in the weeks to come.
Kellie :: "How Far." (Martina McBride)
KelsAdorkable says she was her 4th favorite of the night. Although she had some pitch problems with the high notes, she was still very good .. and Simon says she is likeable. However, I think her choice was WAY too predictable ... and I really thought it was cheap. (that's me though)
Paris :: "Midnight Train to Georgia."
She says she's great. I think it's a WONDERFUL choice for her. heart.gif In the top 4. (of the night)
Stevie :: "To Where You Are." (Josh Gracin)
Simon says one of the weakest of the night ... a complete utter mess. crying.gif I really hope she stays because she brings something DIFFERENT to the table and doesn't go fully predictable like some people. original.gif
Lisa :: "I'm Changing." (Jennifer Holiday)
Simon says "You made the people 5 and 6 years older than you look ordinary." Basically, she's in the Top 4 of his performances. Spazz.
Brenna :: "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." (Stevie Wonder)
Oh lord..Brenna is SOMETHING ELSE. I swear, for the two hours that they were taping, not once had I looked over at her and she wasn't doing some sort of pose for the camera. She reminds me in a way like Mikalah (very outspoken), except like, 8 years older, hogs the camera, thinks very highly of herself, and isn't exactly fun loving in the nice way that Mikalah is. And despite me basically HATING her, well, she doesnt suck vocally. I hadn't quite figured out WHY Simon likes her personality so much until last night when it was brought to our attention that miss Brenna and Simon Cowell himself have something in common...their BIRTHDATE. I guess October 7th (?) is 'become the next simon' birthdate? I don't know. Anywho..she sang " You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Stevie Wonder. Randy basically thought it was a safe performance, and that she needs to stick to her 'attitude performances because that's who she is'. Simon contradicted Paula's comment about needing to eat a little "humble pie" and said that she didn't need to, that she needs to just be who she is because that's what people apparently like about her. However, he thought she did horrible and compared her to a wild cat that was forced into wearing gloves. In the end, It all comes down to what America makes of her. She could be going home Thursday, or maybe not...I wouldn't place her any higher than 9th though. ( based on THAT performance, that is) We'll see what next week brings. I really hope she goes home... she doesn't respect anyone and I think this choice was very very cheap.
Melissa Mcghee ::
Kinnik :: heart.gif heart.gif "Get Here." Oleta Adams -- Danian vickers sang this in Ci3, Group 4 semifinals.
Kinnik is completely new to me. I don't recall her from any previous auditions besides the fact that she was the last woman to make the top 24. She is the second to last woman to perform and she sings "Get Here" by Oleta Adams. Randy thought the middle of the song was really ruff as she was sharp through most of that part. He rated her as a 6/10. Paula said something along the lines of having 2 or 3 pitchy parts at worst, but that she's a classy woman regardless. And she is, as expected for her age. Simon said that her problem isn't the pitchs, its " that we've seen 1 or 2 quite stunning performances from very young girls who we got really excited about....and with somebody like you, who's 28 years old, very elegant, very real...it was a very cabaret (sp?) performance and we've heard this a million times across American Idol. Not once did I sit here and think 'Wow' , where did this girl come from?" So then he basically summed it up and said, " You are being overshadowed by the younger contenders tonight..and that is going to hurt you". My note - Which is why I also overlooked Mandisa, as she IS one of the older contenders. I'm pleased that she did goodish since AI did not give her enough airtime and gave some other poeple camerahogging time. I really hope she stays though. I love this song as well. heart.gif Hopefully she stays though..
Katharine :: "Since I Fell For You." (Barbra Streisand)
Simon says best of the night and she ends the night. Well, that tells it all. Welcome to next week, Katharine. original.gif
I didn't see anything on Melisa McGhee, sorry guys .. but here's all the spoilers I know. Thank you KelsAdorkable for providing these! Remember the performance order is not fully accurate except for Mandisa, Ayla, Kinnik & Katharine
EmoJoe 02-18-2006, 10:56 PM added kellie
EmoJoe 02-18-2006, 10:57 PM kinda OT, but the girls and boys performances rounds will be 2 HOURS and Thursday's results show will be 1 HOUR :)
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 12:04 PM SPOILERS FROM SOMEONE WHO WENT (on IDF)
Mandisa started the show off with a very uptempo song..which was what every singer needs to do if they open a show. Must have audience on their feet...guess it sets the mood. Speaking of set, Idol actually spent money on the set this year. Makes last year look like they pulled it out of the junk yard. Seriously. EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 12:47 PM im hearing "midnight train to georgia" for paris now...so im not sure what to believe
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:02 PM more...Paris was AMAZING! I went in there looking forward to her performance, and she didn't disappoint. She's incredibly short too, so was not expecting that. But she knew how to work the stage like a pro, I was very impressed...lots of energy. She sang "Midnight Train To Georgia' and in my opinion, had the 3rd best performance of the night. Paula thought she reminded her of Fantasia. Simon said she " had the likeability factor. It's not about being good, it's about being great...and that was great!"
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:07 PM ]Katharine had the best performance of the night (saved the best for last)..she was amazing! She sang a song original sang by Barbara Streisand called 'Since I Fell For You'.
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:08 PM Kellie is just, adorable. I love that she's very "virgin" to everything going on around her. She's taking everything in as much as she can, and she seems very genuinely interested. Every time I looked over at her in the coke room she had her head sticking out over the top of the couch to try and get a look at whatever was going on. But anyway, on to her singing....she sang "How Far" by Martina McBride. I wasn't familiar with the song, but I felt very captivated by it. She was very very nervous, as I have mentioned. She got a tad pitchy on the high notes, but I still think it was overall a very good performance. I hope the tv portrays the performance as it sounded live..because some people unfortunately DO sound different on tv than they do in person. Simon said that she started off better than she ended it..but did mention that however she does "have the likeability factor" and that her song "was important to be heartfelt and it WAS heartfelt..it felt sincere..and that's what we've always liked about you"...she "potentially has a very good voice" and "thought she did very very well'. So for that, I ranked her 4th.
Cactus Jack 02-19-2006, 01:10 PM Awesome, thanks fpr posting those!!!:D
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:11 PM I personally thought Stevie was the worst of all of them. And I promise i'm not being biased. I went in there with an open mind for everyone. She picked an opera song ( 'To Where You Are' by Josh Groban? )and sang most of it in her falsetto (and possibly out of tune). It just wasn't all that good. I wouldn't be surprised if she went home Thursday. Simon said " I think you completely and utterly messed that up".
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:14 PM This is all I have to say.....Becky is BEAUTIFUL. Phew, okay, glad I got that out! hehe. But really, gorgeous gorgeous woman.
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:15 PM Lisa Lisa Lisa...she is just this adorable, small framed, poised 16 year old. I LOVE her. In my opinion, the second best performance of the night! ( Her mom even cried - soo cute!) She sang, "I'm Changing" by Jennifer Holiday. Lots and lots of additude and control in this song..showed off a side I hadn't completely seen before from her. Simon said "she made the girls who are 5 or 6 years older than her look ordinary".
Cactus Jack 02-19-2006, 01:16 PM Awesome thanks for posting those!!:D
Cant wait!
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:18 PM ^no problem :)
Heather Cox sang 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me'...obviously made known by the idols last year. In my opinion, a REALLY crappy song choice. Cactus Jack 02-19-2006, 01:27 PM yeah, and she supposedly sucked at it :-/
Yup, I saw that
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 01:58 PM my opinion on the spoilers..
-i cant believe mandisa chose a heart song. i was expecting her to choose something more soul like. instead she chose an 80s rock song. hmm
-i could actually see ayla doing very well with "reflection". it suits her voice nicely. im glad she actually showed some emotion, thats what i've been waiting to see.
-wow...bad song choice heather. she better be crossing her fingers that her performance sounds better on TV...because she has a limited amount of fans as it is.
-yay for katherine being the best
-glad to see paris did well, i was starting to lose faith in her
-same goes for lisa and kellie
-one word for stevie: OUCH
-i think stevie and kinnik will be the ones to be booted on thursday. for kinnik, brenna could also go, but at least brenna has a clear personality. kinnik doesn't, so therefore, she'll go along with stevie, since they got no airtime, so they dont have a fanbase, and since they performed badly, they won't have anyone voting for them...
Cactus Jack 02-19-2006, 02:02 PM ^ Ditto
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 02:04 PM i was just thinking...if the top 24 stage is huge...imagine what the top 12 stage is gonna be like...

And aww poor Stevie :(
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 03:01 PM last spoiler :D
They always do a little recap of each performer before they go onstage. And they actually did a really good job of the recaps. They show a few clips of their auditions and then they talk about the song they are going to be singing. For Melissa, this recap was much needed. I didn't know who she was until they briefly showed parts of her audition, and then I was like, OK..I remember her..she was decent. (Simon said she was not good enough) So she HAD to have improved further in the competition. ( Simon then said during another audition "in my opinion, that was the best performance of the day...brilliant". So from all that, I was like, WOW, I can't wait to see what she's come up with now that it's been MONTHS. So her song choice for last night was " When The Lights Go Down" by Faith Hill. I'll start off by saying she is a stand out, and the tone of her voice is incredible..very beautiful. Randy thought she started off a little shaky with pitch problems but pulled it through in the end...overall he thought it was just alright. Simon felt like he was in the middle... and said "before your performance tonight, I just never would have remembered you for whatever reason". She commented back about the reason he didn't remember her is because she never got air time. So he replied, "apart from that, I think you've been overshadowed by some of the bigger personalities". Continuing on, " That may be your problem, because I think you actually sang that better than a lot of the other girls tonight" And then follows up with " You're sort of lifeless...and that worries me.....but you sang it well". So it seems like she is one of the better half of the contestants, probably slap dab in the middle of them around 7th..but she is constantly getting stronger...all she needs is to work on her personality.
EmoJoe 02-19-2006, 03:02 PM WOW, interesting spoilers! YAY FOR KATHARINE!!!
And aww poor Stevie :(
-*Forever*- 02-19-2006, 03:43 PM Voting my ASS off for Heather and Melissa, even if they blow. I just cannot stand to see Ayla getting into this top 12. The perfect 6 girls for me are Katharine, Heather, Melissa, Kellie, Becky, and ... actually, I want Brenna in. Or Paris.

Randy: Good performance but i've seen better. I saw nerves. You didnt hit some notes, but it was good. Nice ending
Paula: You're very likeable, great quality, you sand your heart out, but you lost your personality a little in the verses
Simon:It was heartfelt, you're not a stage school monster. You have a great likeabilty factor, you did well.

David 02-21-2006, 09:57 PM Simon is being such an ass to Stevie! Gosh, she knows she did bad, she doesn't need it mentioned to her every second!
EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 09:57 PM Stevie Scott
"To Where You Are"- Josh Grobin
shes really low in the beginning...she gets a little higher. its not AWFUL vocally, but its just really blah. its like...yeah not good. i think she should try out for opera. i feel bad for her, cause she has a great personality, but her voice is barely top 24 worthy, not to mention top 12 worthy. like....5/10
Randy: It was different, but it was boring. It didnt capture my attention. Not emotional. I didnt get it
Paula: You took a risk, you took that song and you did the right thing with that song. Not a great choice but you did the right thing with that song. Your also different
Simon: You completely and utterly messed that up. It was like a child singing out of tune at a sunday brunch. It was a complete mess
i feel bad for her...:(. i think she'll get the symphany vote.
EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 09:59 PM Simon is being such an ass to Stevie! Gosh, she knows she did bad, she doesn't need it mentioned to her every second!

David 02-21-2006, 10:05 PM HAHA Simon's comment was funny.
EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 10:07 PM Brenna Gethers
"You Are the Sunshine of My Life"- Stevie Wonder
its just ok vocally. not an "OMG" performance. its not awful, just nothing special. she picks it up towards the end. 7/10
Randy: You chose a safe song. The big note saved you. It was better at the end but not good enough. You didnt showcase your personality.
Paula: It was safe, but you redeemed yourself during the performance.
Simon: Completley and utterly horrible. Your like a wild cat who just got gloves, coat, and hats put on you. It was something you would hear in her hotel. (Brenna talks back and disagrees)
They were both born on October 7th :p
lol she said "we were born in different centries"

Heart Shaped Box 02-21-2006, 10:11 PM I didn't really like Stevie that much tonight. She didn't sing that good. :(
David 02-21-2006, 10:14 PM Aww Season 4 memories :)
David 02-21-2006, 10:15 PM Overall, she sounds kind of off. The high notes aren't quite hit, and she's pretty flat throughout. Not as good as I hoped from her =/
EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 10:17 PM Heather Cox
"When You Tell Me That You Love Me"
you could barely hear her at first. its not that good for me...she doesnt belt it but its not horrible. she gets better near the bridge and final chorus. its not BAD, but its not GREAT. eh...7/10
Randy: I expected better. Really boring. I wanted to hear something else. Didn't work for me.
Paula: Started off rough, you impressed me in Hollywood, but this wasnt great.
Simon: Very forgettable. It was horrible. You just got it wrong. No one will remember that performance

EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 10:29 PM Melissa McGhee
"When the Lights Go Down"- Faith Hill
she reminds me of my art teacher for some reason. starts off ok. she brings it by the middle. overall, im impressed. she could pull a Kelly/LaToya/Bo. 9/10
Randy: Started rocky, but you worked it out by the middle of the song. Wasnt amazing, but it showed you have a great voice. It was "aight"
Paula: It was a shining moment for you. You have a sexy sultry stand-out voice. Incredible tone of your voice. You made a popular song your own. Amazing
Simon: I dont remember you. [Melissa: Because i got no airtime...]. You were overshadowed, but you sang better then others. Your lifeless. That worries me.
i thought she was good.
EmoJoe 02-21-2006, 10:35 PM Lisa Tucker
"I Need a Hand" or something
hmm the song is interesting. sounds broadway-ish. but its good. strong vocals. very impressed overal!!! awesome last note. dawg pound is "wooting" lol. 9.5/10
Randy: Ambitious song choice, especially for a 16-year-old. Rough start, but you worked it out. Props to you, RIGHT DAWG POUND??! [Dawg pound woot]
Paula: You have a precious gift. Your 16 and you have the gift.
Simon: You made girls 5-6 years old then you just look ordniary. We'll look back at this and remember it.

brenna is making faces, like she did with stevie. how mean...
Randy: The middle was very sharp, I give you a 6. Not that good
Paula: Some sharp notes, so what? Powerful performance, lovely job
Simon: We've seen 1 or 2 quite stunning performances from younger girls. We've found incredible young talent. You're 28, and it was very caverue (??) we've heard it a million times on American Idol. It wasnt wow. Your being overshadowed by the younger contestants.

TVFanatic82 02-23-2006, 01:48 AM Katharine is definitely my favorite of the girls. I also love Paris and Lisa, they are VERY talented young girls. As for the others, some are good and some are not that great. Stevie Scott did the worst and NEEDS to go! She was absolutely boring to me and has no personality it seems.
