What needs to be deleted and any idea how to get rid of the 2 Adware that keeps taking over IE?
Thanks,
D
robyrob 02-18-2006, 07:53 PM are you using more than one antivirus program? you should pick ONE and stick with it, just make sure that you keep it up-to-date (it looks like you have McAfee installed, but if it were up-to-date and functioning properly, it would be able to remove half of the stuff you have in there)
also, up-to-date versions of Antispyware and Spybot should be able to remove some of this stuff if you run them IN SAFEMODE (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml)
make SURE that Internet Explorer is closed the entire time during the removal process
Microsoft Antispyware is now called Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en)- try downloading and running that and the free version of the ewido security suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
you'll need to download the Vundofix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
- Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
- You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
- When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
- Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
- Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
SurfSideKick removal instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic9549.html
Deskwizz (DH.dll) removal is best handled with the adware/spyware removal programs, i'm still looking for good removal instrusctions...
you should probably install Mike's Adblocking Hosts file (http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html), and i would even manually add in the URL addresses of the bad stuff referenced in your HJT log, so it can't connect and download more stuff onto your PC.
run Hijack this again and make sure all of these are gone:
Running processes:
C:\windows\winsysban9.exe - you need to make sure that this process is NOT running when you are trying to remove this stuff - do a Control-Alt-Delete and close this process on the processes tab
fix ALL of these:

Ags2000 02-18-2006, 11:05 PM I have been running different thing all day to get rid of all of this. Currently, I am still having problems with pop ups (not as bad though) and the only thing that pops up is the first time opening IE after restaring the computer McAfee says it has detected and deleted it is something called "newfrn.exe"
Everything I read says that is part of the SurfSideKick, but as far as I can tell, I have removed it.
I am going to try all of the stuff you posted.
The most annoying thing right now is the webpage keeps refreshing with HUGE ads on the top and bottom as well as just opening ads and other pages at random.
As for the virus protection, they didn't have anything on here until I just loaded McAfee on here. Some guy had this computer upgrading the memory for them. I don't know if all of these virus' were on here before or not, but I know I never had this much trouble on this computer before.
I'll keep you posted. By the way, this is the current HijackThis report:

robyrob 02-18-2006, 11:17 PM you still have active components of the Vundo Trojan on there - if you have run the Vundofix and its still on there, it may be one of the newer, much nastier variants - i would suggest that you go to the spyware forums for further help
apparently it may be installing a root kit to prevent if from being detected (or removed), yet Winfixer is still in there

That was before I took off Vundo. This is the latest after taking off Vundo and running the Adware, Spyware, and Mike's Adblocking Hosts file. It seems to be working good. No ads, pop ups, or other websites opening.

robyrob 02-19-2006, 12:17 AM you still need to remove the UCmore Search Accelerator,
Remove the folder
C:\Program Files\TheSearchAccelerator\
There is an Add/Remove Programs option to uninstall it, but it leaves behind an empty 'UCmore' folder in Program Files, and keys HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\53CBEE82-D747-11D3-9ED0-005004189684 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\UCmore in the registry (which you can remove manually if you feel comfortable doing)
you need to try to close the winsysban9.exe process that is still running then search for it in the Windows folder and rename or remove it

robyrob 02-19-2006, 10:42 AM you still have Winfixer on there which is part of the Vundo trojan/hijacker - and if you dont eliminate it 100% it will put all of that other crap back in there eventually
What is WinFixer?
WinFixer - is a bogus antispyware and spam blocking application that attempts to market itself by surreptitiously installing adware on the workstation. This adware aggressively and incessantly displays popup notifications in an attempt to convince the user that something (other than its own existence) may be amiss with the computer.
The problem is typically initiated via a popup ad displayed during a visit to a distributing web site. Reports suggest that this initial popup is constructed such that any attempt to dismiss it (including clicking the 'X' in the upper right-hand corner) actually causes the adware to be installed on the workstation. From this point on, WinFixer popups are launched from the workstation itself. Because of the intricate way in which the adware insinuates itself into its host (including making dozens of registry edits), successful removal is a tedious, manual process (as of Dec 2005). When running, it can be found in Windows Task Manager and stopped, but before long it will start up again.

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Spyware_Information/Winfixer_Removal.html
http://www.spyware-removal-guideline.com/winfixer-removal
the obvious signs that it is still in there (and you may want to go back into safemode and actually delete these files manually before attempting to remove it again) are:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinFixer2006] "C:\Program Files\WinFixer_2006\uwfx6.exe" /scan
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinFixer] C:\Program Files\WinFixer_2006\uwfx6.exe /min
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winszd32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winszd32.dll
from what I have been reading, the newest variants of the Vundo Trojan use a Rootkit to hide the running processes of the trojan from windows and all removal tools - in other words, it could have a TON of things running but you would have know way of seeing (or stopping them)

Okay, thanks Rob. I'll let my sister know. (I'm back home now) That Winfixer was put on her computer by the guy that upgraded her memory. Most of this has happened since then, that makes since now. I'll go over step by step instructions on how to delete it for her. I appreciate all your help.
