View Full Version : Is being depressed about not having a Valentine only a Teenage Thing?

I was wondering does that-"I'm sad because I don;t have a Valentine" kind of fade away when you reach the age of 20? I mean i used to be sad on VD when i was in 9th grade but for someone to be depressed about not having a valentine in their 20's seems silly to me. What do you think?

I don't think it is a teenage thing. When you're alone, you are alone. Some people are happy about being alone, others get depressed.

At work there used to be female employees who would cry all day on Valentine's Day because they didn't have a sweetheart. Other women would have flowers, balloons, or something delivered to work from their boyfriends and husbands, and that would just fuel the fire. Eventually most of these women took VD off as a personal paid holiday.

I can understand adults being sad on Valentine's Day. Many are sad over relationships that didn't work out or just not finding someone.

Everywhere you look -- stores, tv, print ads, radio -- it's all about love and couples on Valentine's Day. There's no escaping it.

I feel the same way on Mother's Day since my mother passed away. There's a two to three week buildup for the big day. Everyone's talking about what they're doing for their mother.

It's not easy sitting on the sidelines seeing others so happy about something when you can't participate, be it Valentine's Days, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays...or any holiday for that matter. Some people have no family or loved ones to spend any holiday together.

Yeah i guess as long as you don;t see anything Valentine's Day related you are ok, like today I'm at work so I don;t expect to see any valentine day ballons or anything because i work with all men. then I will go home and that will be it. But it was different in highschool because they had Valentine's day Dances and u had no choice but to be sad because it was all up in your face-lol

I thought I was OK with it (I'm 23), but apparently I'm a little more sad than I thought. Mostly it's from the regret of not being with someone right now...makes it even more depressing for me.

I think that if there weren't constant reminders and all these ads didn't act like if you don't have someone to buy you flowers/candy/jewelry/whatever, then you can't participate and you're a loser. Which is awful. I was at the store yesterday picking up a last minute VD card, and they had cards for friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers....not just sweethearts. But do they advertise those? Not really.

I'd like to think that everybody has at least one person that they can say loves them, so they should celebrate that instead of getting all mopey about some dumb chocolate/card company holiday.

I prefer to be alone on Valentines day so I can prank call the people with dates.

It's hell being single--especially on Valentines Day--when u go out and see a bunch of couples out on dates and everything! And makin out, talkin about havin sex......

Anyway, the answer to your question would be no. I've heard of people in their 20's who get really depressed being single on Valentine's day. Being alone is hurtful......at any age.

I don't think it's just a teenaged thing although I never quite understood the need to get depressed over Valentine's Day. This is my first year ever with someone to share this day with (and I'm not going to even be seeing him because he's at home and I'm at school) but I was never one to be upset about this day. In fact, even now, I still think it is an overrated, pointless, Hallmark holiday.

that it's worse for adults because many women are worried about their biological clocks. I remember being depressed one Valentines Day because I didn't know anyone on campus. It wasn't the couples that bothered me, it was that everyone seemed to have groups of friends to celebrate with, also. I like to view Valentines Day as a day for anyone you love, even your friends and family.

If you're single, Valentine's Day can be a little annoying at any age.

When I was a single lady I would always buy my mother a big Valentines day candy heart. That always made me feel good.

Damn...what's up with that? I get complimented a lot, and I still have too low of a self-esteem.

well if that's the case you need professional help because why would someone still feel bad about themselves if they are being complimented. unless you are being complimented by ugly guys and old men-lol

You know what? That's ALWAYS what I've been wondering!!!

All these girls in my school.....oh and my sister too......have been called "hot" and beautiful so many times it's not even funny! And you know? They STILL complain "Oh, I'm SO ugly!". I get so tired of hearing that! How can someone who constatnly gets complimented by boys STILL think they're ugly???????????????

It really is a self-esteem thing. That and I don't think most girls are completely 100% happy with how they look. My boyfriend is always telling me that I am beautiful and while I know he means it, there are those times where, in my head, I have trouble believing it.

EXACTLY. I get the same thing from mine...and I still tell him I'm fat.

I don't care if the hottest guy in the world tells me I'm hot...I'll either think he's lying, or he's trying too hard. It's more about how you feel about yourself, not about how other people see you. Sure, I like compliments, but when you play that self-hate game, it's not a cureall.

And please...no one ever rely on a guy to make them feel pretty!

I thought a person only has self esteem if they recieved NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
