(STATE COLLEGE) -- AccuWeather.com is forecasting the winter storm that has moved into the Mid-Atlantic will develop into a full-blown blizzard by tonight.
The leading edge of the system has already moved into Virginia, and snow has begun to fall in Washington D.C and the surrounding area. Senior Meteorologist Gerald Mohler says the timetable for the storm's arrival in the major cities of the Northeast has slowed slightly. AccuWeather.com is now forecasting the following arrival times:
Baltimore by noon
Philadelphia by early afternoon
New York City by early evening
Boston by early Sundayhttp://sirocco.accuweather.com/iwxpage/adc/popup/iws1_430.jpg
Mohler says this storm is still a fast moving system, expecting it will last for ten to twelve hours before moving on. That will mean that snow will fall at the rate of 1-2" per hour in the areas where the heaviest snowfall is forecast. According to Mohler there is a possibility the region from east of Washington/Baltimore through southern and central New Jersey could receive more than the forecast 6-12", perhaps as much as 15 or 16 inches.
Despite the small deviation in the timing of the storm, the target path of its core has not changed. The major cities along the I-95 corridor are still in the crosshairs of the heaviest snowfall forecast from this storm system.
Washington D.C. -- 6 to 10 inches
Philadelphia -- 6 to 12 inches
New York City -- 6 to 12 inches
Boston -- 6 to 12 inchesAccuWeather.com Community Director & Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell reports these snowfall amounts overnight:
North Carolina: 5"
Kentucky: 4"
Arkansas: 3"
Georgia: 1"
West Virginia: TraceFerrell also reports places in PA & NY overnight received up to 2" from unrelated snow showers.
Once the system reaches the Atlantic coast it will tap into the enormous energy stored in the atmosphere over the mild ocean water. That energy could cause a rapid intensification of the storm later tonight, creating the blizzard conditions along the coast to the north and east of New York City. Mohler is forecasting 35-40 mph winds with higher gusts will create blinding, windswept conditions across southern and eastern New England overnight tonight and into Sunday.
This storm will lead to widespread travel problems across the Northeast. Behind the system, lake effect snow will develop across the southern Great Lakes. According to Mohler there has been minor snowfall overnight to the south of Lake Ontario, along the I-90 corridor between Buffalo and Rochester NY. By Sunday there will be lake effect snow to the lee of Lake Erie. Snow has also been falling in Chicago, and more is forecast for today. While most of the snowfall behind the storm will be small compared to the amounts along the East Coast, the combination of snow and wind will create bands of hazardous driving conditions.
Travelers can expect numerous flight delays and cancellations at the major airports in the Northeast, as airport crews attempt to keep runways open and planes de-iced. Any delays or cancellations will have a domino effect at other airports around the country.
http://sirocco.accuweather.com/iwxpage/adc/popup/iws6_430.jpg
AccuWeather.com is forecasting this storm will have a longer lasting impact than just the snow it will deposit on the Northeast. In effect, this system will open up the gates that have been holding back the Arctic air for most of the past two months. The very cold air will funnel south, by the middle of next week it will reach the Central Plains, and even Texas and the Deep South will feel the chill. The Winter Center meteorologists are forecasting that the second half of February could be as cold as any February we have experienced in quite some time.
The bitter cold that is forecast for the remainder of this month also has the potential to create a number of winter storms. Right now it is too soon to forecast if they will be as potent as this weekend's storm, but certainly they will bring more snow than the country saw over the first half of this winter. [/LEFT]
Babes_Cat 02-11-2006, 12:48 PM boston... oh joy. why can't we ever have a snowstorm on a monday or tuesday night?
Stormtracker TF 02-11-2006, 12:55 PM I'm expecting to see some HUGE accumulations from this storm in the Boston Area and the Suburbs of NYC, I wouldn't be suprised to see 20 inches fall in spots, possibly more. NYC is probably going to see wind gusts nearing 60 mph. That combined with snow falling at 3 inches per hour (and in some cases more) is going to make a mess. Visibility would be about 25-50 feet. Same for the coastal areas of Massachusetts.
Brian Damage 02-11-2006, 12:56 PM I despise snow.
Chelsea 02-11-2006, 01:11 PM I love snow.
That being said, they had originally forcasted up to 7 inches here, but we only got 3...and with a few exceptions, that was grass-only (IE: Not on roads)
Last night I started making preparations for the blizzard.
Okay, actually I went out and got drunk, but at the bar I made a list of things I have to do today to prepare for the massive snowfall.
1. DVDs from Blockbuster
2. Groceries
3. Something to read
If things get really bad, I plan on using my roommate as firewood.
;)
Pavan 02-11-2006, 01:24 PM 12 inches plus coming here! It's about time. December was a good month (12 inches plus). January was pathetic (1-2 inches).
Brian Damage 02-11-2006, 01:37 PM I don't get what is all the love for snow? It is extremely dangerous if you have to drive in it and who likes shoveling snow? I guess for kids it is ok because you can skip school, but for an adult, it should suck royally.

I couldn't agree with you more Brian. That's exactly how I feel. I hate snow and winter time for that matter.
EmoJoe 02-11-2006, 03:06 PM we're getting 6-12 inches :D
EmoJoe 02-11-2006, 03:07 PM I don't get what is all the love for snow? It is extremely dangerous if you have to drive in it and who likes shoveling snow? I guess for kids it is ok because you can skip school, but for an adult, it should suck royally.
not everyone has to hate snow...my mom likes it. she thinks that when the snow is first on the ground it looks nice. besides, i just find it exciting and fun
Mr. Stefani 02-11-2006, 03:07 PM Not looking foward to this. I can't drive my car in the snow so i'll be stuck here for a few days. i'm going to go nuts.

I hate snow with a passion for the reasons you mentioned. Sure, a little snow during the Christmas season is nice, but getting snow up your knees or beyond is nothing but a pain in the ass.
Mr. Stefani 02-11-2006, 03:27 PM I hate snow with a passion for the reasons you mentioned. Sure, a little snow during the Christmas season is nice, but getting snow up your knees or beyond is nothing but a pain in the ass.
I have to shovel at least 6 houses, all with big walkways and driveways. I feel bad cause all my neighbors are older and can't really do it, so every year i'm out there doing eveyones. it sucks.
spunkygirl 02-11-2006, 03:35 PM Is it going to hit Central Ohio really hard? I hope not :(
MaydayMalonesGirl 02-11-2006, 03:41 PM We're in a heavy snow warning here for 8-13 inches. I'm excited, I miss the snow. I wish this could've come during the week, though.
Mr. Television 02-11-2006, 03:57 PM It's snowing now. :woohoo:
spunkygirl 02-11-2006, 04:01 PM I'm sick of snow :cuss: Bring on the warm weather :D

You can bring yours over to me. The more the merrier..
Brian Damage 02-11-2006, 04:28 PM I hate snow with a passion for the reasons you mentioned. Sure, a little snow during the Christmas season is nice, but getting snow up your knees or beyond is nothing but a pain in the ass.
Exactly, sure some around Christmas is fine, but I find it completely illogical for an adult with responsibilities to really love it. No offense to anyone, but shovelling a foot of snow off of your walkway and drive way isn't fun. Driving on snowy, slushy, icy and slippery roads aren't fun. (Especially if you don't have 4 wheel drive) When the snow plow comes down our street, it plows towards my side, so that is even more snow to remove. Sure, it looks nice and pretty at first, but after a day or two of cold weather, it all becomes ice and extremely slippery.
Fleet 02-11-2006, 04:35 PM Really nice weather out here today. The warm Santa Ana winds just started blowing again and it's 77 degrees. :)
I think I'll go for an evening bike ride. ;)

Fleet 02-11-2006, 04:40 PM :mumble: ;)
Don't worry. I do take advantage of the warm weather. The windows in the house are open, I put a car in the driveway and wash it and go for bike rides.
I better enjoy it because I know we'll get "cold" weather (anything under 60 degrees) sooner or later.
gilligan fanatic 02-11-2006, 04:41 PM we are suppose to get a foot tonight. Its snowing and raining here in VA now though. We still have two snow days left so this might be our only chance to use them. Exams are over so I don't really care if we use them now.
friendsfan77 02-11-2006, 06:06 PM ugh I wish it would snow down here.
EmoJoe 02-11-2006, 06:21 PM we just had a power outage because of it. or something related to it. but its all better now
Stormtracker TF 02-11-2006, 06:27 PM I hate snow too outside of the Christmas Holiday time, but there's something about a big storm that makes me like it. Otherwise, it's crappy. Like today when I had to drive in the 3 or so inches we got from lake-effect snow.
Stormtracker TF 02-11-2006, 06:28 PM Is it going to hit Central Ohio really hard? I hope not :(
An inch or two at best is all Central Ohio should get. I'd be really surprised if any more fell.
theshark8777 02-11-2006, 06:32 PM Is it going to hit Central Ohio really hard? I hope not :(
I don't think we are to get much here in Northern Ohio, which is fine. The lake effect we get is bad enough.
EmoJoe 02-11-2006, 06:33 PM An inch or two at best is all Central Ohio should get. I'd be really surprised if any more fell.

dawsongirl 02-11-2006, 11:58 PM And again we get squat. lol...oh well, right now's a bad time anyway. Come in March.
dawsongirl 02-12-2006, 12:01 AM ugh I wish it would snow down here.
In Duluth? I'm guessing that's not where you are now. Because it's been snowing up there for days.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 02-12-2006, 12:09 AM It just started snowing here about 20 minutes ago YAY!!!!!!!:D

LOL! Down here the entire state shuts down at the mere mention of snow. There has been numerous snow showers tonight with some localized spots getting up to an inch(so sad and pathetic), but it's the most snow for some people in a few years. A few flurries here but nothing else.
Mr. Stefani 02-12-2006, 04:31 AM everyone drive careful in this crap.....my front bumper is done for. i was driving home and little sports car+front wheel drive+all this snow= me hitting car infront of me(aka my sister thankfully). not fun.
friendsfan77 02-12-2006, 05:45 AM In Duluth? I'm guessing that's not where you are now. Because it's been snowing up there for days.
Oh, my bad... I live in Duluth, GA  .... not Minnesota, sometimes I do wish I lived in the midwest again... I lived in Indianapolis for 6 years. Snow was great. This winter in Georgia, all we've had is a crappy ice storm.
Your friendly neighborhood TJL spent the evening tracking the storm from the safety of his local pub and as of five minutes ago, New York City has about 2 inches of snow on the ground. But the streets are covered, and if this does continue through the night and into tomorrow as the weathermen are saying; we could have us a fine blizzard in the big apple.
dawsongirl 02-12-2006, 05:51 AM Oh, my bad... I live in Duluth, GA  .... not Minnesota, sometimes I do wish I lived in the midwest again... I lived in Indianapolis for 6 years. Snow was great. This winter in Georgia, all we've had is a crappy ice storm.
Oh! I didn't know there was a Duluth, GA.
Yeah, I don't think winter is winter without cold and snow.
friendsfan77 02-12-2006, 05:56 AM LOL! Down here the entire state shuts down at the mere mention of snow. There has been numerous snow showers tonight with some localized spots getting up to an inch(so sad and pathetic), but it's the most snow for some people in a few years. A few flurries here but nothing else.
I know, same thing happens here in Georgia... nothing will have even fallen out of the sky yet, and every school district (except the one I used to go to when I went to high school here) will close, people will rush to the grocery store to get stuff... and what will happen afterwards? Sometimes we'll get stuff, sometimes we'll get NOTHING. Although in the farther north counties of GA... they got 1-2" of snow, while further south it just rained coldly like crazy. It looks beautiful up there on the news. Lucky people. This winter sucked here. ohno:
Although the last time we had a significant snowfall with accumluation was in January 2002... about 4" fell. After that in the following years, we got snow in winter once or twice, but then it would just melt real fast. Then in Jan of '05 we got one hell of an ice storm, then several weeks ago we had another one. I guess I just miss the beauty of snow... the way it looked when it falls out of the sky, and when I lived in Indy, the white Christmases we had... not all the shoveling, slipping on ice, and getting into accidents and slide-offs on the road. Although when I still lived in GA when I was very young, in 1993 we had a blizzard in March.
Be careful, y'all that are getting it. I remember several time it snowed like crazy in Indy and my mom would have to get up early for work and literally shovel her way to the car.
Things are getting more bizarre here in NYC, if that's possible.
We've got snow - and thunder and lighting!
I kid you not.
If this is armageddon, then the last round is on me.

Ags2000 02-12-2006, 07:22 PM Well, it's not snowing down here, but it IS the coldest we've been since it snowed down here in South Texas in 2004. We were down to 29 last night and were under a freeze warning until 9 this morning. I know it doesn't compare to all that snow, but this cold in Feb here is NUTS.
D
Brian Damage 02-12-2006, 09:28 PM Well, the snow has stopped here in NY and it looks like we got close to 2 feet of snow. At 12 noon, I started shoveling and didn't get finished til around 6pm. My clothes were completely soaked. My body feels like I was hit by a car. There is still some shoveling left to do, not much but still. I have got to ask this question again, what adult actually loves this ****? And if you do, please give me a logical reason why. Do you work? Have any place to go? Do you have to shovel? What makes you get excited for this slop? There just can't be a logical answer. My father is in his sixties and was out there shoveling. He has a torn rotator cuff and a bad back. Oh Joy! Snow!

I don't get it either. The only thing I can think of is that the only people who love tons and tons of snow must not have to deal with it. Even so. I don't have to shovel or drive in it, but I worry about my loved ones who do have to deal with it.
A big storm like this usually takes lives, be it accidents, heart attacks due to shoveling, etc.
I know my brother has to drive home from work tonight. The roads are a mess, and I'm worried about him.
It's also no fun being snowed in for days either.
I wouldn't wish this hell on my worst enemy. I haven't loved huge snowstorms since I was a kid.
Czas na Zywiec 02-12-2006, 09:42 PM No snow in sight over here! It got pretty damn cold up in the mountains (-1F/-16C in Gunnison!) but once I got into Denver, it was up in the 50s. We don't get blizzards around here until about May.

I hate to drive in it. I don't mind shoveling. I absolutely hate driving in it, but it was just gonna hang around for a weekend that I wasn't doing anything it wouldnt bother me. Other than that I could do without it.
dawsongirl 02-12-2006, 09:54 PM Don't you people have snowblowers?

Yes, I have one, but the snow was so damn high that you had to shovel the first foot of snow before actually using it.
Janice 02-12-2006, 10:07 PM Don't you people have snowblowers?
Unfortunately, snowblowers don't shovel your car out of two feet of snow, or shovel porch stairs, that sort of thing.
Mr. Stefani 02-12-2006, 10:12 PM our power was out for 5 hours. not fun.

Fleet 02-12-2006, 10:51 PM I live near the Chesapeake Bay, so I am a little closer than that. ;)
Yeah, well I live closer to Mary Ann than you! ;)
gilligan fanatic 02-12-2006, 10:56 PM did you get to meet her? That is lucky if you did.
I might not have met her, but I got an autographed pic off of her site.

Of course I've met her... she's in my house, remember?
Yes, she was at an autograph show back in Oct., 2003. I hope she will be at it again- I want to see her again!
Here's another pic:

that is so cool. I am going to have to come to your house to meet her. :D
I wish she would come to a DC convention. There never seems to be any TV celebrities in DC.
I think I saw your shirt on the E True Hollywood Story-lol.

That shirt is probably available on her website. She was selling it at the show; also same thing on a mousepad.
BTW, I've actually met her twice. At the second show, after she was done signing autographs, she passed by me in the lobby. She sees the shirt I was wearing (the same one- I wore the "Mary Ann" shirt at both shows) and she said to me, "Good choice!"
I didn't expect to see her so I didn't know what to say. I should have said, "It's no contest." :)

Okay, you better start leaving now- you have a long drive.
Yeah, too bad more celebs don't go to DC.
That style shirt has been out for quite a few years. I think it should have been done the same way, but with a small pic of both castaways.

Tina probably wouldn't allow it. :snob:
gilligan fanatic 02-12-2006, 11:21 PM Tina probably wouldn't allow it. :snob:
you are probably right. If you look in my avatar at Ginger you will notice she is a blond. She wouldn't let her self be made into a cartoon like the others so they had to change her hair color to be different.

You're right... I didn't think of that. It would have made the shirt even better, though.
