View Full Version : How many people tell the cashier to keep the change if it's under 5 cents?
TVFactFan 02-06-2006, 10:59 AM I always tell the cashier to keep the change if it's 4 cents or less because it's nothing I can do with pennies. Pennies can;t even go in a vending machine. So is there anyone who still accepts change even if it's under a NICKEL?
*MIBabe03* 02-06-2006, 11:42 AM Sometimes I'll tell them to keep it. It just depends on if I'm in a hurry or not.

It should go both ways, though rarely do the stores cut YOU a break with a one cent difference.
If my item is $1.46 and they want to give me 4 pennies instead of a nickel, hey I'm taking it. They should give me the damn nickel instead of me GVING them 4 cents or making me put 4 pennies in my pocket. They are making profit.
Buy if my change is 1 or 2 cents, they can keep it.
And if an item is one penny over- like $1.01 - and they give me 99 cents back instead of saying "don't worry about it", they will never get a cent from me again at that store.
That pisses me off to no end.

they just showed someone on the NEWS the other day getting busted on CAMERA for stealing from the "take-a-penny" dish at some local convenience store....
lockdown06 02-06-2006, 02:19 PM I usually let them keep the pennies. But if its a store that wont let me slide for a penny or 2. Or they dont have a "take-a-penny" dish. Ill throw the pennies in the floor of my truck.
seventies_sitcoms 02-06-2006, 03:26 PM In this day and age I keep every cent. When I get too many coins I wrap them up and deposit them at the bank.

I just always hated having pennies in my pocket-lol It's been a long time since I was able to buy something with a penny

True. You can't buy crap with a penny today, but I just took about $120 worth of pennies and nickels to the bank.
Usually, I'll let the cashier keep the change if it's under 25 cents. Can't do anything with less than 25 cents worth of dimes, nickels, and pennies. A phone call is 25 cents minimum.
Chocoholic 02-06-2006, 05:36 PM One time, a guy told me I could keep the change and it was a whole dollar :D
I don't usually bother telling them to keep the change. I hardly use cash anymore to begin with.

Well I guess I forgot, I don't memorize every thread I start. I only started this one because the cashier was shocked this morning I said keep 4 cents
Mijada 02-06-2006, 08:17 PM No, I keep all my money. The stores charge too much for stuff as it is.
I keep the change. It goes into a glass, which I take to the coinstar machine when it's full. I use the extra cash to buy groceries.
Yes, my life is that freakin boring.
;)

I was going to mention the same thing to you too Solomon, but I seen activity on the thread.
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 02-06-2006, 08:23 PM Nah I keep all the pennies I can, for when I play Pokeno! :D

Having worked as a cashier back in the day and also a night manager at a restaurant, it's not always easy for the cashier to give a nickel instead of 4 pennies. Some establishments are very strict in their cash register policy, if you are over or short, even by a penny, you can be written up. I once was over 75 cents in my register and I was written up. This girl I knew who worked at another place, was short 15 cents and she too was written up. They do this because it has nothing to do with store profit. They do it because when a cashier is short in $$ in the drawer, they need to be written up, therefore, the same holds true for anyone who is over; the philosophy is, you are not counting correctly, therefore, you are either cheating the store or cheating the customer. When someone told me to keep the change, I would put it aside and then let the manager know abt it, this way when he or she counted the drawer, as long as the drawer was even, then the extra change wouldn't count against you.
Mr. Stefani 02-06-2006, 08:39 PM When I was working as a cashier, i'd put the change people didn't want to the side or throw it out. It brings your numbers over, which isn't good.

dang, i even used the same stupid joke
AllIWantIsYourClutch 02-06-2006, 09:48 PM I hate hate hate hate hate when people do that to me. Because then when my register gets counted and I'm off a few cents, it's not good.

Exactly.
Courtnee 02-06-2006, 10:51 PM I take it. I put it in a jar or something
Ireneparalegal 02-07-2006, 12:38 PM Wasn't the amt in the thread originally "4 cents"?
Dude111 01-07-2025, 12:45 AM Sometimes I dont want all the change so I let them keep it.... (Sometimes around 30,40 cents or more)
TheLittleFaerie 01-07-2025, 07:37 AM I'm surprised the penny is still in circulation, and everything's not rounded off to a nickel, seeing as how NOTHING cost under 5 cents anymore. I can't even remember the last time anything I bought cost like $2.01 or $7.03, etc....
Dude111 01-07-2025, 08:54 AM I remember hearing by 1999 the penny wouldnt be used anymore but it still is..
