View Full Version : Movies with shocking/disturbing storylines??
Brad Russ 02-02-2006, 01:48 PM What are some of the movies you've seen that had the most shocking storylines?? Here are some of the most controversial, and disturbing films Iv'e ever seen. Some of them I didn't even give a description of, simply because there's no way to describe them in just a word or two. Some movies are just too controversial for words.
South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut
The Woodsman: (pedophilia)
Saved
The Crying Game: (transgender love)
Bastard Out of Carolina: (pedophilia)
Spanking The Monkey (incest)
Birth
Osama: (oppression/terrorism/torture)
Taxi Driver: (underraged prostitution)
L.I.E. (pedophilia)
At Close Range (domestic murder)

Bastard Out of Carolina is a movie that I seen when it first came on television. Now, when they rerun the movie, they have edited out that scene with the step-father and the girl when she is in the car with him in the front seat. They totally cut out the part where it is clearly obvious he is touching her in certain parts and molesting her overall. Now, they just show the girl going to the front seat and then next thing you know, she is seen crying and going to the back seat.
That movie is very disturbing just for the whippings alone. It is a powerful movie.
Osama: My brother in law told me abt this movie. I was glad to see it, just to know how blessed I am to live here in America. It makes anything you think is bad in your country, not bad at all.
The Audition: It's a movie that is so graphic in violence, it is hard to explain. Here is a link for it...it also tells you if you don't want to be spoiled by the plot, to stop reading it, for it will somewhat ruin it for you if you intend to watch it without knowing what is going on. The movie at first is kinda slow, but it turns CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Bastard Out of Carolina was one of the hardest movies to watch that Iv'e ever seen. I had to look away during the molestation scene, because even though it was just simulated, it looked way too real for me. I was so happy when the girls biological father found out his girl had been beaten by that guy, and he kicked his ass. That's one of the few times Iv'e ever gotten up during a movie, and punched right along with the character, as if I was beating on the jerk myself. The ending of the movie pissed me off, when the mother caught the bastard molesting the girl, and still took him back after that. Unfortunately though, that's the way it often goes in real life.
Osama was a disturbing movie, but it was good that someone made it, because it exposed the Taliban for what they truly are, and that's something that all these terrorist sympathizers out there needed to see. If anyone can watch that movie, and still sympathize with the Taliban afterwards, then in my opinion, there is something seriously wrong with them. That last scene with that old guy entering the room, (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about), was disturbing beyond words!!
I haven't seen that other movie you mentioned, but I'll check out the link you provided, and see what it's all about.
The Chauffeur 02-02-2006, 02:35 PM GUMMO....so bad I don't even want to talk about it
Ireneparalegal 02-02-2006, 10:49 PM DEATH WISH MOVIES. The first one I have seen over and over. The rape and beating and murder scene of the wife and daughter is something that is gruesome and horrific, no matter how many times I see it. I know it's vital to the plot of the movie, to show how something horrific happened to this man, and set him off to become this vigilante.
Ok, but to make a second, third and fourth sequel showing something horrific happen to the friends, family, girlfriend of this man, is just too whacked. It made a joke of the first movie by releasing those sequels.
Dean Winchester 02-02-2006, 10:53 PM I swear there was a movie out a few years back that tackled the subject of necrophilia, I never took time out to watch it though, lol

when I was a kid and The Crying Game came out, I couldn't believe that was a man. Looking at it through adult eyes, I am shocked I never couldn't tell he wasn't anything besides male.
Saved was shocking but funny. South Park has never strived to be anything less than shocking and disturbing
Dean Winchester 02-02-2006, 10:55 PM another disturbing one was Flowers In The Attic, an insestuous love story between a brother and sister
Brad Russ 02-02-2006, 11:46 PM I swear there was a movie out a few years back that tackled the subject of necrophilia, I never took time out to watch it though, lol
I remember when that movie came out, but I can't remember the name of it. Siskel and Ebert reviewed it, and I believe Ebert actually gave it a thumbs up. That was one movie I was not at all interested in seeing either.
There was also a very controversial film that came out in 1996 I believe, called Happiness. It was directed by Todd Solondz, the guy who did Welcome To The Dollhouse, and apparantely it was a pretty controversial one as well.
Dean Winchester 02-02-2006, 11:50 PM there's another one called Harry And Max that stars Bryce Johnson from Popular that explores incest, pedophilia and homosexuality all in one quick swoop... a love story between a 16 year old and his 25 year old brother., if only there was some prostitution and necrophilia there as well, and if one of the characters was a transvestite
James"Thunder"Early 02-02-2006, 11:54 PM Veronica Guerin, it was really shocking to me what happened to her at the end. I knew it was true story, but it was really scary to see it played out in the movie. It's a really good movie though.
Ireneparalegal 02-03-2006, 12:01 AM I seen a movie on cable called Ted Bundy. Yes, it's abt the serial killer. This movie however is an independent film that of course, was able to show things here that they couldn't do in the television version. For some reason, it had humor in parts of the movie, I can't figure out why. But the brutality inflicted upon the victims was shown (as real as you can get with a movie) and it was HORRIBLE. They also touched on the characteristic (if you want to call it that) of Bundy who enjoyed necrophilia. It had scenes where he would return to the bodies. It was gruesome.
Brian Damage 02-03-2006, 12:07 AM Old Boy
Battle Royale
The Woodsman
Mysterious Skin
Lolita
Brad Russ 02-03-2006, 12:12 AM if only there was some prostitution and necrophilia there as well, and if one of the characters was a transvestite

 Yikes, I got chills just reading your description of that movie. I don't think I'll be adding that one to my to see list anytime soon!!

I forgot to mention the ending. They showed Bundy being prepared to go to the electric chair and they showed how the prisoners are prepared by getting their head shaved, their leg, etc. but it WENT FURTHER. Ok, um, it showed how they must prepare his body when it is electrocuted. His body will eject fluids and other matter, if you know what I mean, so they showed him being "packed".
Dean Winchester 02-03-2006, 12:16 AM not so much a "shocking movie" since it's a slasher, but there are two scenes in Halloween II I always must fast-forward through... the scene where he kills the woman by drowning her in the scalding water as we see her skin peel off, and the scene where we discover the dead doctor with the needle straight in his eye. Both scenes make me want to :barf::barf::barf:
Ireneparalegal 02-03-2006, 12:20 AM The Passion of the Christ: No doubt, the torture and the crucifixion scenes were horrible and hard to watch. It's very disturbing to know that our Lord went thru that. I flinched and closed my eyes at one point during the torture. I have never done that for any movie.
Ireneparalegal 02-03-2006, 12:21 AM The Exorcist. What can I say that no one already knows. But I am really disturbed with the use of the crucifix for certain scenes. Horrible.
Brad Russ 02-03-2006, 01:04 AM The Exorcist. What can I say that no one already knows. But I am really disturbed with the use of the crucifix for certain scenes. Horrible.
I just saw that movie for the first time a couple months ago, and it's the only horror movie Iv'e ever seen, that like seriously disturbed me. Especially the part where she started screaming out all those vulgarities at the Priest, in that horrible demonic voice. That was some crazy ****!!
I had the same reaction to The Passion. Throughout half of the flaggelation scenes, I had my eyes closed, and through the other half, I was squinting, with my eyes only partially opened. The sounds alone, were enough to make me wince.
Janice 02-03-2006, 02:01 AM Seven
Frailty
The Shining
The Pianist
Schindler's List
The Boys Of St. Vincent
Open Water
Ireneparalegal 02-03-2006, 02:09 AM Amistad. I seen this movie for the first time abt three weeks ago. this movie abt a spanish slave ship which carried African people to their destination in America to be sold as slaves. This movie makes "Roots" look like a kids movie. I can't even think of words or adjectives to describe it. It was surreal. Showing the slaves in the bottom of the ship chained up, with throw-up everywhere, a mother holding her screaming baby (that scene was very upsetting) trying to keep the baby from getting wet from the sea water that was pouring in from the storm outside. It was just horrible. It gave me the same chills in my body as did "Roots" back in the 70's; except this was ten times worse!
The Chauffeur 02-03-2006, 03:04 PM Kids was a pretty disturbing (made by the same guy who made Gummo *sudder*) did anyone see that?
Mr. Stefani 02-03-2006, 03:38 PM The South Park movie and Saved are probably the 2 funniest movies i've seen.
Dean Winchester 02-03-2006, 03:42 PM I agree. Some people took Saved as sacreligious... I don't see it at all. The story is very pro-Christian, just anti-fundamentalists. If you've ever gone to a Catholic/Christian school, you totally understand and identify with this movie. Once the movie ended, you saw that the movie was very pro-Christianity, just a knock on those who proclaim themselves to be Christians, but yet are among the most judgmental and hypocritical people you've ever seen (which is only a small fraction of Christians, but a very loud and vocal minority). The story is totally a spoof on people who profess Christianity, but don't know the first thing about being a Christian, like Mandy Moore's character.
HuntingtonM15 02-03-2006, 03:56 PM Boys Don't Cry. The last scene is almost too difficult to even watch.

an awesome movie. A must see for everyone.
American History X is another everyone should watch.\
Both make you open your eyes a little bit.
Brad Russ 02-04-2006, 03:20 AM The South Park movie and Saved are probably the 2 funniest movies i've seen.
The South Park movie was hilarious!! I watched the movie a few days ago, and that's actually what gave me the idea for this thread. My favorite part of the movie was when Satan started singing about how he was misunderstood, and just wanted to be excepted. That part always cracks me up. Here's the lyrics.
Artist: Southpark
Song: Satan the dark prince - up there
Album: South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut
Sometimes I think, when I look up real high
That there is such a big world up there
I'd like to give it a try.
But then I sink, cuz it is here I'm supposed to stay.
But I get so lonely down here, tell me why's it have to be that way?
Up there,
there is so much room,
where babies burp and flowers bloom.
Everyone dreams, I can dream too.
Up there, up where the skies are ocean blue.
I can be safe and live without a care,
up there
They say I don't belong
I must stay below alone.
Because of my beliefs I'm supposed to stay where evil is sown
But what is evil anyway?
is there reason to the rhyme?
Without evil there can be no good,
So it must be good to be evil sometimes.
Up there,
there is so much room,
where babies burp and flowers bloom.
Everyone dreams, I can dream too.
Up there, up where the skies are ocean blue.
I can be safe and live without a care
live without a care
If only I coud live up there.
I wanna live
I wanna live up there
Ooh baby, ooh
I want to live up there.
The Chauffeur 02-04-2006, 10:11 AM an awesome movie. A must see for everyone.
American History X is another everyone should watch.\

I agree to a point about Kids..while it's a pretty sobering look at AIDS among teens, it's pretty graphic. Not everyone could handle that one.
American History X is pretty awesome as well!
lockdown06 02-04-2006, 05:15 PM Althou they might not be able to handle it they should still watch it.
Not many can handle the Curbstomping scene in American History X.
Brian Damage 02-07-2006, 12:46 AM It has been called, "The most controversial movie in America." It is an independant film that stars Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66) and Chloë Sevigny (Kids)
It is about Bud Clay, a motorcycle racer on his way from New Hampshire to California in a van. The cross-country trip includes stops at a gas station, where Clay meets and falls for a gas station attendant named Violet (Anna Vareschi); a roadside food stand, where he meets the sadly beautiful Lilly (Cheryl Tiegs, making her feature-film debut); and the Las Vegas strip, where he picks up local prostitute Rose (Elizabeth Blake). As he comes into contact with these women, he can't let go of his past, which centers around Daisy (Chloe Sevigny), whom he hopes to find when he returns home to Los Angeles.
It was banned in most cities here in the US for its content. The big controversy was Cloe gives Gall REAL felatio on camera.
Ireneparalegal 02-07-2006, 12:51 AM Boys Don't Cry. The last scene is almost too difficult to even watch.
OMG, how did I forget that movie???? That is an awesome movie. But very disturbing to know that it is based on a real-life incident. Unfortunately, the ending wasn't what happened in real-life. There was a black male adult who was killed, along with Brandon and of course the girl who was played by Lecy Goranson. The guy was a friend of the girl and he just happened to be visiting and spending the night at her house instead of staying at a hotel. Talk abt being in the wrong place at the wrong time. so sad.
American History X is another movie I have seen and I was just hypnotized during the beginning regarding the stomping scene, so horrific and disturbing. Also the scene in the grocery store, that just makes me so mad.
Also, Party Monster, an independent film that was critically acclaimed for Macauley Culkin. It's a true story of a guy who killed another guy over drug money. But the story is abt the killer before he committed that crime and how he became a legend in New York for his underground parties and all the club kids who wanted to be part of that. Very disturbing movie in regards to the drug use, violence and the kids who felt they only had each other in this group.

His name was Michael Alig. I use to hang out with him at the Limelight and the Palladium in NYC.

that's his name. I couldn't remember it. Really???? OMG, that's crazy. Was he always crazy???
I remember seeing him when he was on the Geraldo Show. The fact that him and his mother are so blase (sp?) abt the murder he committed makes what he did even more pathetic and disturbing. Sick individual.

The movie was certainly a stretch to who he really was. Yes, he was flamboyant, but in private, he was really down to earth. He wasn't as out there as Macauly Culkin played him to be. It was the drugs like acid, ecstacy and Special K that made him paranoid.

The billboard ad for the Brown Bunny had a pic of the "scene" in which you refer to. I have seen the pic on the net, but I can't post it here, it would get deleted, I know.

Wow, that just further adds to the tragedy. The worst part of that scene for me is watching Lecy's character get killed right in front of her young daughter.
Mr. Stefani 02-07-2006, 01:39 AM speaking of shocking..I think i'm the only idiot that didn't know that they all died in the end of The Perfect Storm. I watched that last night. I sat there like what the hell thats not supposed to happen:lol:

LOL!!! so funny.
Ireneparalegal 02-07-2006, 12:52 PM MONSTER with Charlize Theron. That movie was so disturbing, but yet, it made me understand a lot more abt Aileen Wournos life on the streets. It was so powerful to me, I went out and bought the DVD the next day. The title of the movie implies she is a monster, but in reality, it's the demons this person was given from the first moment she came into this world and was dehumanized by one man after another. Made to feel she is worthless and hopeless.
The only time I bought a movie that quick was when Passion of the Christ was finally released on DVD and there I was buying my copy.
Another movie is CRASH with James Spader. I can't stand this actor, and this movie just made me hate him more. He is creepy to me and this movie just made him even more creepy. This movie is abt a group of people who have been involved in an auto accident at one time or another, and they now are part of a "support" group that gets together and gets "aroused" watching car accidents, real or unreal. There is a lot of sexual scenes and there is one involving Holly Hunter & Rosanna Arquette. Arquette's character is wearing a special leg brace from a car accident injury. It's really weird. James Spader is shown making love to his girlfriend after causing her to have a car accident. This is one whacked out movie.

that's the reason I didn't bother watching it... why root for a movie where they ALL die? I mean, movies like that have casualties, but when every character croaks, it's just too much IMO. Why make you root for them to survive for 2 hours when none of them pulls through?

I was wondering what the mix-up was. That's why I put so much details in my post so others wouldn't confuse it with the other "Crash."
Ireneparalegal 02-08-2006, 01:04 PM I am adding three movies to the list. They each deal with domestic violence:

Iv'e been considering seeing that film for quite some time now, but have put it off. Iv'e read alot about it, and have heard it's pretty depressing. It's airing on Encore in a couple days, and after hearing some of your guys' thoughts on it, I think I'll finally check it out. It sounds like a definite eye opener for sure.

a really sad footnote to the story is that Tracey and Buck's son has followed in Daddy's footsteps, he's currently in jail for domestic violence. It's really sad that he saw how his father has screwed his mother up for life... and even then, decides to carry on the creep footsteps of his father. It's really sad. You know Tracey must feel very sorrowful knowing that her son is doing the same thing as her husband did. If I had come from such a family, I would make sure that I never hit a woman when you consider the living hell Tracey's life was.
All in all, one of the best tv movies made, and Nancy McKeon really proved right then and there that she was not going to be typecast as Jo.

Really? where did u find this info? I had tried to find any updates on her. That is soooooo sad. It goes to show how domestic violence is indeed a cycle and everyone is a victim. This reminds me of that lady who shot and killed her son's molester (Ellie Nesler) and now her son is in prison for murder. The damage these bastards inflict goes on and on.

Here is are more I don't think anybody mentioned.
Last House on the Left (1972)- Girls are kidnapped, humiliated, and murdered in the woods. The parents kill off the gang who did it.
Fight for Your Life (1977). I've never seen this. A gang breaks into a black family's home and do some not very nice things. I can't vouch for this flick.
Death Weekend (1976) A trio of hoodlums breaks into a rich doctor's weekend home, murder him, and girlfriend of the weekend Brenda Vacarro must defend herself against the guys.
Movies seemed to be more mean-spirited in the 70's.
-*Forever*- 02-09-2006, 11:31 PM Oh my God, almost half these movies listed are movies owned and loved by my best friend. That has to say something about her
Anyway, the two most disturbing movies, to me, are A Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream - also favorites of my best friend! They both just disturbed the hell out of me, more Clockwork Orange than RFAD, which I've sat through four times. Clockwork Orange, I don't think I could stand to ever watch a scene from again. It was so disturbing.

I totally know what you mean. I had heard alot about A Clockwork Orange, and a few months back, I decided I was going to watch it. Well, I watched about 10 minutes of it, and I had to turn it off. That scene at the beginning with the homeless guy made me sick, and I wasn't able to make it much further. I think that's one of the only movies I ever stopped watching, simply out of disgust. I'll never attempt to watch that film again!!
Brian Damage 02-09-2006, 11:42 PM Ken Park is a film that has been tied to alot of controversy. There are explicit sex scenes with teenagers. It was by the same director who did the movie Kids.

I think Bully, starring Brad Renfro kind of falls into that same category in some ways. I haven't seen the two films you mentioned, but by your description, they remind me alot of Bully, which was also a pretty controversial film.

Well Kids, Ken Park and Bully were done by the same director, Larry Clark. Apparently, Clark has a fetish with young nudity and sex.

Really??? Wow, I had no idea whatsoever that it was the same director, I could just see the similarities based on your words. That's strange.
savageamusement 02-10-2006, 04:52 AM THe last one I saw that was really disturbing was Frailty....

So, I guess this guy may be into child porn and this is a way for him to get away with "filming" stuff like this????
I too was going to add Reqium for a Dream which had an effect on me ever since I seen it couple of years ago. Ellen Burstyn is a mother addicted to pills, her son addicted to drugs and the son's girlfriend turns to drugs as well and eventually lowers herself to do some "kinky" stuff with an audience of men watching so she can support her habit. The movie is in general the horrors of drug abuse and it has some of the scariest scenes for a "drug" movie. Jared Leto plays the son; because of his constant needle injections in his arm with heroin, there is a scene where he must go to the emergency room for this grotesque, sickening, disgusting looking infection that has appeared on his forearm. It is HIDEOUS!!!!!!! Hell, if that doesn't make you never want to do drugs, I don't know what will. Maybe the part of the movie where his arm has to be amputated?????

There is a director Victor Salva who served time in prison for being a child molestor. He directed films such as Clown House, Powder, and Jeepers Creepers I think.

yea, I refuse to see his movies. Clownhouse is definately the worst because the lead character of that movie is the kid he molested.

Ok, so I am on to something here. These guys are using their status as a movie director to film "child pornography". Now how the hell can they (film directors) get away with that, while other molesters who film children naked, take photos, etc. are jailed for doing the exact same thing?
Roman Polanski, anyone????? I can't watch any of his latest pics for the same reason.

Can you believe that girl has forgiven him and says he should be allowed to return to the United States? I wonder what Sharon Tate would've thought all about this if she wasn't murdered. Would he have done something to their son if he had been born? Makes you wonder.

The last time I heard something from her, she was still hurt that he is allowed to roam free and not own up to his past. She deserves justice and he needs to know that he and others can't just run away. the fact that Hollywood still "loves" this director is what is shocking to me. If Hollywood will embrace a child molester, they will embrace anybody.

It deals with the Mexican Mafia and the violence, drugs, prison life etc. Shows how a young group of guys end up growing up in Folsom State Prison as the leaders of this notorious and ruthless gang that does exist in there, in Los Angeles and other locations. The movie is nothing but sadness, hate, corruption, etc. As a matter of fact, this movie is based on the gang itself, and when it was released in 1991, the actual leader of the mexican mafia had one of the character actress in the movie killed because he felt the movie was portraying him in a negative light!!! The producers including the star, Edward James Olmos, deny they were portraying this particular gangster, since the movie is fiction, based on some facts of the gang. But the leader was infuriated and he sent out a "hit" on some of the actors in the movie. One was murdered. She played a small part in the movie. The part of a mother.
