View Full Version : Is it disrespectful to call your parents by their first name?
GARFIELDKOOL 01-29-2006, 09:02 PM I personally think it is. I know quite a few people that does this. They say it's nothing and the parents don't mind. That is not the point. Parents and kids does not need to be buddies. That needs to be separated. I couldn't imagine calling my parents, especially my mother by her first name. I say call your parents Mom and Dad.
Polniaczek033 01-29-2006, 09:06 PM i don't really think it matters.
i call my parents by their first names when i can't get their attention, or when we're in public and if i yell "mom" 15 different ladies turn around.
i call my friend's parents and my boyfriend's parents by their first names though. and my band teacher, haha.
James"Thunder"Early 01-29-2006, 09:10 PM I don't think so, I call my mom by her first name, I don't know why, but I have done that since I could talk. I've known some kids who's parents make them call them by their first name.
GARFIELDKOOL 01-29-2006, 09:16 PM i don't really think it matters.

Yes, I think it matters. You should refer your parents as mom and dad, whether you can get their attention or not. It is the principal of the matter. They don't need the kids to call them by their names, they deserve that respect as mom and dad. My father was never there for me, but I would never call him by his first name.
TVFactFan 01-29-2006, 09:17 PM My mom thinks it's disrepectful that I call my Aunts by their first name. Instead of saying Aunt Rhonda, Aunt Cheryl, and Aunt Lorie, I just always say-"Hey Lorie or Hey Rhonda.. So is that disrespectful? Someone let me know
Janice 01-29-2006, 09:20 PM I used to call my parents by their first names occasionally as a term of endearment. But no, they were/are my parents, and I called them Mom and Dad.

robyrob 01-29-2006, 09:26 PM like i always tell MY mom - if she can't get MY name right, why should I bother getting HERS right :cuss:
(too many brothers)
Courtnee 01-29-2006, 09:33 PM my parents would kill me if i ever called them by there first name!
MaydayMalonesGirl 01-29-2006, 09:55 PM Parents and kids does not need to be buddies. That needs to be separated.
How do you figure that? My parents are basically my two best friends at this point. I know for a fact that if they just played the parental card 24/7 I wouldn't respect them nearly as much as I do now. I love that we can be stupid and sarcastic and they don't get bent out of shape about it.
Back to the question, I've given my parents plenty of names other than mom and dad. loll, I totally went through a phase where I would call my dad nothing but Jehovah.
I'm ****ing crazy, I know. But it's fun.
stella 01-29-2006, 09:58 PM What about your parents-in-law?
Do you address them by:
1) Their first names?, or
2) Mr. and Mrs. _____?, or
3) Mom and Dad?
The Chauffeur 01-29-2006, 10:02 PM Nah, I call my mom Floozy  Her name is Suzie

I am not married. But, my relationships I have had in the past, I have called them Mr. and Mrs.
G-Force Glockstar 01-29-2006, 10:11 PM I wouldn't care if my kids called me by my first name.

i'm not married, but i call my boyfriend's parents dorrin and patty (their names.) but sometimes when we're all out at dinner or something i call them mom and dad. they don't mind, they consider me their daughter in law.
Polniaczek033 01-29-2006, 10:16 PM I wouldn't care if my kids called me by my first name.
i wouldn't either.
Mr. Television 01-29-2006, 10:18 PM I would have got smacked.
Nighthawk76 01-29-2006, 10:20 PM I've always called my parents mom and dad. Well, when I was little I actually called them mommy and daddy.
EmoJoe 01-29-2006, 11:26 PM i always call my parents mom and dad.
i think its better to call them that
In some ways, it is because you should respect them. In some ways, it's fine because if they call you by your name, why can't you call them by theirs?
James 01-30-2006, 02:23 AM I would say it's disrespectful to call one's parents by their first names.
I saw Greg call his father Mike in one episode of The Brady Bunch, and there were no negative consequences.
MsOrange 01-30-2006, 09:22 AM Mine have always been Mom and Dad, but I know some people who call their parents by their first nams. To each his own I say.
Sharop 01-30-2006, 07:43 PM I call my parents "Mum" and "Dad." My mother and her siblings sometimes refer to their parents by their first names, but never to their face, and it's not often that they do so.
If the parents don't have a problem with their children addressing them by their first names, then I don't think it's disrespectful. In "To Kill a Mockingbird", the two kids, Jem and Scout, called their father by his first name (Atticus) which he apparently encouraged them to do. This thread made me think of that book.
Fonzarelli 01-30-2006, 09:54 PM Not if the parents are fine with it. I have this friend who always calls her mother and stepfather by their first names, and so does her little brother. I once asked the father why they do that, and he said it just went that way. He said he always gets angry with people who say it's disrespectful: "Why can the neighbour call me by my first name and my own kids can't?" The man's got a point there.

Ditto. Since my parents are my friends, I guess I feel like I can be insane and they won't care. lol I've had several friends over the years who I couldn't do that with.
Anyway, calling them by their first names would just seem weird to me, disrespectful or not. Mom and dad...or mama and daddy. Yes, I'm 26 and call my dad daddy.
Michael [hXc] 01-31-2006, 08:22 AM i don't ever call my parents by their first names. the idea of doing that just seems really strange to me
but i rarely refer to my aunts and uncles with the "aunt" or "uncle" in front of their name. i just use their names, but that's what everyone does in my family. :p

Well in the Netherlands, they have looser morals than they do in this country, so that does not
surprise me at all.

So you're saying the US has morals? That's a new one on me.

What do you know about Dutch morals?
And you're insane if you think you can judge Dutch morals because ONE friend of ONE Dutchman calls her parents by their first names.
*MIBabe03* 01-31-2006, 06:44 PM My parents would have shoved a foot up my ass if I had called them by their first names.
stella 01-31-2006, 06:48 PM In Asian culture, it is very rude not to address your parents-in-law as mom and dad.
Also if you are a kid, you need to address your parents' friends as Aunt and Uncle.
Sharop 01-31-2006, 07:51 PM So you're saying the US has morals? That's a new one on me.
Frasier Crane has morals. As does Niles.
I think most people basically have morals. And Frasier certainly has a good set of those; he's a genuinely kind person. A good role model, if you ask me. He doesn't call his Dad "Martin", though.
Hollow 01-31-2006, 08:08 PM 35-year-old stewie: we'll have to borrow the money from mommy and daddy.
present-day stewie: *attacks him and claws his eye lids* NEVER CALL THEM THAT AGAIN! IT'S LOIS AND THE FAT MAN, DO YOU HEAR ME?

No way....calling the "aunt" is something most people quit at a young age.
I call my dad by his name in crowds or when he aint paying attention....Thats about it.

My sentiments exactly. Where is the honor if you call them by their names?
TheHappyBurgerMeister 01-31-2006, 09:55 PM I've always called my parents "mom" and "dad". I think it's ok to call them by their first names occasionally like if you want there attention but not all the time.
For aunts and uncle I've always just called them by their first names. I've never put aunt or uncle in front of it and no one has ever minded that.
phoebe7165 02-01-2006, 07:24 AM i don't really think it matters.
i call my parents by their first names when i can't get their attention, or when we're in public and if i yell "mom" 15 different ladies turn around.
Yeah, I call my mom by her first name in public to get her attention, too.
You know what I think is more disrespectful than calling your parents by their first name is when somebody refers to their father as their 'old man' or mother as their 'old lady'(or when I hear husbands call their wives 'my old lady'). I just cringe when I hear somebody say that. I would never call my father 'my old man'. If anybody thinks that was a little bit off-topic, I apologize.
I think that's also kind of strange that some of you don't use 'Aunt' or 'Uncle'. I know I'm older than alot of you and I've always called my relatives Aunt Lucille, Aunt Agnes, etc. Not so much out of respect but it's just something I've been doing all my life, I guess I don't think to leave off the Aunt part. We even have a really close family friend who I've known all my life and I still call him 'Uncle Eddie'.
