All Together 25 hours not counting shows that are going to end, which means they need to eliminate 12 hours of prgramming and thats if they arn't gonna pick up anything new. So how do you think they will schedule it?
TeeVeeCloset 01-24-2006, 05:08 PM How do you figure they need to eliminate 12 hours of programs? It says the CW network will program 30 hours per week....thats at least 3 hours per night in prime plus some extra hours.....looks like we might see a new network programming past 10PM eastern...if that is the case.....that means BIG changes in the works everywhere bumping 10PM local affliate newscasts.
Also this is big news for many affliates which are branded with UPN or WB status....here in New York...the channels are rountinely called UPN 9 & WB 11....this means changing all graphics, changing program titles like WB morning news, WB afternoon block (which just started) .......it is going to get very interesting...not to mention what happens to the primetime local UPN affliates schedules..........
To all my old time friends.....
I say bring back the "million dollar movie"! to all my fellow new yorkers....morton downey reruns? or maybe the return of "Clint Holmes" If you understand any of that, you have been watching NY TV for a long time!
Pav we want your thoughts.....this is big breaking news indeed!
vashti1999 01-24-2006, 05:18 PM Pav we want your thoughts.....this is big breaking news indeed!
Pav could probably care less about this. ABC is his network.
Dean Winchester 01-24-2006, 05:18 PM Sunday
7-10 - probably new shows or other WB/UPN shows I didn't consider, I picked out the ones I think are most likely to survive the merge
Monday
8 - Everwood (might be last season)
9 - new show
Tuesday
8 - Gilmore Girls (season 7 is expected to be the last year)
9 - America's Next Top Model
Wednesday
8 - One Tree Hill
9 - Veronica Mars
Thursday
8 - Smallville
9 - Supernatural
Friday:
8 - Everybody Hates Chris
8:30 - One On One
9 - Reba (likely last season)
9:30 - Girlfriends
Tuesdays seem to fit like a glove since GG has always been a hit in that timeslot and Top Model has been a 9 pm hit.
Wednesdays is fitting since One Tree Hill and Veronica Mars are teen shows that have adult fans as well and both shows would work together
Thursday would work since Smallville and Supernatural are the only sci-fi shows WB has left and I think they fit well together
Friday would take the typical WB Friday sitcom night but mostly add UPN veterans to the list because Reba is the only WB sitcom that does any good
Sunday could be the night to try out new material.
Dean Winchester 01-24-2006, 05:21 PM Pav could probably care less about this. ABC is his network.

I explained the time thing in The CW Network Thread, it is also stated in thefutoncritic.com article...
TeeVeeCloset 01-24-2006, 05:23 PM I guess if they stick to the current WB program hours as listed in the other post, then yes that adds up to 30 hours per week......
but if they really want to be considered a network, then why stick to the same hours that technically didn't work......they really need to start programming the 10PM hour....that would be a big step in counter programming and a big move that FOX hasn't the courage to do, even though they produce 2 10PM newcasts in New York, WNYW & WWOR are a duopoly and it has been rumored for years that one newscast would go....oddly the 10PM WPIX newscast always seemed safe.
Yes they probably will stick to the current WB 30 hour schedule, but lets be serious, if you want to be a network, running 10 year old "ER" reruns in the afternoon doesn't count....that would be like ABC running reruns in the afternoon instead of first run soap operas!
vashti1999 01-24-2006, 05:26 PM lol
By the way, I didn't mean that in a bad way. I'm just saying Pav has things he's more interested in than what The WB/UPN is doing.

troopoleon8897 01-24-2006, 05:39 PM BTW, Im not sure if anyone else knows this but Smackdown is as good as gone at the end of the season, upn has played withh wwe's mind about canceling it and this is the last season on the contract and if we see it on any of the 5 networks it would be nbc (not likely but I said that because of the wwe/universal tv deal) so thats another two hours pretty much gone...

outside of Sunday and Friday (I think Friday should be reserved for comedies and Sunday for dramas), our outlook is almost identical. Actually, merging Top Model and Beauty And The Geek together would be a great idea, having one season of each, Top Model in the fall and Beauty And The Geek in the spring, like how Fox only airs American Idol in the spring as not to cause overkill.
troopoleon8897 01-24-2006, 05:45 PM well i agreed with alot of your points. I do think OTH and Veronica belong together and I always thought it was a mistake to pair up gilmore girls and supernatural...
Dean Winchester 01-24-2006, 05:48 PM I never understood why Supernatural followed Gilmore Girls, I almost wonder if it was in part because Jared Padalecki was a Gilmore Girls cast member for awhile and what better way than to introduce a new show starring a former Gilmore Girls actor than to have it follow Gilmore. At least it has paid off because Supernatural has already become a smash for the WB, I just think Smallville would be a much better companion piece to it because it and Gilmore Girls are completely different genres.
troopoleon8897 01-24-2006, 05:59 PM If they did expand to 11 then they could make a killer sci-fi thursday night,
8:00-Smallville
9:00-Aquaman (If it still happens)
10:00-Supernatural
PrettyinPink55 01-24-2006, 06:12 PM I hope that Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Reba, One Tree Hill, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, and Everybody Hates Chris will be on The CW. As long as they are....I'm set!
Pavan 01-24-2006, 06:30 PM Pav we want your thoughts.....this is big breaking news indeed!
I saw the press release on the wire at 11:30a or so. I have not been online since, so that is why I've been quiet. I even posted the blog very early today. The CW Network news and notes will be a big part of tomorrow's blog.
I think this effects new shows for the fall more than current shows. Any show that does not return next season, I think was not going to return anyway. The current shows that the network executives like will find a way to return, the network are not going to throw a show they like because of the merger.
It makes it tougher for pilots to get on the air.
And they might still be a 6th network, someone or some big time company can start their own network with the current UPN affeliates, and picking some WB / UPN leftovers.

well, a lot of the WB's hits are veterans now. Gilmore Girls is expected to end with season 7 next year, Reba likely could end in the next season or two, Smallville is still doing well but it's gonna be going into the sixth year and they probably will get tired of it by season 7 or 8. Everwood might be gone by season end. One Tree Hill has dropped a little in the ratings (mostly because of bad press surrounding Chad and Sophia's divorce) but it's starting to pick back up and could likely go on until a sixth or seventh season. Supernatural is the "new" golden boy of the station and that's the one with the brightest future and most likely to still be on at the turn of the decade.
Since a lot of the WB's hits are now veterans (and with 7th and Charmed expected to bid farewell in May), that opens up a lot of space in the next few seasons for new shows.

WWe Smackdown (neither the WB nor the UPN have ever programmed this night successfully, and this draws 5 million viewers. Why would it dump it?)
I bet that if any of the WB's mid season series hit if big (which is a BIG if), the Warner is going to regret hard its decision to merge...
What the network might do as well is become virtually repeat free and pick up marginal hit series like One Tree Hill and some of the UPN comedies.
Ronn Harmon 01-24-2006, 10:20 PM I doubt they will go 3 hours a night, I don't think they have enough programming at this stage to fill all these hours, plus why would the CW network go 3 hours when FOX is getting ready to celebrate 20 years and they have not changed there format yet.
TVJunkie101 01-24-2006, 10:28 PM I like the idea of repeat free.
Maybe air a 22 week run of a show from September - December, and then another January - May. They can't do that with every show and it could end up being overkill, but it could be a gamble that pays off.
I don't really watch a lot of the WB (Reba was my #1 WB show and I've watched Smallville, Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven on and off over the years until I lost my WB affiliate). and I literally watch nothing on UPN (I'll probably give Veronica Mars a chance. I chose to ignore it because I figured a good show like that would end up canceled). I do like the idea of them merging although branding a brand new network could prove tough... But it's really interesting.
CW better have some urban shows, or there will be pressure on Bob Johnson founder of BET to start his own network, using UPN's current affeliates.

I wouldn't be overly surprised if BET scoops some of the UPN's sitcoms, seeing as how Chris and Girlfriends are the only two worth keeping, and maybe All Of Us.
I'm also thinking that CBS may have it's eye on "Chris." Remember how Dawn Os (forget the rest) said that the UPN wasn't a farm system for CBS. Well, suddenly it's not the UPN anymore...

Don't forget we are talking about Egos here. There will be fighting between WB and UPN executives of how many UPN and WB shows make it. I think it would be better if they launched the new network in fall 2007, and give everyone more time to sort things out.
I think they will be pressure on CW to have enough urban shows. I think the CW fall lineup will be similar to the NFL head coaching hiring.
I hope BET does pickup some of these sitcoms, I don't want any of these shows to be canceled prematurely. Let them run their porper course.

as long as Supernatural and One Tree Hill return (I'm positive Charmed won't be back, and either way, its run it's course, eight seasons is more than enough), the CW can be 99% urban shows, I just really hope OTH survives the merge and if not, a lot of people will be pissed

40% urban shows sounds fair to me.
I just don't want things to go back to the way it was in the 80's after the urban boom of the 70's, outside of the Cosby show there was no good quality black roles on tv. Much less shows that featured african americans.

I disagree, the 70's and 80's shows were much more universal. There were just as many whites who watched Cosby Show, Jeffersons, 227, Fresh Prince and Good Times as African-Americans, the shows out now on the UPN aren't really universal.
I think race, both white and black, has gotten hurt on television, I miss the days of racially intergrated shows. Diff'rent Strokes was a perfect example of a show with equal white and black footing and it was universally loved. A character such as Tootie was priceless and helped Facts Of Life (who wants to bet if they made the show now, it'd be all white girls?).
If shows like Girlfriends and the sort even approached the same sort of talent that was put into Cosby or A Different World, they would be more universally popular. But instead it's trying to be a niche series. However, the episodes I've seen of Steve Harvey in reruns were actually quite good and I think the show would've been a hit on CBS or ABC or something. UPN's sitcoms need better writers, instead of just being "we're an urban sitcom so we'll be watched just because". I mean, UPN is the company that siked Homeboys In Outer Space and Desmond Pffeifer on us, two of the worst sitcoms of the past ten years.
Frankly, more people want the WB shows to stay because their shows are better written and more involving. UPN actually is having their biggest non-WB-exile cult hit by following the WB formula with Veronica Mars
Dr. John Becker 01-25-2006, 01:02 PM Hung Up, I have a question for you. I know you used to live in Louisville (you might still). Did you get WBKI or WFTE better? I never could get WBKI at all until Directv picked them up, where I've always gotten a clear picture on WFTE, over the air or on DirecTV.
Dean Winchester 01-25-2006, 01:28 PM that's odd, it's always been the opposite for me. WFTE has always been kinda blurry and snowy looking while WBKI was also crystal clear
Dr. John Becker 01-25-2006, 02:05 PM That is strange. I guess it depends on the area of Louisville a person is in. I never could watch several WB shows I liked because the picture was so bad for me. And UPN never had any shows I liked.

When I talk about the days of the 80's, shows that come to mind are Gimme A Break, Diff'rent Strokes, and Webster, all of the african american characters needed help from white characters to survive.
I agree for every great urban sitcoms, there are a bunch of crap urban sitcoms, but I don't want those high quality shows to be extinct.

well, on Gimme A Break, Nell didn't need the Chief to survive, she is the one who gladly took the role of caretaker after her friend (their mother) died. By the last season, the Kanisky's were gone and it was Nell who was the one that the (white) Lawrence brothers needed to survive. It's not really a fair analogy because Nell was the heart of the household and she took care of them out of her own goodness and not because she was a "poor black woman" who needed a job.
Diff'rent Strokes actually did a fantastic job of merging worlds. Arnold and Willis were kids, they needed Mr. Drummond to look out for him. Plus, Mr. D was such a positive role model on the kids and he strived for them to be nothing less than overachievers, similar to Cliff and Clair Huxtable. I definately do not see anything negative there, because Phillip even tells the kids in the pilot episode that he's not giving them a free ride, that they are going to have to be good students also.
Funny how CBS has a lot to do with the merger, and they might want to steal Everybody Hates Chris because of history.
One of UPN's first hit shows Moesha was originally devlopped for CBS, the passed and UPN picked it up. Before Moesha, WB was dominating UPN, and UPN might have folded quickly.
In its own way CBS saved UPN by passing on a show that would put UPN on the map with the WB. Personally I feel that was a god blessing, Moesha would not have lasted a season on CBS, because of the audience CBS had at the time.
Could you image Moesha as part of the mid 90's CBS lineup. Just doesn't fit.
Dean Winchester 01-25-2006, 05:57 PM Chris actually could work on CBS, could be the hit they need on Monday's since Raymond is gone and Two And A Half Men does well, but is not an "anchor show"

I wish they weren't merging. We finally got a UPN station here and I don't even watch their stuff. I prefer the WB (for Reba) and ABC (for Hope and Faith).
You also have to include time for the showings of the Scooby Halloween or Christmas Specials.......and the Grandma Got Run over by Reindeer cartoon they air in December. And that usually is aired on Friday Night.

But at the same time, WWE averaged 4.5 million viewers on the night, better than either network has ever done on Fridays. I don't see it moving or getting cancelled, at least not during the first season.
Wings#1ShowPeriod 01-26-2006, 03:29 PM well Smackdown! has indeed been renewed for 2 more seasons, According to Variety and various wrestling websites. So Fridays can be scratch off the new CW schedule. I just hope One Tree Hill makes it, even though it has a slim to none chance. Well if this is the final season of One Tree Hill, they better let them know so they don't leave us hanging on forever to some stupid cliffhanger...And if the OTH writers are smart, they'd begin to wrap everything up now, and if they're renewed, just work from there next year.

Charmed is over. It had a slight chance of making it on the WB for next season, but on the CW, it's effectively over. As for OTH, I'd be surprised to see it on the fall schedule, but as a mid season replacement? Maybe.
Dean Winchester 01-28-2006, 09:15 PM I think OTH has a small chance of making it. I think WB realizes that the divorce hurt ratings badly this season, and it's in a timeslot where Smallville flopped in too (and now Smallville is having its best ratings ever). Ratings aren't the best but OTH makes WB a lot of money thanks to DVD sales (which Everwood and 7th Heaven flopped in) as well as soundtrack residuals. I think if they kept letting What I Like About You limp along for four low-rated seasons, when their best ratings were worse than OTH's nadir this season, I think a fourth season is in order, and if it stays down, then it's time to let go, but OTH is frankly too successful a franchise for WB to let go after just three seasons.
EmoJoe 01-28-2006, 10:18 PM how are they gonna do daytime programming? since different areas have different daytime programming for those networks, how are they gonna do it?

factsoflife 03-06-2006, 09:00 PM With my schedule that would make these shows dead/canceled:
South Beach (like it was going to make the cut anyway?)

Related (rumored to be close to cancelation anyways)

Are you sure they're not scheduleing the 10 o'clock hour Leon?
Scoobiedoo30 03-07-2006, 06:30 PM I think my CW Station will keep Reruns of Evverybody Loves Raymond from 9:00 pm until 10:00 pm Central Time
troopoleon8897 03-08-2006, 08:12 AM Are you sure they're not scheduleing the 10 o'clock hour Leon?
yes, absolutely sure...
TVJunkie101 03-08-2006, 02:26 PM The CW won't air regular programming in the 10PM hour. If Fox hasn't don it in all it's years, then I don't see CW doing it either.
MONDAYS
8PM - Everybody Hates Chris
8:30 - New Sitcom
9PM - Girlfriends
9:30 - Half and Half (a high rated sitcom for UPN standards)
TUESDAYS
8PM - Gilmore Girls
9PM - Veronica Mars
WEDNESDAYS
8PM - America's Next Top Model / Beauty & the Geek
9PM - New Drama
THURSDAYS
8PM - Smallville
9PM - Supernatural
FRIDAYS
8PM - Smackdown!
SUNDAYS
7PM - Who knows? New Drama? Dramady? Sitcoms? Reruns?
8PM - Reba
8:30 - New Sitcom
9PM - Aquaman
Honestly though, I think a smarter move would have Smackdown! move to Sunday's, and air 7pm-9pm as lead in for Aquaman. I could also see Aquaman paired with Smallville and have Reba anchor a new Friday night lineup with sitcoms. We'll see.
I don't see a lot of hope for One Tree Hill, or Everwood, but IMO, the CW should keep both on the backburner, just in case and at least give them both one more season, or even half a season (13 episodes) to end it properly.
