View Full Version : Have you ever put up a thread that you thought would be....
Brad Russ 01-18-2006, 09:35 PM Really popular, but then only got a few replies on it?? This has happened to me many times. I'll get all happy thinking Iv'e come up with an ingenius thread, and so I'll get away from my computer for a few hours, come back thinking there'll be like 50 responses or something, only to find out that there's only a few, if any?? :( I think it's worse when you've put alot of thought and time into something, and know it's something that could have been really enjoyable. Those are the most disappointing ones. Anyway, in this thread I'm giving you a chance to post up the titles of some of those threads that you thought would be great, but turned out to be not so great.
Ireneparalegal 01-18-2006, 09:36 PM you know, i feel the same way too. you put it so eloquently. i can't even remember the ones that didn't fare too good. that's bad!!!
Brad Russ 01-18-2006, 09:53 PM you know, i feel the same way too. you put it so eloquently. i can't even remember the ones that didn't fare too good. that's bad!!!
Yeah, and it's really nobody's fault when this happens, I mean, if people aren't interested, they aren't interested. It just kind of sucks for the person putting up the thread.
PZelda 01-18-2006, 09:53 PM Oh yeah, I know the feeling. I started a bloopers thread at the Mama's Family board that I stickied...but there aren't very many responses to it! I may have to merge some of the separate bloopers to make it a bigger thread.
I don't start threads here on CC too often, but it seems that every time I start one, it goes to 4+ pages or more. My last CC thread that I started got 45 responses to it. *shrug* But I have had some threads here that didn't get many responses either.
Janice 01-18-2006, 09:54 PM It's happened to me plenty of times. It bothers me but not too much. On Chit Chat, try to keep in mind that people don't like anything too complicated. They don't want to have to work at something. I include myself in that category.
On Chit Chat, I've found that the secret to a successful thread is to keep in mind that most people like to talk about themselves. It's human nature and the reason why the "What's your favorite fill in the blank?" type threads are so popular.
I've bombed many times here at Sitcoms Online.
Oh well, I'll keep trying, read my stuff or don't. As long as somebody gets it, I'm happy.
;)

Yeah, that's a very good point. I'll even admit it, I'm the exact same way. I feel bad sometimes because people will write out real complicated stuff about their lives, and on certain days, especially when my A.D.D. is really bad, I won't even read it, because I'm just looking to find things that are short and sweet, and am just looking to have a good time. Other days I love those threads, because I'm in a mood to give advice, or possibly help someone out.
The last thread I started that I really hoped would be popular, was the one where I wanted people to post up links to funny videos and stuff. I was hoping it would become like the best looking men and women threads, or the complaint department, or even the last movie you watched thread, but that probably won't happen. I will milk that thread for all I can, because I think it has potential, but like you said Janice, it's probably just a bit too complicated, as some time and work actually goes into it.
Chad Michael Murray 01-18-2006, 11:09 PM Aww!! I'm going to make sure that I start replying in ALL of the threads created by the people who have posted here so far!!
Just to make things better, though, I give you...

swedeace 01-18-2006, 11:17 PM Yes, it has happened to me. There are times when I believe the most popular people around here tend to get more replies in a given thread, actually. Like, if I try and be funny and respond to some kind of "funny news" or something, I usually don't get a response or a reply. But... it seems if someone else who's more popular says something funny, others laugh or agree with them, etc. I dunno.... I try not to take offense into it. It's hard, but it does bother me sometimes. Oh well... I guess that's life....
I do agree with Janice, though. It seems the threads with "Most/Least Favorite" or "Do you have this or that in your city" are more popular. You're right, Janice. Most people like simple threads.

EmoJoe 01-18-2006, 11:22 PM yeah
Chad Michael Murray 01-18-2006, 11:25 PM I sent this to the first five people via PM who posted in this thread (with the exception of Irene, I missed your name...sorry! But this goes for you too) and now I figured I'd be better off posting it here instead of just sending it again in groups of five:
I just wanted to say that ALL of you are vital members here on SO, and quite frankly I'd find it pretty strange around here if any of you were no longer around.
So don't worry...even if you guys don't always get a bunch of replies, you're all still very needed around here no matter what.

Aww, you're so sweet for doing that :D I think the same of you--in fact, I was wondering where you went during that short time you were away  I think everyone here is an important part of SO and I'd be sad if anyone was to stop coming here.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-18-2006, 11:31 PM Haha yeah, that's happened to me a few times.
Jonathan 01-18-2006, 11:42 PM Yes. I learned not to take it personally.

Well, I don't know about all of you, but that Stacy Keibler picture sure made my day!!! :D Thanks Chad!!
Brian Damage 01-19-2006, 12:09 AM It's happened to me a couple of times. It really doesn't bother me all that much. I'd rather have a few well thought out responses to a thread, than it turning into a totally random thread with a million responses totally off the topic I originally started.
snl 70s show fan 01-19-2006, 12:44 AM once or twice and it dosent bother me too much but i was told at another site one time that my posts were stupid and that i wrote like a 5 year old but the way i look at it if someone is really interested in the topic that they will respond

that's sad...you don't get that from us here...i like your posts/threads.
Chad Michael Murray 01-19-2006, 12:47 AM I agree with Irene!!
And on a sidenote: everybody go see the Fall Out Boy video I posted on Page 2 of that thread about the videos.
I guarantee you'll all be worshipping me in thanks afterwards.
NOW GIT YO' BEE-HINDS OVER THERE, SUCKAS!! :mrt:

...as for people being "popular" around here, how can you really tell? meh, i dunno - maybe I just cant tell.

Uh...I dunno. I think you have to have some special perception for it. Or maybe it's just a girl thing. I can tell, but I can't really give any definite examples justifying why I say it.
MsOrange 01-19-2006, 07:46 AM what does DOA mean??

Stormtracker TF 01-19-2006, 12:12 PM I don't start many threads, but I usually only create one if I think it will get replies. They usually get about 15-20 or so.
Unless it's some random thread. Then more like 2,000. That doesnt really count.

I'm not trying to be whiny, I really noticed a few times that whenever I reply to a thread that is the end of it.
I was about to say the same about me. My replies are often the kiss of death to a thread.
I rarely start a thread cuz it'll probably be stillborn.
Also, should a thread continue on after my reply, there is often two or thread replies that say exactly the same thing that my reply had already said. Now this bugs me if someone asks a question, I answer it, my answer is completely overlooked, some time later (in other words, these replies did NOT happen simultaneously) someone else answers the question pretty much word-for-word as my reply, and that second person gets the "thank you." It makes me wonder: does everyone have me on ignore... or something? This happens on many forums, not just SO. Makes me feel invisible.

Janice Johnson 01-21-2006, 08:28 PM Are you sure that it's not a thread that about EVERYONE is posting about? That's happened to me. I've started threads that a lot of other people already started, and many other people will post under thise threads instead of mine. Like one time, I started a thread making fun of Janet Jackson's Superbowl breast fiasco, but like almost EVERYBODY was starting threads about the same exact thing. This was February, March, or April of 2004, when her mishap was hot and most talked about. Then I was shocked when NO ONE replied to my thread.  Then another time, just recently, I started a thread about Crystal from American Idol, season 5(Suntan Girl) but like 30 other threads were started about her, and no one has replied to my thread yet.

I usually try to post stuff that I haven't seen before, or stuff that hasn't been posted for awhile. I have accidentaly posted things that another person had just recently posted though. Usually when I do, and notice, I'll just apologize before anyone can say: "This was just posted the other day ", and I'll tell everyone to disregard the thread.
Another reason I know of why certain threads don't get many replies, is because of the threads title. You need to do a title that'll grab people's attention, and make them want to read your words. I did a post on the politics board about a week ago that had been up for a day, and it only had 9 views, and 1 reply. I then decided to liven it up, and make the title more interesting, and within hours, it suddenly had over 40 views, and 7 or 8 replies. So that has alot to do with it as well. Bottom line, IF YOU MAKE GOOD TITLES, PEOPLE WILL READ WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY!!!!! They may not reply once they see what the thread contains, but temptation through a good title almost always works.
I was about to say the same about me. My replies are often the kiss of death to a thread.
I so understand what you, and TheGreatPretender mean about feeling like a thread killer. Hopefully this doesn't offend, but in a way, it's kind of comforting to know that others have felt this way. Up until real recently as a matter of fact, I thought that I was like some kind of curse to S.O. Like the more I posted, the worse the boards would be. 4 years Iv'e been here, and for three of those years, I struggled big time with these insecurities. I even took close to a year off, due for the most part to those feelings. Making new friends, and realizing that I can actually contribute, has really helped me through those feelings, but I don't think they ever totally go away, as they're always looming in the back of my mind. So, just so you guys' know, you're not alone on this.

I agree with what you are saying about the vague titles. I don't see it happening here a lot, but I have seen it in advice forums I sometimes lurk in. Most people usually write a title like "I need advice!" And it's not usually one or two, but it's usually like 6-7. Well, duh.... If it's an advice forum, then I would HOPE they want to get or give advice. I then later confuse which thread was about which problem/advice-seeking, so I accidentally skip it. But yeah, I agree.... A clear title DOES help. In all forums, I just skip over some of the titles that are vague, especially when I don't have time to post. I tell myself I will later open it, but then it gets buried down that I often forget about them. Sometimes I have about one or two minutes to quickly check the main SO Chit Chat page for updates or new threads, and I lurk but don't reply quite yet. You know how the newly replied threads are bolded in this forum? I pay more attention to those. So, I hope people please make a clear title so it's easier. If there are many unclear titles, it makes it difficult to tell (or remember next time) what that thread is about.

On another website, it's in the "Rules" section of the website board not to put vague titles. They even have an example. They say, "Do not put this: "Did you know....." as a thread title because it is too vague of a description of the topic."
Janice Johnson 02-17-2006, 11:35 PM Hey Little Mel , there is a website that allows you to edit AND delete your own messages, so I bump up a lot of my topics when not too many people reply to that topic, and then I delete the message so that it only reads, 'Deleted by Poster".;) You should ONLY try doing this to your OWN thread and not to other posters threads, because many posters are notified by email when a poster responds to their thread, AND they get the name of the poster...... If YOU are bumping up your own thread, there is no embarrasment(but you must delete the message IMMEADIATELY after you bump it up).....;) :p
