What's your favorite episode of Barney Miller? I know my favorite season is 3, but haven't narrowed down an episode. I really like "Quarantine" pts. 1 & 2. A lot of funny moments in that one. Especially Lugar reacting to the two gay guys in the station and Harris "talking" in his sleep about his coworkers while they all listen in.

I don't know the title of the episode, but there was a show in which a guy that Harris and Wojo picked up thought he was a werewolf. For me, that was a standout episode, esp. Barney's reaction to the "werewolf"'s howling! I used to have that one on an audio tape.

YEMANA: "Where's the file on hallucinations? .. Oh, here it is."
WOJO: "I didn't know we had one. Is that whole file on hallucinations?"
FISH: "Just be thankful that they don't have enough brains to organize!"

*********************

BARNEY (hearing prisoner's howling): "What's going on here? This is a
police station--not a horror movie!"
YEMANA: "I could've sworn he was starting to change--I saw hair
growing out of his face!"
BARNEY: "That's a beard! Haven't you ever seen a beard before?"
YEMANA: "Not in my family."

That was a very funny episode. I also like when they found out Wojo was bringing in "a werewolf".

HARRIS: It's Kapeckni. He thinks he's a werewolf.

BARNEY: A werewolf up here?

YEMANA: I better put some papers down in the cage.

My favourite episode is the one where Wojo's girlfriend made some brownies and Wojo brought them to the stationhouse for the boys and it turns out his girlfriend put hash(I think it was hash)in them! Fish had the funniest line:"First time in years I felt this good and it has to be illegal!"

The judge ( me ) has come up with "Miss best Barney Miller ep for 2006 " first, its the second runner up, the ep where Dietrich had to face the lie detector and straight-faced claimed to be an alien without making the machine register even a slight diff in his demenor...
the first runner up is the ep with the werewolf ...who can forget Yamana's famous line " Down Mr Kopeknie, down!!!!"???
And the winner, is the drugged brownie ep, again with Jack Soo delivering the funniest line in the series, answering the phone , totally stoned with the slurred Japanese phone greeting " Moshi, moshi....."
To accept this award....ME...ty, byyyyyyeeeeeeeeee * Exit stage right !!!*

All of those are great episodes and among my favorites. Does anyone know if any more of the seasons will be released on DVD?

Hash is very funny -- I also like the Christmas Story, where Nick Yemana's girlfriend is a hooker and the other detectives don't know how to tell him.

I liked the one where Wojo and the detective played by Linda Lavin have to play a married couple on a stakeout in a hotel.

There was an episode where this guy comes to the precinct saying that his daughter was captured by some cult, and it turned out she was working in an Indian Restaurant in lower Manhattan.

They bring the restaurant owner into the station and he's got long hair and robes. They're questioning him.

"Just what do you do down there anyway"?

He goes,

"About $70,000 after taxes".

I also like an episode where Inspector Lugger is bored (well, isn't he always!), but Barney suggests some hobbies. He tells the inspector to take up fishing. Lugger says, "Eh, Barn, I'd have to go out to the "Island" (Long Island). I'd be sittin' on the end of a smelly dock, with a string danglin' in the water for hours waitin' for a fish to bite. What for? Ah, fishin', who needs it, eh Barn?"

The way he said it gets me lol.

I also like the shows where things were beyond Captain Miller's control -- like the weather in "Rain" or "Blizzard".

I loved Gregory Sierra/Chano's signature ep, "The Hero" (Season 1, Episode 13). Chano shoots and kills 2 bank robbers holding hostages. While he knows he was doing his duty, he still feels extreme guilt. The whole episode was very well-made, and Gregory Sierra should have gotten an award for it. The scene where he breaks down alone in his apartment after putting on a brave face in front of his colleagues is just stunning.

For more light-hearted episodes, I love "The Arsonist", with Steve Franken in the title role. I also enjoy "You Dirty Rat", "Ambush", "Snow Job", "Graft", "The Escape Artist", "Horse Thief", "Happy New Year" and "Fish". The latter ep marks the debut of Dietrich (Steve Landesburg) and his Gregory Peck impression: "Go away, Beverly is busy!"

I remember one episode where (I think) Lugar was talking to Yemanna about World War II and Yemanna said he was in the Army and served in a Division that fought in Germany (apparently Japanese Americans fought in the European theater)....After hearing this a shocked Lugar said " You mean you were on our side?"

Does any one remember this, or at least the exact dialouge? It was hallarious.

I usuall didn't like two-parters because I'd have to wait a whole week to see the second half -- however I did enjoy the episodes "Goodbye, Mr. Fish" -- sad and funny at the same time.

I remember Barney Miller mainly as a funny show but I just watched the first season DVD and "Hero" is indeed terribly sad. Very well written and of course acted by Gregory Sierra and the rest of the cast.

I am trying to remember the others, it's been a long time...I enjoyed it when Dietrich came in and he and Harris were forced to room together for awhile. Steve Landesburg was very funny. The early shows with Jack Soo and Abe Vigoda are great as well though.

"Rain" (Season 2) was another funny episode. The precinct roof is on the verge of collapse during a long and heavy rainstorm. The building inspector tells Barney about buildings and roofs: "It breathes, it expands, it moves, it sways back and forth in the wind."

With a perfectly deadpan face, Fish replies: "That's what killed the Edsel."

Any episode with Inspector Luger.

I loved the "Riot" episode. This is the one where Luger tells the Hassidic people to "Take a Shave".

This in turn caused a riot, hence the name of the episode.

Barney Miller Rules!:happyface

Oh yeah, I think right after Luger said that he came back into the squad room with his jacket ripped to shreds. It was a funny moment.
