View Full Version : Shows that had a lot of guest stars?
Janice 01-08-2006, 12:13 AM I've been watching The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air lately, and that show had many guest stars.
Will & Grace has had plenty.
The Practice had their fair share.
Ally McBeal had some good guest stars. Barry White's musical guest appearance was great.

Dean Winchester 01-08-2006, 12:48 AM at this point, the show should be "Will & Grace & (fill in the blank, whoever the major guest star this week is)" because it's been done so much.
I agree with Ally McBeal, but I think the constant guest stars ended up killing the show because episodes were more about Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew Perry than the actual characters you watched the show for in the shows last two seasons IMO.
An 80s Guy 01-08-2006, 01:23 AM Friends(this isn't all of them)

Cole Sprouse
that's all i can think of right now

Friends has the geust stars listed on the back of the each season on DVD, and each season has at least 6 if I recall correctly. So I agree with that.
Will & Grace has had soo many it is getting ridicoulous.
Dean Winchester 01-08-2006, 03:08 AM Friends never went as over the top with guests as Will And Grace has though. I notice that Friends really cut down on guest stars in the final season because they wanted more time spent with the characters you knew and loved and less with "look, it's Susan Sarandon!!!". I know Christina Applegate returned in the last season but she was Rachel's sister on it, as well as some of the other stars who appeared in the last year
treky 01-08-2006, 03:58 AM "The Beverly Hillbillies" had a lot.
Classicshowsgurl15 01-08-2006, 04:10 AM The Partridge Family had alot of Guest stars.
tv star collector 01-08-2006, 08:53 AM I think THE SIMPSONS has had more guest stars than anybody (with the possible exception of GUNSMOKE).
Superstar 01-08-2006, 09:14 AM Sabrina, the Teenage Witch had a good share of guest stars, especially in its last season to boost ratings.
Johnny S 01-08-2006, 01:42 PM Sabrina, the Teenage Witch had a good share of guest stars, especially in its last season to boost ratings.
I was watching it in syndication and three episodes in a row had musical geust stars. lol It was Avril Lavigne, Goo Goo Dolls and someone else I don't remember.
Céline 01-08-2006, 03:28 PM Gilligan's island
Zebra 3 01-08-2006, 03:39 PM Gilligan's island
My fav. was that groovy 60s rock band The Mosquitoes. - Fantasy Island and The Love Boat had a parade of guest stars.
TV DVD Fan 01-08-2006, 04:33 PM Yeah, I really don't think any television show's number of guest stars even came close to matching the number of guest stars that appeared in Love Boat, and they were pretty much all notable. Seinfeld also had its fair share of supporting characters like Babu, Puddy, Newman, Mr. Lippman, Mr. Peterman, some of Jerry's nightclub friends, the low-talker, Susan, and so many more... Then there were the voices by Larry David and small roles played by the crew and the usual un-notable guest stars.
Pat
gilligan fanatic 01-08-2006, 04:39 PM Gunsmoke, with over 600 episodes there was tons of guest stars
gilligan fanatic 01-08-2006, 04:41 PM Gilligan's island
Gilligan didn't really have that many guest stars. And if was usually just one per episode. About half of the episodes didn't even have one.
Dean Winchester 01-08-2006, 05:19 PM well, with Seinfeld, the guest characters 95% of the time were because they were funny additions to the show, it was "look, it's Newman", not "look, it's Wayne Knight who was in Jurassic Park". The notable exceptions for Seinfeld I can think of offhand were Bette Midler and Keith Hernandez, the rest of the guests were more just because the characters were funny and not in the same sense that "on Thursday's Seinfeld... special guest star Bette Midler meets Kramer" was.
To me, Seinfeld was more a show about four characters and the offbeat characters that surround them. Will And Grace instead went out of the way to make sure that each week there was somebody huge to promote in the commercials, and it got to the point where the show couldn't do a week without some star to push.
Classicshowsgurl15 01-08-2006, 05:44 PM I forgot The Love Boat. They had a new set a guest stars every week.
slackermonkey 01-09-2006, 12:24 AM "The Love Boat" and "Will & Grace" are the most obvious offenders.
"Friends" had a lot of guest stars, but that was more a case of writing a character first, then lucking into the star being willing to do the part. Whereas with "Will & Grace," they land the star first, then write a character around that person, and it's usually some celebrity du jour like Jennifer Lopez or Janet Jackson, who more often than not has no or limited acting experience.

Superbatboy 01-10-2006, 04:48 AM I Love Lucy had a hoarde of guest stars. Not only that, but a hoarde of guest stars who were the same actors/actresses and played different roles.
mstewart 01-10-2006, 05:58 AM Hello how about The Lucy Show/Here's Lucy. Nearly every week a celebrity was on the show playing themselves.
friendsfan77 01-10-2006, 07:46 AM or Janet Jackson, who more often than not has no or limited acting experience.
Right. The only other show that Janet did that I can think of was Good Times. Though her position on Good Times was a regular role later in the run.
lockdown06 01-10-2006, 05:21 PM The dukes of hazzard had a handful. And Jesse always had connections with them.
Smallville has had a few. (I know they ain't exactly sitcoms)
Dean Winchester 01-10-2006, 05:32 PM Right. The only other show that Janet did that I can think of was Good Times. Though her position on Good Times was a regular role later in the run.
false, Janet was recurring as Willis' girlfriend on Diff'rent Strokes from 1980 to 1984, and she also was on Fame in the 1984-1985 season.

Doesn't every show have lots of guest stars?
Torgo 05-16-2018, 03:18 PM Doesn't every show have lots of guest stars?
I assume they meant well known guest stars, shows like The Walking Dead don't really have many known guest stars, especially on a weekly basis.
PhoenixAcres 05-16-2018, 03:30 PM I Love Lucy had a lot. In the hour format they had new guests every episode and it started to get annoying.
The Twilight Zone had hundreds of current and future TV stars appear across its 5 seasons.

That's one of the best things about collecting old TV shows. Every now and then you'll run into a "guest star" who at that time was an obscure actor/actress who "guest starred" starred on an episode (sometimes on a show that's equally obscure) who, a few years later few years later becomes a household name. :)
factsoflife 05-16-2018, 08:54 PM Frasier had a lot of guest stars; as did Cheers.
All In The Family often had guest stars. 227 had many guest stars.
The Golden Girls; Night Court; Murphy Brown--- all had many guest stars.
I assume they meant well known guest stars, shows like The Walking Dead don't really have many known guest stars, especially on a weekly basis.
I still think the answer is "99% of all shows ever made", but fine, I'll play along...
The Simpsons has lots of guest stars.
Odd Couple
Evening Shade
The former made sense, seeing as how Felix and Oscar were a photographer and sportswriter, respectively, in NYC. I have a hard time believing so many celebrities stopped through Evening Shade, Arkansas so often.
AMackII 05-16-2018, 10:25 PM Matlock also have various guest stars during its 9 year tenure
Bonniegirl 05-16-2018, 11:40 PM Flintstones had Ann Margrock

Edward216 05-17-2018, 03:22 AM The Love Boat. It ran for 9 seasons so there's far too many guest stars to list. Although there were several actors who guest starred more than once but as different characters.

Bewitched
Here's a few that I remember off hand:
Adam West
Bert Convy
Bernie Kopell
Imogene Coca
Henry Gibson
Arte Johnson
Jack Cassidy
Maureen McCormick
Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart (singers)
TV Guy 05-18-2018, 08:55 PM The Love Boat and Fantasy Island were built around guest stars. They were basically anthology shows, so I don’t think they count.
The later Lucy Shows were BRUTAL when it came to guest stars. “BOB CUMMINGS, what are you doing here???!!!”
Crusinforabrusin 06-22-2018, 09:21 AM Rowan And Martins Laugh-In. It was a whos who of celebrities from that era

I'm sorry I completely disagree. The Love Boat and Fantasy Island both had a regular cast so they absolutely should be included. Why shouldn't they be? You're wrong.
Ed.
1960'sTVfan 06-23-2018, 09:34 PM The Joey Bishop Show sitcom had a lot of guest stars in it's 3rd season, I think NBC might have done this to try and boost ratings for the show but it didn't work, NBC cancelled the show after seasons end only to have CBS pick it up for a 4th season, then afterwards it was cancelled again. Poor Joey, he had a pretty good sitcom but it never really got the respect it deserved, a 4 season run with over 120 episodes still isn't bad though.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Home Improvement
Crusinforabrusin 06-23-2018, 09:40 PM Relatively Obscure today but I'd say "The Colgate Comedy Hour"
