View Full Version : is this so wrong?
Michael [hXc] 01-07-2006, 11:34 AM i was on another message board, and i know this woman on it who i am assuming is in her thirties. and i talked to her for a while and then when she found out i am 14, she was all like "i can't have a friendship with a child who is underage, it's against the law and socially wrong". is it so wrong for an adult online to talk to a child? it's not like we planned to meet in real life or anything, what is the big deal?
swedeace 01-07-2006, 12:03 PM It's understandable in both sides.
If she tells people she is befriending a 14-year-old, she may be worried by the fact that society will down on her as a whole and mock her. People may start to tell her, "Geez, you can only make friends with young teens? What's wrong with you that you can't even make friends your own age?" That would be my guess, but I cannot speak for her.
Unfortunately, society does put these kinds of rules and strains on the people within society.
In my opinion, friendships are quite unique and can surprise people.
rjb182 01-07-2006, 12:03 PM Depends on the kind of friendship. Maybe she had in mind something more than "just friends" until she found out your age.
G-Force Glockstar 01-07-2006, 12:06 PM I think it's fine as long as you don't plan to meet or anything
Brian Damage 01-07-2006, 12:10 PM I can't blame her all that much. People could take it the wrong way if they found out a 30 year old was chatting with a 14 year old. Especially now a days with teachers sleeping with students and all.

Agreed

i was thinking it was that. because then she was implying she needs a man to talk to, and not a child. but she didn't think i act my age. i guess if she can't accept being friends with me for who i am, she is a ****ty friend anyway. but i doubt she'd go around saying she is friends with a 14 year old. if i told my friends i talk to a 30 year old, they'd say "wtf ur crazy" or "u got problems".
Hollow 01-07-2006, 04:19 PM if i told my friends i talk to a 30 year old, they'd say "wtf ur crazy" or "u got problems".
i've thought about that too. but frankly there's nothing wrong with friendships between adults and adolescents on the internet. this board mostly full of teenagers with a few people in their middle ages who chat with us just as regularly, i haven't seen anyone complain about it. many adults here have condoled and helped me with crises i've been through.
Dutabi84 01-07-2006, 04:28 PM I guess I don't really see the problem with having friendly conversations with such an age gap. She must have been weirded out by finding out how young you are, and also concerned about the recent breakout of crackdowns on adults hooking up with children on the internet. Not that it's anything that she intended, but you can never be too careful.
Mijada 01-07-2006, 04:34 PM I agree with what Brian Damage said. Don't take it personally Mike. She's only trying to protect herself and you as well.

i agree too. but truthfully she doesn't even believe i am 14 but the idea scares her so much that she doesn't feel comfortable talking to me. i don't get it but i think she is too hooked into the whole overage/underage thing.
Fonzarelli 01-07-2006, 05:11 PM You're 14? I thought you were much older (that's a compliment!). I think IRL it's weird, but I don't see the problem when it's on an Internet message board.
Michael [hXc] 01-07-2006, 05:30 PM thanks. :) yeah i'm 14. the only thing is how this woman i am referring to, originally told me she was in her 20s. and i always said my real age.
Parakeet03 01-07-2006, 05:35 PM I think its fine for people who dont know each other and are far apart in age to just talk online. Its nothing unless u give out personal info.
KristinHerreraFan 01-07-2006, 07:33 PM JUST ONE COLOR PICKIN MINUTE!!
My best friend Elena is 31 years old, and we are really close, we met eachother on the facts of life board, and we talk online a lot, she's very nice.
We both love facts of life. I warned her on our first chat that I am only 16, she said she has no problem, because the age doesn't matter if you are really good friends :) And I agree, in my opinion, that woman was just being a *beep*

aaaaaanyways, i dont see the big deal, unless you are trying to hook up with her or something disturbing.
BTW, I think you should tell her yer lying and you are REALLY 70 years old but you didn't want her to be scared off...
Michael [hXc] 01-07-2006, 10:52 PM i agree with KristinHerreraFan. i guess if the only thing she can base a friendship on is age, and if she wants to give up a good friendship because of it, she's a ****ty friend anyway.
dawsongirl 01-07-2006, 10:54 PM Eh, if it weirds her out that much, you're better off not talking to her anyway. There are plenty of adults on boards who might not have a problem being net buddies with a kid. Not much different than a teacher/student (and I don't mean the whore teachers and the horny boys).
Michael [hXc] 01-07-2006, 11:03 PM i guess you're right. but she was like "i can't speak to you as an adult or from an adult point of view if you're underage. it's wrong, immoral, and illegal". maybe she has some sort of sexual agenda planned out  but if so, i am glad she isn't talking to me anymore.

O_o Sounds like she wanted to cyber. Creepy.
Michael [hXc] 01-07-2006, 11:19 PM well she did act weird when she thought i was an adult but i think i am better off not talking to her anyway. :)
G-Force Glockstar 01-08-2006, 05:26 PM This kind of reminds me about a year ago when I was a big Full House fan, I started talking online to this guy who was 18 and a fan of Full House, but then after we told each other our ages, he's like "Oh, well then we probably shouldn't talk".
It doesn't make sense. I think anyone can talk to anyone online, regardless of age.
Michael [hXc] 01-08-2006, 06:57 PM yeah it's not like any of us plan to meet up and have sex with anyone we know online. and if the adult is a stalker, they wouldn't suggest not talking to us, and we certainly have no intention of meeting up. i don't get it.
Brad Russ 01-08-2006, 07:20 PM You just have to be careful. With all the freaks and sickos out there, I can understand where the lady is coming from. The only times Iv'e ever chatted with anyone under 18, is if they initiated the chat with me. I would never knowingly initiate a chat with someone who is underrage. That's just my own personal choice on the matter. Actually, when I really think about it, the only people under 18 that Iv'e ever chatted with, were people I knew from S.O.
Dean Winchester 01-08-2006, 07:31 PM to play devils advocate for a moment.... a lot of people think if a kid is friends with an adult... that adult obviously has to be a "pedophile". Actually, I might cordially talk to younger people on here, but I won't be actual friends with anyone under 17 because of being burned in the past.
About three years ago, on AOL, there was a group of us who would generally talk in a private chatroom who were mostly posters from a certain board. A lot of us still might go into a private chat from time to time, talk about personal stuff, music, tv, whatever... and we're all adults (youngest usually about 20-21 up to mid/late 30's), and one day one of the people in the board linked the chatroom to the message board, and a 16 year old came in there, and keep in mind, he was 16 with the mentallity and actions of an 8 year old... for a few nights afterwards he'd be asking any one of us to invite him to the room, until we all decided that none of us want to talk to him because he was VERY immature and annoying (keep in mind, a lot of the teenagers under 16 here are mature, but this guy wasn't... he'd be going on and on and on about meeting Hilary Duff and stupid **** that NONE OF US CARED ABOUT) and he decided to exact "revenge" on us by posting all our names on the board and saying we (there was like nine of us) were all online pedophiles who were trying to molest him. Nothing happened because it was 9 against 1 and several of us threatened to press charges, but since that incident, I don't want to be friends with anyone under the legal age.
Now I will talk on here nicely and have conversations with people who are younger that share interests, but since I was branded a pedophile because I didn't want to listen to a 16 year old going on and on about Hilary Duff, I am very cautious about who I'll actually chat with.
Fonzarelli 01-08-2006, 09:50 PM i guess you're right. but she was like "i can't speak to you as an adult or from an adult point of view if you're underage. it's wrong, immoral, and illegal". maybe she has some sort of sexual agenda planned out  but if so, i am glad she isn't talking to me anymore.
Maybe she was real hot...
:p
Polniaczek033 01-09-2006, 06:03 PM i, personally, don't see a problem with it if it's just a light chat friendship. but i can see where she's coming from. don't take it too hard.
dawsongirl 01-10-2006, 01:42 AM Woah. Woah. Woah.
Speak for yourself.
dammit...I was gonna say that.

spunkygirl 01-10-2006, 12:44 PM I don't see anything wrong with just talking to her. See I'm talking to you and you're 14 ;)
