View Full Version : Why does Jay Leno joke about the bad ratings of TV shows that are aired on NBC?-lol
TVFactFan 01-04-2006, 12:41 AM Does anyone else think this is stupid? The fact that he is poking fun at the struggling ratings at shows that are on the same network as his show? I thought he is only supposed to make fun of a tv show with bad ratings from another network

I don't think it's stupid. Conan O'Brien does the same thing. I guess Jay figures what are they going to do if I make fun of the network? Fire me?;)

I just thought since they are both apart of the NBC family why joke about struggling shows on the Network that you are apart of.
Mr. Television 01-04-2006, 02:00 AM I think David Letterman used to joke a lot about CBS too.
snl 70s show fan 01-04-2006, 02:57 AM its nothing new johnny carson used to do the same thing
PrettyinPink55 01-04-2006, 03:44 AM I actually think it's funny!
TVFactFan 01-04-2006, 10:47 AM Oh well I didn;t know that. I thought Jay was just running out of things to joke about and decided to joke about the ratings of the network he is apart of.
Tweety 01-28-2006, 08:39 PM Guess he figures that joking about crummy shows that are failing makes up for all of the promotions of crummy shows he has to sit through as host of the info-mercial known as "The Tonight Show".
I love Leno, and I usually listen to his monologues (and I love the way he does "Headlines").... but I hate celebrity self-promotion, which is all these 'interviews' really are...
Jay: Do you have a clip of the show?
Guest: Yes, they gave me a clip, but I'm not even sure what scene it is...
(yeah, right)

and, I think Jack Parr used to do it, too.

I don't think Carson did it during the Cosby show era-lol
imthe80s 02-06-2006, 11:20 AM Leno's been joking about NBC for years. Letterman was really nasty to NBC, then he started the CBS jokes when he switched over.
hee hee...
Hey, many times the networks make poor decisions and put dreadful shows on.
Like they think we want to watch this stuff? So why not joke about it.
Letterman really gave it CBS when they aired that Noah's Ark mini-series.
That was probably one of the worst shows ever, I turned it off after a couple minutes. blah.
:p
sweetdiggity 04-16-2006, 01:36 PM I think it's really funny. Nothing is off limits to Jay, that's why I love 'em. :D
TV Knowledge Fan 05-11-2006, 06:50 PM ...that goes all the way back to STEVE ALLEN: ***** a hole in your network's "big ego" and let the viewers know how bad their schedule REALLY is! Steve was good-natured about NBC's "disasters"--Paar was rather wry about that---Johnny, of course, was a master at "deconstructing" the prime-time schedule and his OWN show {when Carson stopped appearing in the 11:15-11:30pm(et) segment of "THE TONIGHT SHOW" in early 1965 in favor of starting at 11:30-- he wanted his monologue to be seen on ALL NBC affiliates, and the 11:15 "start time" was pre-empted more often by expansion of the "11:00 news" to a half-hour in most major markets-- he remarked, in one of his monologues at that time, that the only people who saw the first 15 minutes of the show were "the Armed Forces (overseas) and four Indians in Gallup, New Mexico". Ed McMahon usually fronted the 11:15 segment with Skitch Henderson [or Milton DeLugg] and the band until January 1967, when the show "officially" started at 11:30, the way Carson wanted it}.
Jay knows NBC is once again a "sinking ship", and possibly he's secretly glad that, by May 2009, he'll no longer be a part of it after Conan O'Brien succeeds him as host of "THE TONIGHT SHOW".
TV Knowledge Fan 05-11-2006, 06:52 PM SORRY! The word should have been...."poke".

Thanks for the Info because I would have never know it was a tradition. I used to watch Jay and say-"why is he making fun of a network that pays him?-lol

It was probably done by the host (I forget his name) of the show "BROADWAY OPEN HOUSE" the show which came before "THE TONIGHT SHOW" and showed NBC, CBS and ABC that people would watch TV at that hour. Before that, most stations signed off at around 10 or 10:30, because the powers that be didn't think people would watch TV late at night.

treky 05-12-2006, 08:37 AM THAT'S his name; I couldn't remember it. And Morey Amsterdam (Buddy on "The Dick Van Dyke show") and someone else (can't remember his name either) were regulars on it.
TV Knowledge Fan 05-12-2006, 01:47 PM .....Jerry Lester didn't host "BROADWAY OPEN HOUSE" EVERY night in 1950-'51---Morey Amsterdam was the alternate host on Tuedsay and Thursday nights, while Jerry fronted the show on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. When Lester left the show, it just about collapsed. Supposedly, he had almost every one of his shows in storage on kinescope, but nobody was interested in running them anywhere......
treky 05-13-2006, 01:04 AM that's right; that's right; I forgot the whole story. Thanx for reminding me!
But; did you know that Sigourney Weavers grandfather (or father; I forget which) Sylvester "Pat" Weaver came up with the idea for "THE TONIGHT SHOW"?
TV Knowledge Fan 05-14-2006, 01:55 PM ..."Pat" Weaver was an advertising executive (originally with Young & Rubicam, I believe)- knew Fred Allen personally-- before he became affiliated with NBC.
He originated the idea of "THE TODAY SHOW" and "THE TONIGHT SHOW", and
the "spectacular" (specials, as we know them today) while at NBC. Very intelligent and articulate, as well {now you know where Sigourney [nee "Susan"] got her smarts!}.
His brother, Winstead, was also in the "business"....as "Doodles" Weaver, who was a long time vocalist-collaborator with Lindley Armstrong "Spike" Jones.
