I mentioned this to a few people the other day. I still remember what I was doing on 12/31/1999. I watched the ABC Y2K special all day long. They covered New Year's EVERYWHERE. Australia, New Zealand, France, London, China, etc. Amazing. Later that night, my older sister and I made a run to Kmart for a couple of things. We got there at 10:30pm and we left at 11pm, with one hour left of the 90's to spare. I still think it is pretty cool that I started high school in the 90's. :D

I think the first time I ever stayed up to watch Dick Clark was on NYE in 1992. Before that, I would just go to bed and my parents would awaken me at midnight to let me know that it was the new year. I still remember my mom waking me up to tell me that it was 1990... Hard to believe that it was 16 years ago.

Next year will be the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana's death.

And this year marks the 5th anniversary of 9/11.

Unfortunately, these were all very sad events.

My first memory will have occurred 20 years ago this year, and that scares me just a little. :lol: Even though I was only a little kid at the time, I remember the 1980s pretty well. I started school in 1987, so that will be 20 years next year.

It also creeped me out to think the same thing about 9/11 in the fall. It will have been half a decade since I was a junior in high school when 9/11 occurred.

I'm one year younger than you, but I agree substituting the years. 1979-1989 felt like a VERY long time, and I definately had enough time to stop and smell the roses between 1989-1999... yet 1999-onward has been like riding on one of those rollercoasters that goes 300 miles a minute, it's passing by too quickly. Back as a kid, when December 31st would come along, you really felt "wow, a lot happened this year", now it seems like 12/31 comes right as you actually are finally settling into "the new year", lol.

And think about it. There are a TON of TV shows I watch(ed) that debuted shortly before I was born. There are a good handful of 1980s TV programs I enjoy. NBC ruled the airwaves in the 80's with an iron fist, and Saturday night was their best night. There were also a LOT of TV shows that debuted on NBC in 1984 that became hits. The Cosby Show, Hunter, Night Court (debuted as a mid-season replacement in January 1984), etc....the list goes on. The lot of them I remember watching while they were still being originally broadcast. But then comes the programming that debuted AFTER I was born. The Golden Girls, MacGyver and Growing Pains (to name a few) debuted right after I was born, so there is no way I remember seeing them in their first season. It's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that these shows are 20 years old now. But there are others that debuted after I was born that I remember watching. Full House debuted in 1987, and I can remember watching it in their first season, because I had older sibs or cousins that also watched FH. Just think...FH will be 20 years old next year. :eek: :lol:

OFGMDF ME TOO! The thought of leaving highschool and starting somewhat of a different life scares the **** out of me.

I remember you telling me about that. Freakyyyy. :eek: :lol: I don't think I ever watched 227 when it was on. I do remember seeing it in the lineup but it never grabbed my attention. But GG, I definitely watched that. We all loved GG, so I watched that when it was still being originally broadcast. Ditto for Designing Women (I know, you're not a fan). That debuted in 1986 and my mom was SUCH A HUGE DW FAN. It rubbed off onto me eventually, so I can remember watching DW when it was on too. 1992 and 1993 ended one era of excellent programming. It seems like a lot of TV programs debuted in 84/85 and ended in 92/93. :( Then there were the shows that debuted in the late 80's (Married With Children, Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld) that enjoyed a very fruitful run of 8 seasons or longer...Another era of great programming that came to a close in 97/98. And you are right about the latter shows you mentioned. It does seem like just yesterday these shows were just premiering. IT doesn't feel like it with W&G, but it DOES feel like Charmed has been on forever. :lol: Another show ending this year is 7th Heaven....10 seasons. :eek: Truthfully...it should have ended 2 or 3 seasons ago, because it just got too soap opera-ish when they introduced even more people to the cast. :barf:

Oh, I just thought of one more thing. On July 1 of this year, it will have been 15 years since Michael Landon died...he was truly a great actor. It makes me cry to think about it. He was far too young to die. :( That's another thing...I wasn't ACTUALLY a fan but I do remember when Highway to Heaven was on. Damn, it ended 17 years ago... Sometimes it is hard for me to watch HTH now when I think about what happened to Michael. :(

another thing that is scary about years flying so fast is that I actually remember remember my nephew being born in September 1988, and he'll be turning 18 in a number of months, it was only so long ago when he was a tiny little baby and now here he is almost 18. Even scarier is that my niece will be 19 next month and I actually remember when my parents and I flew out to Washington state because her twin sister had died at about 10 days old and she was such a tiny baby and near death and was so small and helpless.... and now that small and helpless baby is in college hoping to get into law school.

Same here. The summer of '92 was freaking awesome...but sad at the same time. The first half of '92 was a lot of fun but I would just like to forget about the rest of that year. My life turned upside down by the end of that year. I would love to go into a time warp machine and fix what went wrong. :mad:

I have a cousin that was born in October of 1988 too (Halloween, to be exact) and I remember going to the hospital to see my new baby cousin. He was so tiny and I could just see him in the little bed thing they put babies in. :lol:

Another fun memory to share with you wonderful posters.

My family and I went on a family vacation to Disney World. I remember a LOT of the trip. We went through Epcot, saw parades, went through the Haunted Mansion, visited the Disney characters, etc. My mom says I remember more about the trip than she does, and I was barely 5. This was in January of 1990. While we were at Disney World, one of my cousins was born. She'll be 16 soon. I still can't get over that. Seems like yesterday she was a baby. :lol:

me too, I vividly remember going outside around 11:30 that night, walked around the neighborhood a bit (it's a fairly safe neighborhood) and pondering if everything was going to die at the stroke of midnight, and then not a thing happened

There's a Family Guy episode that aired in December 1999 and is seen a lot in reruns that actually spoofs the whole Y2K pandemonium to a tee.

Fall of 1986 was when I really started watching TV independently from either of my parents, and I remember watching a lot of MTV in hopes looking forward to seeing Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" video and Janet Jackson's "When I Think Of You". Another thing that makes me sad is how the younger people on here, e.g. the ones born in the early 90's, barely remember the 90's. :( I'm sure that most people born in 1994 or earlier were in school before the decade ended. So however much any one of you guys remember of the 90's, awesome. Treasure these memories forever. :) It just makes me sad that the kids born in the early 90's weren't even 10 when the decade ended.

I remember 1987-1990 VERY vividly. I am blessed to have been born when I was. I got to start school before the 1980s ended, was in grade school during the early 90's, middle school during the mid-90's, junior high and high school during the late 90's. But oftentimes I wish I had been born earlier so that I could have TRULY experienced being a teen or adult (not just a young child) in the 1980s, and be there to SEE the evolution of technology occur. I do remember a lot of fun stuff from the 80's. Floor TV's were still commonplace, VCR's were GIGANTIC and half the time they were top-loading. Mobile phones were still young. There was no such thing as digital cameras... I could go on.

If only you guys could have experienced that. :( Some days it really irks me how fast technology is evolving. I wish it would slow down a little. Sheesh!

I was going through my hundreds of VHS tapes earlier and found a tape from New Year's Eve 1999 into 2000... it was bizarre to watch all the Y2K stuff that never happened. We had just gotten internet a week earlier. Hard to believe it's been 6 years...

Hey, don't feel bad--in two years, I'll be 60! Wait until all you kids are my age. I can look back on 50 years of television. And I saw it first-hand, not just on cable, video or DVD. I was there!

But, to quote John F. Kennedy: "I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation ..."

I saw it all: from Howdy Doody and Elvis in the fifties to The Flintstones and
The Beatles in the sixties ... the wars, the assassinations, the lunar landing
... a half-century of history within my lifetime. You want to talk about feeling
old: I've seen the audio cassette, the 8-track tape, and the Beta video tape
all come and go. I finished high school before the original STAR TREK series
began! I was born the year HOWDY DOODY debuted and was five years old
when TV GUIDE became a national magazine. I began attending college the
year Walt Disney died. I was thirty when Elvis Presley died.

Do I feel old? Of course. But I also feel lucky to have been there during the
"Golden Age of Television" and see all those great shows when they were
new. And to hear all that great music when rock 'n' roll was new. I never
dreamed that, decades later, I would still be watching those same shows
and listening to that same music with a whole new generation seeing and
hearing it all for the first time. This is a remarkable time to be around, and
I'm kind of glad that I'm still here to enjoy it.

I was in...4th grade when 9/11 happened. I was 9. We were in math class and the principal came in, when on for an hour about how safe we are hear at school, then talked about the incident. I thought it was a joke at first. Then I thought "oh it was just a little crash...". Then I got home and my mom explained the whole thing to mean my friend and I was like :eek:

Umm...I think I was like 4 or 5 when princess Diana died. Im not sure. I dont even know that year she died.

I was in...4th grade when 9/11 happened. I was 9. We were in math class and the principal came in, when on for an hour about how safe we are hear at school, then talked about the incident. I thought it was a joke at first. Then I thought "oh it was just a little crash...". Then I got home and my mom explained the whole thing to mean my friend and I was like :eek:

You know what else I really miss? Top-loading VCR's. Yeah, they were GIGANTIC, but they were still cool and "lyk OMG that is so0o0o0o0o0 80's!" modern-looking. On more than one occasion as a kid, I pretended that our top-loading VCR was a NES and I would try to put the NES cartridge into the VCR. :lol: Don't worry, I didn't damage anything, I just pretended like it was a NES, since you put a cartridge in the same way you did with a tape into a top-loading VCR.

I don't know about you guys, but IMHO top-loading VCR's were definitely underrated.

I was going through my hundreds of VHS tapes earlier and found a tape from New Year's Eve 1999 into 2000... it was bizarre to watch all the Y2K stuff that never happened. We had just gotten internet a week earlier. Hard to believe it's been 6 years...

Oh I remember the day well... got up at 3:50am CST to watch the whole event on ABC... Kiribati celebrated at 4am. It was crazy.

I cant wait until I get to high school so all of this middle school **** couuld be over with. I hate middle school with a huge passion.

I was so happy to be not only out of middle school, but, out of that crappy school district. High school was better.

well, freshman year in high school was hell and actually a rather dark and depressing time in my life, especially the first few months. Sophomore and Junior years were a little better, but while senior year sucked, I just kept thinking "May 30th - graduation" was just around the corner and whenever I'd get down, I'd remember "in seven months, this will all be over", etc...

You guys think it's bad now. From age 30 on, it's like life in fast motion. I'm not kidding.

it all depends if you take the Tarc to and from, and have classes alongside sophomores, who love picking on "frosh". It got better when my dad started picking me up after school and I got moved to other classes, but the first 2 or 3 months were pure misery... and at the same time, eighth grade was the time of my life just months earlier.

I hated freshman year too. Really, it just differs from person to person. My high school years were eeriely a lot like John's. Hated freshman year, LOVED my sophomore and junior years (the two BEST years of HS for me) and just plain didn't like my senior year.

The first three weeks of freshman year was awesome, then it went downhill when I experienced a death in the family. I took it pretty hard. Things started to pick up in the spring, but I still didn't like freshman year. I can't decide which one I liked better, sophomore or junior year because they were both equally awesome. The highlight of my junior year was going on a week-long school trip to Washington DC. THAT was wicked awesome. :D By senior year, I was just plain sick and tired of school. I still did pretty well but I was ready to throw in the towel.

You just wait til senior year...the same thing will happen to you. It happens to everybody else. It's a fun little disease called senioritis (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=senioritis). ;) :lol:

I agree :) Junior and senior year were just awesome. I too was a quiet kid-- I only talked to the people in my immediate circle, although I wasn't really a snob or anything. I just didn't get along with the majority of the "popular" kids. But by senior year, I was definitely coming in to my own and gaining more confidence, which continues to grow 'til this day :)

Mine was. All that freshman week crap didn't even happen to me. But from sophomore-senior, it just got worse.

be there to SEE the evolution of technology occur. I do remember a lot of fun stuff from the 80's. Floor TV's were still commonplace, VCR's were GIGANTIC and half the time they were top-loading. Mobile phones were still young. There was no such thing as digital cameras... I could go on.

IIiii had a toy mobile phone, those huge 80s models. Ha, I wonder what happened to that thing. We had to put tape over the speaker part because the noises it made were so loud.

Not everyone. Middle school was the best years. I hated high school. I couldn' wait to get out. Of course, I had the whole "family moving from school to school" thing factored into my freshman year, so that didn't help any.

i was VERY lucky to physically survive my own mind in my freshman year. i've never been such a deadly threat to myself and my peers in my life, and it was triggered by social factors at school (and no it wasn't any "she stole my boyfriend" garbage). yeah i don't mean to scare you all with my story, all high schools are different, the people are different, so it wouldn't make much sense to expect what happened to someone states away to happen to you as well. for the record things have generally been looking up for me since then; i've gotten seriously involved in choir (which has really brightened up my life in several ways) and developed a voice i get complimented on left and right, which i quite prefer over being called a whore and having **** thrown at me in the cafeteria. and i've found a friend who really saved me..i don't think she even knows it but my life would have been terrible since the beginning of this school year if i didn't have her.
