View Full Version : Fear Of Flying?

I haven't flown in 16 years, after a terrible flight and the plane being knocked around by turbulence. I honestly believe I'll never step foot on a plane for the rest of my life.

How about you?

Im not afraid of it. I get a little freaked about taking off and landing, but other than that Im good. I am afraid though of flying over water, but that hasnt happened yet.

Love flying. I've done it nearly every year for the last 16 years or so. One of my first plane trips was when I went to Disney World in Florida with my family in January of 1990.

For eight school years, I commuted to and from my dad's house some weekends to visit him. I was attending a deaf school, which was also a boarding school...so the school had dorms and kids who were from out of town and stuff like that. I lived at home with my mom in the town where it was at, so I was a day student and didn't live in the dorms...but I had divorced parents and my dad lived about 200 miles away so it was easier for me to join the out-of-town kids and catch a flight to visit my dad. I figure I was on the plane a good 300 or more times during the eight years I commuted to my dad's via plane.

The last time I was on a plane was in March 2004, when I flew clear across the Atlantic Ocean to go to London. That was a new experience in itself for me... Having to get a passport before I left, going through customs, etc. It took about 10 to 20 minutes for me to go through customs at Gatwick when I got to London.

On the way home from London, I had the (un)fortunate experience of having to go through customs at Detroit Metro. Detroit Metro is only the worst airport I have ever been in, and customs took a good 45 minutes! :faint: :wallbang And, yeah, the airport itself sucked major ass. Never setting foot in there again. I had to fly to Minneapolis from Detroit, and the pilot who flew us to Minneapolis was a dumbass. :cuss:

Next time I fly will be in March, when I head off to New York City. The next time I am on a plane after that will be to Los Angeles.

I loooooove flying. It's so much more fast than car trips. I hate coach (but so does everybody else) but it's always worth it in the end. :D I've been in a couple of planes that had pretty roomy coach section, so that was great. :)

Love it... I hope to start flying more in the coming year or two. I'd take a 2-hour plane ride over a whole day in a cramped car any day of the week.

After the 9-11 attacks I had a huge fear of flying but I flew at least twice in a plane since then. I didn't find it so bad.

Flying overseas is a different story. I have a morbid fear of that.

I've only flown once...My friend and I flew home from Florida by ourselves while my parents stayed for a few more days. I thought it was fun.

I hate flying. The concept of being so high up in the air in a machine that could malfunction at any second is not appealing to me. I've flown once, and it was a relatively smooth ride, but yeah. I won't do it unless it's absolutely necessary.

With all the security at the airports, I'd rather drive than fly. When you drive, you get to see the entire country as opposed to seeing clouds. Although I will only drive or take a bus, I do not have a fear of flying.

I only fly if forced. I've hated flying since I was born pretty much. One year I had a stuffed up nose or my sinuses were stuffed up I guess and I blew out my middle ear. That plane ride was HELL. I hate airplanes. And I double hate airplane toilets. I can't stand long flights...anything over an hour or 90 mins is too long.

My mom and dad want me to go to Hawaii with them. HELL TO THE NO. The only way they'll get me to fly over water is if I'm unconscious.

I love flying!! I wish I did it more. I haven't flown since 2003. I love the rush at the beginning of the flight, when the plane is going down the runway and it's going faster & faster then you finally lift off. I just hate when I'm on a crowded flight. It's great when the plane is only half full and you don't have anybody sitting next to you.

Funny thing......

Prior to my very first plane ride in August 2000, I was always under the impression I really would not be able to handle it and would have such a strong fear over it. I mean, I have always been fearful of heights. I can't even climb a ladder without shaking with fear.

Then I flew on a plane and realized it wasn't so bad. And that was only an hour flight from my city to Las Vegas. When I went to Europe and flew on the nine-hour flight across the ocean, I wasn't scared at all. I tolerated it quite well.

And to think I STILL have a fear of climbing a ladder that's only about seven feet tall. Funny how things happen....

BTW, yes, I love flying, so that was my vote on this poll. ;)

I absolutely love flying!! I did it for the first time in September, and can't wait to do it again. The best part was, I got a seat right next to a very friendly and beautiful woman, which only added to the experience. :D

Yeah! I do too! It's weird, but I always look forward to it.... That is a good rush after the taxing and the take-off! Wooo!

I was lucky going to Amsterdam and coming from Amsterdam how there weren't many people on the flight, so I was able to actually "sleep" horizontally stretched across the middle row seats. Not so many people. It was comfy!

I can't really say I have a fear of flying since I went up two times in one of my brother's airplane back when he owned one.
It was fun to see the scenery from up there but I'd rather have both feet on the ground.
At least I was able to take some photos while I was up there...

I have never had a problem with security in the airports I have passed through. As long as you are aware of what is allowed in with your carry-on, you will be fine. I really haven't noticed much of a change in security since I started flying 16+ years ago. I have never had to wait for very long going through security. Five to 10 minutes, tops, even at Gatwick. The only thing I hate about airports is how there are always too many people running around. And these little airport carts? WATCH OUT.

It has been reported as true that flying in a plane is WAY safer than traveling via car. Car accidents occur daily; plane crashes don't.

The flight attendants cover the safety precautions before the beginning of each flight. There are emergency exits in each class and the seat cushions can double as flotation devices should the need arise.

If you have a layover in Los Angeles on the way to Hawaii, I am thinking the flight won't take too long. Two hours tops, maybe? It was MUCH longer with me on the way to London, but I left from Minneapolis so we had quite a bit of North America land to cover before reaching the Atlantic. They made sure to fly near Greenland.

It really isn't bad at all. If you don't think about it, you will be fine. Focus your thoughts on something else and try to keep yourself distracted during the flight. :) But I'm sure you knew all that. Do you do the gum trick if you have ear problems during the flight? I do, and that helps a lot.

The only part I hate about flying is the jetlag. When I came home from London, I had MASSIVE jetlag. I had to get adjusted quickly to the six-hour time difference quickly when I flew to London, and it took my body two WEEKS after coming home, to get adjusted to the time difference. :faint: But it really was worth it. :D

If I could... I would join you on a flight and show you that there isn't anything to be afraid of. :) I understand your feelings, though. I just want you to know that you shouldn't have to hate planes.

That's the only way I'll go is if I fly out of LA. Last time my parents went, they left from Phoenix, and I think it was about 5 hours.

Flying over land, I'm more anxious about the confinement. I won't go to the bathroom, half the time anymore they never feed you...last time I went to Phoenix, they didn't feed me, so I didn't really eat all day, and I was so sick when I got there. There's some stomach pain I never want to experience again. And it's not that I'm claustrophobic, just afraid of the fact that I'm stuck.

Back then, I don't think I chewed gum, because it always gave me air bubbles in my stomach and they could get painful.

I'm not afraid to fly.The last time I flew was in summer 2004. I didn't like the ride because it was so long and it made me tired but when its short, I like to fly.

I love flying. So much. I've been flying since I was 6. From when I was 6 up until I was 9, we flew back and forth from Florida every February. We stopped flying there after we got stranded in DC. We now drive down, except last year, where we flew again.

I also flew to Oregon by myself last October, to go on a road trip with my cousin. It was my first time flying by myself and I loved it. I had a layover in Chicago, which was awesome.

And then last June, I went on THE most pointless plane ride ever - to NYC. I live in Syracuse, NY. It's a 5 hour drive. Or train ride. No, we had to fly. It was crazy. Everyone thought it was crazy, except for my mom and grandma, who arranged it. I was in the NBC store once we got there and this guy was giving me a survey and he was like, "Where are you from?" and I said, "Syracuse" and he said, "Okay, how did you get here? Did you drive?" and I said, "No, we flew" and he gave me a look like o_O. It was amusing.

But yeah, I LOVE FLYING.
