View Full Version : Mental disorders in families
Howdoulikemenow333 12-21-2005, 02:35 AM I have know people with bipolar and when they forget what they take they go crazy. Some people dont want to be put in a label like mental disorder, or drug abuser, or anything like that. I have suffered from depression for a longtime. now it's better been taking meds for it. Now I have type 2 diabetes, I just hate being labeld. I know what I have got and the so called dr's knows it's just between me and the dr. Anyways the point is the dr or persons who are resposable for people meds need to read the directions. To make a long story short when people have bi polar, don't tease them. Just help them if they need help. Even depression can be very hard at times, I know when I got it I was just like a Zombie. One dr said you have something more something, or you have a lot something wrong with you, Based on your IQ Forget that I am fine, and taking care of my self. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Janice 12-22-2005, 12:25 PM I know someone with bi-polar disorder, and I know how devastating it can be for everyone involved.
It seems that you've taken charge of your mental health, and I wish you the very best of luck. :)
Kay Scarpetta 12-22-2005, 12:54 PM Oh my God, I forgot to take my meds one day and ended up in the ER under a suicide watch the next day (even though I had absolutely no intention of knocking myself off!) but my point is, things are really scary for me when I forget to take my meds.
Courtnee 12-22-2005, 02:39 PM I suffer from depression and borderline disoter. I don't take meds for it (which i should) because I'm afarid to go to my parents and tell them about it. I can picture what my mom would say. "What have you got to be depressed about? What do you do that takes so much of a toll on you?? Your just a chilld,You don't know anything!" I'm depressed probably because of my mother. She's always saying degrating **** to me. She yells at me all the time. I really don't have a life because of her. She never lets me go out and do anything. I've tryed to run away but it didn't work. She called my dad and he came and found me crying by some trees. No one really wants to know why I'm so sad all the time. I'm always looking for ways to cheer myself up (part of the reason why I joined SO).
I have a backup plan for when it gets too bad. I haven't had to go there yet but I kind of have a feeling my mom is going to kick me out of my house soon. But I'll just call them and they'll come get me.I don't know why they label depression as a diesese. I mean,I don't have growths coming out of my head. It's not a disese and I hate it when people call it that.Because Thats not how I feel....
Meh.
p.s. I found a really good website for depression www.depressionhurts.com

I'm assuming that you mean Borderline Personality Disorder? If you did a self-diagnoses of that, then I'd really wait for a doctor to diagnose you. That disorder is a VERY tricky thing to self-diagnose. It's very complicated. Plus, you're only 14 years old. Psychiatrists are supposed to wait until you're at least 18 to diagnose you with BPD, because that's when they can truly tell if you have it or not. One of my doctors thinks I might have it, but the thing is, the disorder can also be confused with other disorders and normal teenage feelings- that's why they have to wait so long to diagnose it, they have to wait until you're developed. In some states, it's also illegal to diagnose you if you're under 18.

I am postitive I have it. These are not normal feelings for someone my age to have. It's not normal.
Meh.You would just have to be me to know...
Mr. Stefani 12-22-2005, 05:14 PM My family is just really ****ed up. Does that count?

oh f-ck, i tried to quit paxil cold turkey three years ago without knowing how dangerous it was and i cried and wanted to kill myself so badly the whole day. no matter where i was or what i was doing i perceived everything in such sorrowful ways and i could not stop the tears from flowing. it was bad, i took paxil the next day and i was better, and shortly after that i weaned off of it.
depression is all i know. i don't even notice it, i'm not used to being happy.

dawsongirl 12-23-2005, 01:33 AM "What have you got to be depressed about? What do you do that takes so much of a toll on you?? Your just a chilld,You don't know anything!"
Oh holy ****...I ****ing HATE when people say that! Like the only reasons people should be depressed is because they got a bad grade, or had a fight with their boyfriend. **** THAT. That's just sadness. Argh...just because you look happy doesn't mean you are...and if the only thing you're "depressed" about is superficial crap that goes away the next day, then you're not depressed and don't even ****ing act like you are.
If you've ever wanted to kill yourself over someone who was never really a friend to you, even months after the fact, or you go along seeming happy, and then you think of something and you just want to break down and cry right there, then you can talk to me about being depressed. Until then, stop ****ing whining.
Sorry...I sort of went off there. I just get mad at people who don't understand mood disorders.

I'm telling you... I took a psychology course at a local state college and we focused mainly on the DMV-IV. Don't diagnose yourself, it can lead to trouble. Just wait for a professional.
eltonfan80 12-23-2005, 10:27 PM i suffer from ocd
Hollow 12-23-2005, 11:46 PM i suffer from ocd
don't even get me started, OCD is the biggest effing demon in my life. though i'm even more used to it than depression, which is sad; i don't know what life is like without, to put it as briefly as humanly possible, always feeling random intense urges to have physical and virtual things in any situation irrelevently arranged and done in specific ways. ok that probably sounded like i copied it from the dictionary or something. it started when i was about six and has just gotten worse throughout the years.
Redd Foxx 12-24-2005, 04:17 AM I have never shared this with anyone on any board I have been on online. I think I should though since this seems like a very nice place, and people care about you here. :)
I have been Bi-Polar since I was 10 years old. I am 17 now. Things are going great now though. I have been to Boys Town for about a year and a half, and a mental hospital called Richard Young for about 11 months. I was an angry, sad, messed up child. I have great parents, great house, great family, and great sister. I was messed up in the head, literally. I have been off and on medications since I was 10. I was taking 9 pills a day at one point.
I once gained over 40 lbs. in one summer. I was a skinny little kid, ribs sticking out and all. I am not obese, but have suffered some stretch marks, etc. Anyways, things are good now. I take 900 Mgs. of Lithium (Eskalith) (2 450 Mg. Pills), and .5 Mgs. of Risperdal each night. I was on 2 Mgs. of Risperdal for the longest time. We have been reducing it by .5 Mgs. every month, for the past 3 months now. Things seem to be ok without it.
I am taking flax-seed oil (omega 3 fatty acid) each day (1 Tablespoon). The Doctor says it will help my brain function. I am also drinking a protein shake 4 times a week (After I get back from the Gym). But yeah, things are going pretty good now, I have been through quite a lot in the past 7 years.
If anyone ever needs to talk about mental health, just PM me or something. Life is a, well, you know, but we should try to make the best of it. :)
I don't push faith on no one, because it is teaches own in my opinion, but God, Lord Jesus got me through all. I believe that, and pray every night, but that is another issue.
Dean Winchester 12-25-2005, 04:45 AM pretty much a trait with McMillin men is our Irish tempers, my father has it, my brother has it, I have it, but yet my father and I are better reserved and will be the first people to own up to what we've done and apologize, while my brother can be vicious and he seems very unapologetic for his actions... I also consider myself bipolar to the point where it's almost crippling, and my older sister also suffered from depression as well for years before she got on the right meds. And let's not even get into my OCD, man what a catch I must be :( My mom was certainly the "sane one" in our family

Unfortunately alot of people suffer from depression due to hereditary factors. It doesn't have to be "What do you have to be depressed abt?". I am sorry for what you are going thru. I suffered from depression after suffering a work injury that required back surgery. The meds and the therapy that followed really saved me. I had such bad negative thoughts and it can take a toll on your body, not just your mind.
My teen daughter just found out two weeks ago she is type 2 diabetes. She had been suffering from severe mood swings. She sees a therapist for her anger issues as well as her mood swings. It is almost a relief to know that it is due to her diabetes. This type of diabetes can and does trigger severe mood swings. At least now we know what causes her feelings to swing. Now, she is taking meds and what a change. She is now able to deal with everyday things much better.
Alot of people think "mental problems" and immediately think of "shrinks" and being crazy. That's not always the case.
Warm & Fuzzy 12-27-2005, 03:54 AM I've been diagnosed with OCD, depression, and an Eating Disorder -- all which are mental disorders. I have suicidal thoughts ALL the time, and I get really, REALLY depressed. It's not fun. I would be devastated if someone made fun of me. :( It's mostly because of my parents, though, especially my dad.... abusive physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually....
I haven't started taking meds yet because my parents still don't know any of this, and in order for me to get meds, I need a signature of approval. I refuse to tell my parents anything, though, so I'm waiting until I turn 18 (In May) for them. Meanwhile, I'm living it out through hell, speaking to a social worker twice a week, as well as a counselor, and soon, a psychiatrist, as well. Boohoo. :(
Warm & Fuzzy 12-27-2005, 03:59 AM Some Hearts:
I think any mental disorder should be labelled as a disease. Depression is a disease. But that's just my oh so humble opinion. :)
