View Full Version : To all the younger members on here...
Brian Damage 12-17-2005, 03:29 PM ...Do you enjoy watching Christmas classics like Miracle on 34th Street and It's A Wonderful Life? I remember growing up as a kid and enjoying these movies. My daughter was watching "34th Street" with me and said she was bored. If you don't like these movies, is it because they are in black and white? Is it the story? What is it that you don't like about the movies?
TheGreatPretender 12-17-2005, 03:40 PM I think it depends on what your taste is. I used to try to get into old movies like Casablanca and Gone With The Wind, but they aren't as entertaining to me as I thought they were. I do like the old comedies like Animal Crackers and A Night At The Opera.
Karen* 12-17-2005, 03:46 PM I just don't like old movies. =/
Janice 12-17-2005, 03:46 PM I'm not one of the younger members here, lol, but my guess is that these old movies don't appeal to today's kids because they're not exciting enough. Todays movies have all these special effects. Movies like Jim Carrey's, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, are what kids seem to like.
It could be the black and white thing too. It's a shame though because movies like Miracle On 34th Street and It's A Wonderful Life have such wonderful messages.
TheGreatPretender 12-17-2005, 03:50 PM Then again there are several cartoon and claymation Christmas movies that have been around for quite a long time and I didn't meet anyone my age who hasn't enjoyed them.
Chelsea 12-17-2005, 04:39 PM ...Do you enjoy watching Christmas classics like Miracle on 34th Street and It's A Wonderful Life?
Definitely. Ultimately though, I think it's just a matter of most people porn in the last 10-15 years though not having the attention span or patience to sit through a special-effectsless movie, and actually WATCH the MOVIE
Mijada 12-17-2005, 04:45 PM I'm in my 30's now and I love those types of movies but they didn't appeal to me as much when I was a kid. I guess I just wasn't old enough or mature enough to appreciate them like I do now. The black and white thing was never a problem for me because for some reason shows like Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and The Munsters were always able to hold my interest.
Nighthawk76 12-17-2005, 04:53 PM I am not sure if I count as a younger member or as an older member. I am a big fan of classic movies, but I don't really care for those classic Christmas movies. This has nothing to do with the age of those movies, because as I said I love old movies. I just don't like Christmas movies no matter when they were made.
Brad Russ 12-17-2005, 04:54 PM I'll be honest, I don't really care for those types of movies. I love many old movies, but with me, I just don't like most Christmas movies in general. They usually have the same themes, and bore me to death. The only Christmas movies I can really think of that I like alot, are the first two Home Alone films, because they don't just tell a typical Christmas story. I do however love all the old Christmas specials like: the Smurfs Christmas, Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, A Muppet Christmas Carol, etc, but for some reason, Iv'e just never been able to get into Christmas movies, whether they were old, or new.
Superstar 12-17-2005, 05:00 PM I've never seen Its A Wonderful Life, or the original of Miracle on 34th Street, I've only seen the 1993 remake. But I hate old movies, I can't stand the black and white  The only thing I will watch in black and white is anything with Lucille Ball.
Fonzarelli 12-17-2005, 05:02 PM I like older movies very much. I enjoy watching the old 'classics'. Of course, that comes in handy considering my current education (something with Theater- and Film Arts). :)
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-17-2005, 05:27 PM Im not a big movie person to begin with, but Im more into comedies. Ive also never seen either one of those movies, besides snippets so I dont know. As a kid though, I know I never liked those puppet movies - Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town...
snl 70s show fan 12-17-2005, 05:54 PM im not a really young member here but i like all kinds of movies old and new but as far as miracle on 34th street its a very good movie and i try to watch it every year around christmas time but i dont like its a wonderful life at all i find it boring and somewhat sappy
Jonathan 12-17-2005, 06:45 PM I'll give any movie a chance once.
robyrob 12-17-2005, 07:12 PM i find them kind of boring - not a SINGLE car chase or joke in there at all.
seventies_sitcoms 12-17-2005, 07:22 PM I'm not exactly one of the "younger" members here, but I do like old movies. I have many silent and early talking films. I never cared much for holiday themed films unless they are something like Black Christmas, Silent Night Deadly Night, Don't Open Until Christmas, etc..:)
gilligan fanatic 12-17-2005, 08:02 PM I love It's A Wonderful Life. It's my 7th favorite movie of all time. I watch it every year. There isn't a scene in the whole movie I don't like. As for Miracle... I don't think I have ever seen it before.
I Love Carol Burnett! 12-17-2005, 08:36 PM I love old movies, they are my fav!!!!!
EmoJoe 12-17-2005, 08:49 PM Never watched them
rusyd 12-17-2005, 09:17 PM I am not a younger member but this thread is interesting bc I have leant It's a wonderful life to a teenager at work over a year ago and she still has not watched it. I got to get it back before she goes off to college!
YoliUSA 12-17-2005, 09:37 PM I really don't watch old movies, I find them boring. I do enjoy old 60's & 70's color films. As for Miracle In 34th Street and Its A Wonderful Life Ive watched them. My fav holiday movie is "A Christmas Story":)
vienna waits 12-17-2005, 09:44 PM I watched It's a Wonderful Life when I was in 7th grade and found it really boring. But then I saw it on the big screen last week at a theater and enjoyed it much more than before.
Dean Winchester 12-17-2005, 10:04 PM I never liked Miracle On 34th Street or It's A Wonderful Life as kid, though as an adult I enjoy them, but I did love A Christmas Story when I was a little boy, that was a movie we liked so much when it first came on tv that we taped it and watched it many times throughout the year, as opposed to just Christmas.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-17-2005, 11:30 PM I'm 22 and I'm kind of ashamed to say I have never seen "It's a Wonderful Life". Of course, I've seen little bits of it and there's been PLENTY of times where it's been on TV and I could watch it but I just never had any interest to. I've never seen any of those other older Christmas movies either. I prefer ones like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and The Santa Clause!
Shiki Minami 12-18-2005, 12:58 AM I never heard of it before, but I watch Christmas movies sometimes. I only Christmas movies I ever knew was Christmas Story. I have heard it when I was in young childhood age a few years ago.
dawsongirl 12-18-2005, 04:26 AM most people porn in the last 10-15 years
Well...no wonder they aren't interested in these movies! ;)
I just have to be annoying. :D
dawsongirl 12-18-2005, 04:29 AM The only thing I will watch in black and white is anything with Lucille Ball.
Most of my favorite old movies are hers.
Anyway, I've never really seen either movie in question. But then like Crystal, I'm not really a movie fan anyway. Give me a good TV show over a movie anyday.
Sharop 12-18-2005, 08:14 AM I've seen the original "Miracle on 34th Street", quite a few years back, and remember enjoying it - it also plays on the TV in the first Home Alone movie, when Kevin first wakes up and comes downstairs to find the house empty - he's in the kitchen and he switches on the TV for a couple of minutes.
I saw about the last half an hour of "It's a Wonderful Life" a few years ago and remember liking it - I haven't really had much of a chance to watch too many black and white movies, but I certainly don't mind them - I'd watch a movie if it was black and white, and if I thought it was good, I'd continue watching.
This makes me think of the "Cheers" episode in season six - is it called "Christmas Cheers"? - where they watch "It's a Wonderful Life" at the beginning and at the end. I also read that in Home Alone 1 and Home Alone 2, Kevin's family watch the movie on the TV, but it's always in a foreign language - in Home Alone 1, when they're in Paris, it's in French, and when they're in Miami, it's in another language.
theshark8777 12-18-2005, 09:24 AM I think it's just a matter of most people porn in the last 10-15 years
I'm sorry Seth did you say Porn? Is that some kind of Freudian slip? ;):p
Courtnee 12-18-2005, 12:59 PM LOL I prefer a Charlie Brown Christmas! I've seen them I like Its a wonderful life better...
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-18-2005, 01:10 PM I havn't really watched those two particular movies, but old movies in general make me happy. It's like the coziness and the music played in them.
spunkygirl 12-18-2005, 03:10 PM Well I'm 31 but I love old movies :D I know people who refuse to watch anything that's in black and white, they won't even give black and white movies or tvshows a chance ohno:

I never understood the mentality against hating things of a certain age. The Sound Of Music is one of my favorite movies of all time and a LOT of people I know won't give it a chance because it came out in 1965.
*Miss Randomness* 12-18-2005, 08:06 PM I'm not really young, 18, but I like some old movies, depends on what it is though. I love the classic A Christmas Carol
Mijada 12-18-2005, 08:18 PM I never understood the mentality against hating things of a certain age. The Sound Of Music is one of my favorite movies of all time and a LOT of people I know won't give it a chance because it came out in 1965.
I tried to get my niece to watch that movie a few years ago but as soon as Julie Andrews came twirling over the hilltop in the opening scene my niece was like Oh My God, How Boring, I don't want to watch this anymore.
I agree that it's a great film, one of my favorites too.
