View Full Version : the "Merry Christmas" crowd vs. the "Happy Holidays" crowd
Dean Winchester 12-13-2005, 08:04 PM shut the hell up both of you and wish each other a good Festivus ;)
Seriously though, I cannot believe this debate, either way, "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" are both meant for good, For non-Christians, would you be happier if someone wished you a "go **** yourself" than a "Merry Christmas"? Same for Christians with "Happy Holidays". There is so much negativity and arguing over everything that now it extends to what's supposed to be one of the happiest times of the year.
Merry Christmas to all of you and I hope each and every one of you have Happy Holidays. Geesh.
The Modfather 12-13-2005, 08:42 PM I hate those narrow minded ****** who say you should say "merry Christmas" and only "merry Christmas". GUESS WHAT? There are other religions in the world!!!!!! WHO KNEW?!?!?!?
Dean Winchester 12-13-2005, 08:55 PM well, I think both sides are equally bad. People who are offended at "Merry Christmas", sorry, but it IS Christmas, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the birth of Christ. It is a CHRISTMAS TREE, not a HOLIDAY tree. But other people are launching a holy war against "Happy Holidays". I see "Happy Holidays" as lumping New Years along with it, nothing more, nothing less. I also wish they'd stop this "Jesus vs. Santa" debate. Jesus is what Christmas is about, but Santa at the same time is an important symbol of the season and I don't see why people equate the myth of Santa with that of Satan. I think each and every one of you should watch the South Park skit where Jesus and Santa are at a karaoke bar singing together, haha.
Maybe next season, instead of wishing each other "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays", we should say to each other "your mom's a whore", "suck my ****", "go **** yourself", "that outfit makes you look fat" and "eat **** and die", I'm sure that is just so much more pleasant and kind than wishing each other happiness and merriness, am I right or am I right?
Penny Lane 12-13-2005, 08:59 PM All of my long life it has always been "Merry Christmas" This Happy Holidays thing is very recent. I am all for not offending anyone but come on........... this time of the year was Christmas first. And I guess I should be offended when someone says to me Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. I am not offended because Happy Holidays to me means Merry Christmas AND Happy New Year. Which are 2 separate holidays.:D

I agree! That's what Happy Holidays means to me- Christmas and New Years. All this "Happy Holidays" stuff only recently started and this whole new thing where it's a "Holiday Tree" and not a "Christmas Tree"
It's getting really ridiculous. I'll say Merry Christmas to whomever I want to.

That would RULE.

Anyway, people should say whatever they want. When people move here or live here, they need to accept the fact that this country is Christian by majority and Christians celebrate Christmas. And for that reason, they shouldn't be offended. Just like if a Christian went to the middle east and someone wished them Happy Ramadan or something. Hardly something to go balistic over.
And since the US is also a retail country, Merry Christmas could also mean Happy Shopping. :D

The holiday tree thing is so ********, THE TREE IS MEANT TO SYMBOLIZE CHRISTMAS, NOT HANUKAH. Should we start calling the dreidel a "Holiday dreidel?"

Ahaha, exactly  People need to shut up. We have nothing to complain about so we search for things that are so pointless. Hell, let's not use words anymore. Just go hug someone. I don't care if he's disease ridden or Jewish...just go hug the son of a bitch.
EmoJoe 12-13-2005, 10:33 PM People saying "Happy Holidays" doesnt bother me , but its the people who spaz out when someone says "Merry Christmas". "OMG!!111111!!! SAYING MERRY CHRISTMAS IS ILLEGIAL!"

Go choke on a fruitcake and Merry Christmas and yes I mean ONLY Merry Christmas.
Chad Michael Murray 12-13-2005, 10:54 PM Yeah, I don't mind "Happy Holidays". If that's what somebody wants to say, then I don't have a problem with it at all.
BUT..
The thing is, and I'm sure this is why it bothers so many people, is that we shouldn't be STOPPED from saying "Merry Christmas". If stores want to have up Christmas decorations, then they should be ALLOWED to have up Christmas decorations!! It wouldn't bother me a bit to see Hanukkah (or Chanukkah, if that's your bag) or Kwanzaa decorations up...because I know people are celebrating that!
Therefore, anybody who doesn't celebrate Christmas...don't piss on our parade and ruin it for everybody. Feel free to say "Happy Holidays", just don't say I'm discriminating when I say "Merry Christmas".

Have you ever actually met someone who spazzes out when told Merry Christmas?
I think this is a myth overblown by the media, etc.

When not attending WKU, I live in Rural KY. I have seen people visibly freak out when someone has said Happy Holidays.

Mr. Television 12-13-2005, 11:10 PM Go choke on a fruitcake and Merry Christmas and yes I mean ONLY Merry Christmas.
:woohoo:
I never heard about this debate until recently. When I was growing up I never heard Happy Holidays much. It was mostly Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Chelsea 12-13-2005, 11:49 PM KY = rednecks
Well, uh, not quite :). There's, uh, me. And Louisville. Louisville isn't a redneck area at ALL. Bowling Green's about 50/50 mixed. Few other clusters here and there aren't either.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 12-13-2005, 11:50 PM Happy Chrismahanukwanzakah :)
Janice 12-13-2005, 11:51 PM This isn't simply about saying Merry Christmas, and everyone here knows that. It's about the word Christmas being removed from tv and print ads and inside their stores. It's about the continous attempt to rename the Christmas Tree (which is what it is) to the holiday tree. For a while, Sears was calling them 'Wishing Trees'.
It's about the ACLU suing when nativity scenes or anything else that smacks of Christ or religion is on display. It's about schools rewriting the words to Christmas songs and sanitizing their Christmas plays of religion. It's schools calling Christmas vacation....the Winter vacation.
It's when Target won't allow the Salvation Army bell ringers outside their store. It's companies not allowing employees to wish one another a Merry Christmas.
It's political correctness run amuck.
It's the attempt of some to remove religion from Christmas, despite the fact that America is 85% Christian.
No war on Christmas? A manufactured scandal? Not on your life. It's very real, and we didn't start it. The people who want to keep Christ in Christmas are accused of making a big deal out of nothing or are accused of being right-wing religious fanatics.
All we're trying to do is keep it the way it's always been. We didn't start this, but we're defending it.
I'm not even a religious person, but I do believe in God. I want the little ones in my family to grow up having Christmas plays, singing Christmas carols, and to know the meaning of Christmas - the birth of Christ.
I don't want the Christmas Season to become just a 'Winter Holiday'. That's how some would like it. There's endless examples that illustrate this.
The good news is that those who are allergic to religion are losing. Bigtime.
In the last week, Target and Sears have put Christmas back in their advertising and inside their stores. Wal-Mart has issued a statement that next year, they'll put Christmas back. Macy's, after removing Christmas references last year, is in full Christmas mode this year.
These stores, fully aware of their bottom line, finally woke up and stopped pandering and caving in to the the politically correct morons. Many people don't want to buy their Christmas gifts at a store that won't recognize Christmas.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert was successful in getting the Capitol tree called the Christmas Tree again. Same thing with the Christmas Tree that goes on the Boston Common. They never should have been RENAMED in the first place.
The backlash has been overwhelming this year. Christmas is back in Christmas. For those who claim it never mattered to them in the first place, no big deal right?
Merry Christmas :tree:
spunkygirl 12-13-2005, 11:55 PM Well said Janice :D
Personally both sides need to grow up  I grew up saying "Merry Christmas" and I wasn't raised as a religious person at all, that's just what people said was "Merry Christmas" and it didn't mean anything more than wishing someone something good.
Dean Winchester 12-13-2005, 11:59 PM well, the part that threw me for a loop was the backlash Bush got over people calling him a "traitor to the Christian community" for wishing somebody Happy Holidays, I honestly never realized there was such an uproar about and against Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays until I heard about it on a talk radio station. There is so much hatred and strife in the world, so many diseases, plagues, people getting raped and murdered, etc... and yet people are launching a Holy War on people who want to wish people "Happy Holidays" because wishing somebody something with the word Happy in it is bad?
Bootsy Whoosh 12-14-2005, 01:02 AM No war on Christmas? A manufactured scandal? Not on your life.
Well actually, what I was saying is a myth is the idea that people get upset at being wished a Merry Christmas. I just don't believe this happens very often.
I have wished a Merry Christmas to several Jewish people before, not knowing they were Jewish, and they all said thank you and then politely informed me they celebrate Hannukah. And as someone pointed out, many people who celebrate Kwanzaa also celebrate Christmas, so they wouldn't be upset. And a large percentage of the non-religious folks celebrate the secular side of Christmas, so they wouldn't be upset.
There's no denying that the absence of Merry Christmas from print ads, etc. is a real thing, but what I was getting at is I don't think very many "Average Joe" Americans, i.e. not CEOs and not the ACLU get upset about the term Merry Christmas. I don't like that many people seem to imply that all the lefties or all the non-religious folks are causing this war on Christ, when in reality it is a handful of corporations and the ACLU, not someone like me. That's as absurd as calling Bush a traitor to the Christian community. (which I actually had not heard about until HUNGUP mentioned it....)
"Aren't we forgetting the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of Santa"-Bart Simpson ;)
The Modfather 12-14-2005, 07:43 AM Go choke on a fruitcake and Merry Christmas and yes I mean ONLY Merry Christmas.
I love how if I tell someone that they make ****ty threads I get a talking to by Janice, but if you tell me to "choke on a fruitcake" everythings okay.
Happy Holidays.
MsOrange 12-14-2005, 08:43 AM MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!!
Brad Russ 12-14-2005, 09:42 AM Holidays means Holy Days, so I have no problem with that. As others have said, most Christians aren't offended by Happy Holidays, but by the censorship of the word Christmas, and the censorship of many of our customs. Anyone would get upset if someone tried to censor something that they hold dear in their traditions, or religions. That's just human nature, and Christians are the same way. We're human beings with feelings and emotions just like anyone else.
Steve M. 12-14-2005, 11:52 AM Hannukah and Ramadan are bull**** holidays.... everyone I know who celebrates them has said so themselves. I've never met anyone that celebrates Kwanzaa, but it has nothing to do with religion, so they shouldn't be offended by Merry Christmas because from what Ive learned, whoever celebrates Kwanzaa celebrates Christmas as well.
The only reason they're made into a big deal is because they fall near Christmas.
Hannukah is overblown, but so iss Christmas. the holiest day in Christendom is Easter Sunday, and the Puritans even banned Christmas celebrations in colonial Massachusetts. (Just like Masschusetts liberals to wage war on Christmas! ;) )
Ramadan fell in December in 1998. This year it fell in October. In a few years it will fall in July. That's becasue the Isalmic calendar is shorter[/I{ than the Christian one! :p
Kwanzaa was started by an African studies professor at California State University at Long Beach (never confuse a degree from a college or university in a seaside resort town with a degree from Harvard!) named Maulana "Ron" Karenga, who considered Christmas "a white man's holiday" and created a holiday for blacks to celebrate as a "F:censored: YOU!" to mainstream white America, also known as "Disneyland." Kwanzaa celebrates a black separatist idea of community (white people have no sense of community, 'cause they live in the suburbs and practice rugged individualism!) that encourages left-wing cooperativer economics. Take that, John Birch Society!
One black Christianminister spent his college years campaigning for black people not only to celebrate Kwanzaa but to ignore Christmas entirely. Who was it?
[I]This guy! :racist:
Dutabi84 12-14-2005, 06:36 PM I'm in the minority as far as thinking this War on Christmas is stupid. Who cares? Don't like hearing "Merry Christmas", or "Happy Holidays"? Tough ****, go dig a hole and sit in it for the month of December. And boycotting stores because they use one of those phrases and not the other is hilarious.

Yeah, a few years ago.
Dean Winchester 12-14-2005, 08:17 PM And boycotting stores because they use one of those phrases and not the other is hilarious.
so true. "Happy Holidays", "Merry Christmas" and "Seasons Greetings" are all much much nicer than what the employees at most of the retail stores REALLY want to tell the customers after they're done with them
Courtnee 12-14-2005, 08:45 PM I just say both. Happy hoildays when I'm speaking in front of a crowd and Merry xmas to my friends...

Dean Winchester 12-15-2005, 02:18 AM the official "Heathen National Anthem" (passes earplugs to Steve, lol)
"Holiday"
Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate
[Chorus:]
If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice
Everybody spread the word
We're gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It's time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday
[chorus]
You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday
[chorus]
Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate
[chorus]
Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate
Holiday, Celebration
Come together in every nation
TheGreatPretender 12-15-2005, 12:47 PM I think it's ****ing ridiculous that some people get offended at Merry Christmas. I mean HELLO?!?!? how am I supposed to know whether you celebrate Christmas or not without you telling me. I mean I wouldn't get offended if someone said Happy Kwanza to me.
Pitooey 12-15-2005, 01:12 PM  Janice you've done good! ;)
Now........................ I will never, ever not stop saying "MERRY CHRIST MAS" as long as I'm here on earth.
At the bottom of my signature I wrote Happy Holidays to all. By that I meant whatever you believe in......... Kwanzaa, Hanukah, The 3 kings....
If ANY store decides to take out Merry Christmas! You will bet that I won't frequent their store! Hmmph!

if a store is run by Jewish people, why boycott it for "Happy Hanukkah"?
I am sorry, but I laughed when I saw Jerry Falwell wishing a holy war against "Happy Holidays" and everyone who uses it. I mean seriously, I don't know about you, but I'd much rather be told Happy Holidays than be told some of the things that have been known to come out of Falwell's mouth.
They're just words!!! I have two words for anyone who gets mad at either "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas", and it isn't either of those words, life's short, stop the Scrooge act.

Jerry Falwell is an extremist on this issue, and I don't believe he represents the majority of Christians. Why he would have a problem with a term that was derived from the words Holy Days, I do not know. This whole issue started when the ACLU started telling people they couldn't sing Christmas Carols, or have nativity scenes in there yards. Like always, they start all kinds of trouble, and then everyone else except them gets blamed for it. I see through the ACLU's garbage. They're a bunch of hypocrits, who fight for everyone's civil rights, even pedophiles, but not for the rights of Christians who want to say Merry Christmas. Janice sent me an email recently that pretty much sums up the ACLU. The Anti Christian Lawyers Union.
Dean Winchester 12-15-2005, 04:57 PM I wonder how many people here saw the first South Park Christmas special (I swear, there's almost a South Park episode answering everything).
Kyle's mother, the town's resident "stereotypical Jew", got offended because the school play was going to have a nativity scene, and then the Christians got upset at the presence of "Satan" Claus, so then they tried to put on a Christmas play with neither Jesus or Santa and it turned into a really awful gothic new age play with "happy happy happy happy happy happy" over and over and then both the Christians and non-Christians realized just how stupid they've been acting when they saw the crap that came up to please all.
You know it's scary when life imitates eight year old episodes of South Park, lol
MsOrange 12-15-2005, 05:02 PM HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND MERRY HOLIDAYS!
Gizmo1 12-17-2005, 01:11 PM I just put up Happy Holidays, for everyone, not matter wut it is you celebrate. I celebrate Christmas, but if someone would come up to me and say "Happy Hanika"(no idea how to spell it, sry), i would just be like "Thanks" and be happy someone said something. Its not really a big deal.

I totally agree with you on that. I'd be honored if a Jewish person said Happy Hannukah to me. The fact that they'd take the time to acknowledge me, and in some small way make me a part of their historic Holiday, is something I'd take great pride in.
