Scene opens on a smiling David. He is carrying a briefcase and a heavy grocery bag. He is walking up to a 2-story house in a very nice neighborhood.
Inside we hear the laughter of children. On a couch sits a girl of 17. She is tall and has brown hair and green eyes. She has the same smirk as David, which is on her face now. On the floor are her 2 sister. Sarah is 13 and Sabrina is 9. They are playing a game on the TV and not paying attention to their dad.
David walks in and peeks around the corner. “Anyone home?” he calls.
He is greeted with shouts of “In here dad!” He smiles and starts putting the groceries away. In comes Brittany, his 17 year old. She starts helping him put the groceries away.
“Your home early today dad, what’s up?”
“I have something that I need to tell you guys and I wanted to do it tonight before you guys go to bed.”
“What is it dad? Another all night case?”
“Sort of, although this on is going to last a little longer this time and I am going to need to travel.”
Brittany sighs and walks into the other room. She knows that her dad loves his work but sometimes she wishes he did something else.
David walks into the living room. Sarah and Sabrina see him come in and pause their game.
“What’s up dad?” asks Sarah.
“Yeah dad, what’s up?” mimics Sabrina.
“Well, I have a new client.”
“So what’s so special about that? You always have new clients.” Quips Sarah.
“I know, but this one is different. You see I am going to have to travel to New York. I will be gone for about a week.”
All three pipe up “A week?!”
“Yes a week. I called Bert and Agnes and they said that are happy to watch you while I am away.”
Hearing this Brittany gets up and walks into her room. Sarah and Sabrina look at each other with questioning glances. They shrug their shoulders and look at their dad.
David wonders what is wrong with his oldest daughter. He gets up and walks into her room.
“Okay, so what’s up with you? Did I say something wrong?”
“It’s nothing really.”
“Then why do I feel like I am getting the cold shoulder?”
“It’s just that I am almost 18 now dad and you are still treating me like I am 10. I can watch the girls. I have a license now and can take them to school. Plus Bert is weird.”
David smiles at his daughter. He realizes that she is right. Bert is weird, and she is old enough to be trusted to help out.
“How about we compromise? I’ll have Agnes check in on you at night. I will call you and get you a cell phone to use while I am gone. Does that sound fair?”
“Really dad? You mean it?”
“Yes, I think you are old enough to help out with looking after your sisters. Don’t let me down Pumpkin.”
She smiles at her dad’s pet name for her. She never really liked it before, but for some reason it doesn’t bother her that much tonight.
David walks into the kitchen and begins to cook dinner. He is thinking about a lot of things that night. Mostly he is thinking about how complicated his life has turned out. He wishes their mother could be here to help him. Especially at times like this, times when he needed someone else to talk to. Tara was someone he could always count on. She was someone special. It was at time like this that he missed her most.
Early the next morning David is packing and hurrying so he can catch his plane. Brittany is up making breakfast for him. He smiles when he remembers her first attempt at it. Black toast and runny eggs, she was only 11 so it was a big deal to her. She has really become a great cook. David runs to the kitchen and sits at the table. Brittany puts a plate in front of him and he starts to eat.
“This is great honey.” As he finishes up his other daughters stumble into the kitchen.
“Hi dad.” They both mumble. They are definitely not morning people. They take after David in that respect. David finishes his breakfast and gets ready to head out the door.
“I am out of here. Just remember that I will have my cell phone on all the time. If you need anything don’t forget to call.”
“Yes dad, I know and Agnes and Bert will check up on us. I know the drill dad.”
David laughs as he heads out the door. He is nervous but doesn’t let on. This is going to be a major test for him and the girls. He only hopes he can keep from going crazy with worry.
David arrives at the airport and checks his bags and gets ready to board the plane. He is flying first class. He sits in his seat and closes his eyes. He doesn’t see the person who sits down next to him. It is only when he hears his name that he opens his eyes.
“Well, if it isn’t David Addison.”
“Maddie?” He opens his eyes and sees a face from the distant past. The years had been good to Maddie.
She smiles and says “None other!”
David laughs and says “So are you headed to New York on business or pleasure?”
Maddie laughs and says “It is all pleasure. I am meeting my mom there and we are going shopping.”
“Always the shopper, huh Maddie?”
Maddie bristles at this and says “What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing is wrong with it. It just an observation, that’s all.”
Maddie rolls her eyes and says “Some things never change.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“You still the same old David! Always judging people by what they used to do.”
“You’re a fine one to talk. Ms. I know that David can never be responsible enough to be trusted with my heart! Well, Ms. Hayes I have made out just fine thank you!”
Suddenly his cell phone rings. He picks it up and barks loudly “Hello!!”
Brittany pulls the phone away from her ear and says “Jeez dad!! Yell at me next time!!”
David smiles and says softly “Hey Brittany! What’s up sweetie!?”
“Um, dad! I was just wondering if me, Sabrina and Sarah can go to the movies tonight?”
“Just make sure you girls finish your homework!”
Sabrina smiles and says “We will and the chores will be done and the house is clean.”
“Okay! Then you can go! Just make sure you lock all the doors and leave a note for Agnes.”
“Thanks Dad!! You’re the best!!”
“So you tell me!! I love you!”
“Love you too sweetie!! Have fun!!”
They hang up and he leans his head back and smiles. He loved his girls. Maddie had listened to the conversation. She wasn’t sure if he was talking to a girlfriend or not. She kept quiet and they rest of the plane ride flew by.
David stood up to get his carryon and bumped into Maddie. He said “Sorry Maddie!”
“Well, I guess this is goodbye.”
“Bye Maddie. It was nice seeing you again!”
“Same here David.”
“Bye.”
“Bye blondie blonde!”
Maddie smiled a bittersweet smile at the nickname and waved a sad goodbye. They each walked out of the airport alone. They each hailed a cab and went their separate ways….
“Whenever you remember” By Carrie Underwood is playing on the radio.
When you look back on times we had
I hope you smile
And know that through the good and through the bad
I was on your side when nobody could hold us down
We claimed the brightest star
And we, we came so far
And no they won’t forget
(Chorus)
Whenever you remember times gone by
Remember how we held our heads so high
When all this world was there for us
And we believe that we could touch the sky
Whenever you remember, I’ll be there
Remember how we reached that dream together
Whenever you remember
When you think back on all we’ve done
I hope you’re proud
When you look back and see how far we’ve come
It was our time to shine
And nobody could hold us down
They thought they’d see us fall
But we, we stood so tall
And no we won’t forget
Whenever you remember times gone by
Remember how we held our heads so high
When all this world was there for us
And we believe that we could touch the sky
Whenever you remember, I’ll be there
Remember how we reached that dream together
Whenever you remember
Yeahhh, Ooohh
We claimed the brightest star
And we, we came so far
And know that we showed them all
And no they won’t forget
Yeahhh
Whenever you remember times gone by
Remember how we held our heads so high
When all this world was there for us
And we believe that we could touch the sky
Whenever you remember, I’ll be there
Remember how we reached that dream together
Whenever you remember
Whenever you remember
Ooohh, whenever you remember
