Guys,

Notice how each kid when he/she was sick had individual food items prepared for them? That must have been hard on Carol and Alice! Six different lunches for six different kids. A tidbit that might be slightly unrealistic here:

Measles can are generally accompanied by a low-grade feaver. It is doubtful that the kids would be hungry or willing to eat the kind of food that was given to them. More than likely, Alice would have made soup and crackers, applesauce, easily digestable foods for all of the children.

no, the real question abt this episode is how were they able to get TWO DOCTORS TO MAKE HOUSECALLS?????? that's unrealistic. And why was a big deal made abt WHICH DOCTOR??? My God!! So what, let the girls remain with their pediatrician and let the boys stick with their pediatrician. Man, sometimes this family (or the writers) made mountains out of mole hills.

Agreed!

In fact, Barry Williams made this very observation in his Growing up Brady book.

But back to your original question abt the foods...yeah, how many times have you been sick and you could care less abt eating??? Just give me peace and quiet, some juice, the remote and I am fine.
And that's another thing my response would be: "You eat what I give you" or "You eat what there is...there's soup and crackers, that's good for you" Hell, I wouldn't be making six different lunches!!!

Back in the 60's, doctors did make house calls.

Guys,

Another observation on this episode: While the make-up department did a good job simulating the red skin on the kids to show measles, (especially Jan,) notice that the kids don't really act sick at all!!! The joke around, they play games. (all of them playing Monopoly in the girls room.) Probably the ONLY realistic thing was their impatience for things shown in this episode.

And what's up with the Monopoly game? Jan wins a County Hospital and Peter wins a yacht. One problem, those don't exist in Monopoly.

The name Monopoly is covered up with money. (Maybe they couldn't use the name for legal reasons.) But, as a sidenote in a Leave it to Beaver episode where Beaver plans to take stuff to go on a camping trip, Ward says, "Oh Beaver, I don't think you need to take your Monopoly game with you."

It's OK if you mention a product, but it's another thing entirely if you show it - then you need permission. Since they were already partially showing the board, they likely felt it was safer to make up some fake properties so that it was clearly a different game from Monopoly.

Sure they did. It was much rarer than it had been in earlier decades, but some still did. And Carol and Mike alluded to how rare it was to have two doctors who made house calls.

Our family doctor even made house calls into the 1970s.

They covered up the Monopoly label because the show wasn't getting paid to advertise for the game company. You know when you can see that Coke can on CSI? CocaCola is paying the production company of that show huge bucks for product placement.

Something else about the male and female doctors: It was decided at the end of the episode that the family would simply use two doctors: the boys would have the male doctor, and the girls would have the female doctor. So then...where was the female doctor for the girls later in the series? In the following season, Cindy was visited by the doctor when she needed her tonsils out; and later on, in Season 4, the doctor visited Marcia when she claimed to be sick on her first day of high school - but these doctors were male. There was no complaining about the male doctor then.

I can remember a doctor making housecalls to our home around '66-'69, but he may have been the only doctor in town who still did that. More surprising about the doctors making housecalls on tBB is that we see it a couple of times in the 1st or 2nd season of All in the Family, which would been '71 - '72. Was it different, perhaps, in New York, where so many people didn't drive, and it would have been so hard, when sick, to walk several blocks for the subway or bus?

Anyway, the reference by Alice to "not letting the AMA know about" 2 doctors making house calls to the same house is probably reflexive of the timely topic of eliminating house calls as part of regular practice. Doctors phasing it out likely said it's far better for the patient to come to the office and have all the equipment and clinical help at hand. But is was probably the money angle at least as much; more patients per unit time and less mileage on their Cadillacs or Jaguars.

I remember some variety show from around 1970 where they made fun of this topic in a skit. Some guy needed a plumber to fix his water heater, so he called the plumber and he was told "We don't make house calls." Then he brought the water heater in and they had it laying on a table with parts of it draped while probing with instruments  .

Guys,

What drove me buggy about this episode was that if you notice when Carol calls Dr. Porter and Mike Calls Dr. Cameron, they are able to get to the doctor immediatey. Carol says, "Hello, may I please speak to Dr. Porter." and Dr. Porter is right there as if she has nothing to do and is just waiting for Carol's call!! Mike is already TALKING to Dr. Cameron. Both can drop everything at the drop of a hat, and come on over to see the kids! No setting up an appointment, no talking to a receptionist (except perhaps Carol asking to speak to Dr. Porter.) Times have sure changed. Today you get an automated voice-mail and you have to give your name, medicine you take, special instructions, phone number contact, and than a nurse calls you back. You almost NEVER directly speak to your doctor unless you are there for an appointment.

That's what I mean too abt this episode. So unrealistic. C'mon, I was a child of the late 60's and never did doctors make housecalls. Even then, you still had to go thru a receptionist. Never could a doctor be right there to take your call. They usually take a message and if the doctor has time, will call you back.

and why didn't either spouse inform the other that they were going to call their favorite doctor? Carol and Jan sure seemed surprised by the male doctor.

As for housecalls, I kinda believe that doctor's used to do it. However, I never had one come over to the house for me. And I'm 38.

I am 40 and never was that heard of...I only knew abt doctor's making housecalls from old 50's sitcoms. As young as I was when this episode first aired, even then, I was like "no doctor makes housecalls anymore!!"

That look on Jan's face was hilarious!!!!

"Only if you keep your distance"- Jan:lol:

Why were Jan and Carol afraid? Did they think Alice would let anyone into the house to examine Jan? And besides, Dr. Cameron knew Alice.

And y'all are right. How can they eat so well having the measles? I had a bad flu bug a couple of years ago and lost weight. I was out of work for the entire week (which was great since I had all of my TV shows/DVD's/videos to watch). I didn't want anything but ginger ale and soup, LOL

Not only that, those were the healthiest looking "sick" kids I have ever seen. They were being brats over the lunches. How the hell all 6 of them are sick at the same time and day? I would have called the ambulance and got those brats up out of there! LOL

All the episodes are unrealistic in general, but I'm a child of the late 60s and our doctor did make house calls. It wasn't common then, but it happened. Now, finding two doctors who made house calls - yeah, that was more unrealistic.

That too...like i said in my earlier post "Eat what there is or eat s**t!!!!! LOL I didn't post that, but come on, it made you want to say that to those bratty kids. I know when I have been way sick, food is the last thing on my mind!!!
