Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington (Lawrence Hilton Jacobs) for the longest time I thought it was him who sang the theme. It wasn't until I heard the song on the radio the first time ( I was eleven) that I heard the singer's name. The guy who sang it is the same guy who wrote it. A goofy looking white guy with glasses. I couldn't believe it. I wonder if any of you thought the same thing.

Me and my brother thought that too for the longest. Especially when John Sebastian(the guy who actually song it) sings the part, "Yeah, where where we need you! Tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot, welcome back!" We think just alike, Irene.

John Sebastian was also the lead singer of a very popular '60s group named
the Lovin' Spoonful. Does anyone out there remember them? They had a
string of hits, incl. "Summer in the City," "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your
Mind?," "Do You Believe in Magic," and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice." Both
"Summer in the City" and "Welcome Back" went all the way to Number One on
Billboard's Top 40.

Yeah, I discovered that in the 70's. As a matter of fact when I hear a song by the Lovin' Spoonful, I can't help but think of John Sebastian and that song. Alot of my friends and classmates thought the same thing abt the song.

I rememerber John Sebastian, even when he was with The Lovin' Spoonful. I saw him at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis back in the 80s. He opened for Robin Williams and yes, he did sing the theme from Welcome Back, Kotter.
