For example, Haywood Nelson's character, Dwayne, from "What's Happenin'!!"...we all knew that his catch phrase was "Uh-uh!" He did that even in the seasons when he was older, and his character was still very lovable. That is one of the main things his character was known for just like "dynomiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite" was what JJ's character was known for. Therefore, maybe if they let JJ continue to say his catch phrase, the show would have continued to be fun to watch.

I don't know what to say on this. JJ did invent this catchphrase. I wonder who had the final say so on it's use. The writers, the producers, Esther probably wanted the character to "grow up" and stop being made to look juvenile. Good post. Wish I knew.

I know some people don't like JJ's catchphrase... but I agree with you... it brought an element of fun and craziness to the show. Yes they tried to fit it in at awkward moments, yes you could see it coming but it was a sitcom and JJ made it a riot!

I liked it and it was real funny to see his Dynomite PJ's, but I am glad they gave it a rest.

yeah, but I am sure that Rolle didn't expect it to be like the way it was. Maude was comedy, but there was no crazy antics done by anyone. There was no stereotypical "black comedic" antics that Esther was opposed to. She was probably under the assumption that since Good Times was some sort of product of Maude, that it would deal with issues in the same fashion. Remember, Jimmie came up with the Dynomite phrase during rehearsals; the producers loved it and incorporated it into the show. It was not something that could have been forseen by Esther.

Maybe they wanted to appeal to a younger audience... kids would've loved someone as animated as JJ, and they clearly did.

Yeah, that's another catch phrase which I wish he kept. "I knoooooooooow" was a lot more catchy than "well you know, what can I say?"

Plus he was the perfect foil for all their jokes!! Some guys are just physically funny. Chris Farley, John Belushi, John Candy were all hysterical without telling jokes!!

George Jefferson was funny because he was a jive turkey that acted ********...

Seems to me in real life James Evans should have had a better chance at success. But it doesn't fall in line with Hollywood making rich people look smart.
