Afterwards, my friend told me he had a problem with a man that don't watch sports because he questions their manhood. I don't follow sports. I like to watch a baseball game every once in a while, but that's about it. I blame it on my older brother who was such a jock when I was a kid that he pushed all this aggressive sports crap on me. I was too much of an intellectual and an aesthete, and he ragged on art and stuff--only because he wasn't artistic himself. I would cringe when he criticized my art projects and cartoons, but then I realized he most likely felt inadequate about being a BIG DUMB JOCK. I still haven't fully forgiven him after thirty years.

Not really. He's sort of into Nascar, but I hate it. Nascar is just as much a sport as parallel parking.

I grew up a non-sports fan. I didn't get into watching baseball or basketball until my 20s. Once I got into those sports I got into them heavily, checking standings and schedules and statistics. I still don't watch football though. I'll check out the Super Bowl but that's about it.

Your brother sounds like a lot of people I grew up with. Back in high school (I'm guessing around 1992-93) It was a bunch of us just kickin' it in our cafeteria, talking about the up coming NBA playoffs at the time. We were making predictions on who was going to win. It was this one dude in the crowd, didn't get into the conversation. He had on his walkman, but he wasn't playing it. He then said he don't watch sports, he likes hip-hop instead, and went out of his way to bash every atlethe especially Michael Jordan and how he hated him, because was in his first run of 3 straight championships.

I don't see anything wrong with a guy not liking sports, but it does seem a bit odd. I've always been a fan of some sport or another, but now I'm mostly into the NBA although I follow most sports.

I'm not a diehard sportsfan like my brother and father.
Those two can talk about a team or a player for hours - I honestly think they could have thier own talk show on a sports radio station.
That's not to say I don't know what's going on. I try to keep up with what the local teams are up to, in case it comes up in conversation. Since I live in New York, my Dad asks me a lot of stuff about the New York teams.

But as I said, I'm not a hardcore sports guy, so don't ask me to name the entire Giant's offensive line.

ALl of that is true about soccer, the "non-American," or "communist" ( :rolleyes: ) sport, except there are no sexy cheerleaders, no mutliple scoring, no interminable timeouts, no rough physical contact (except between the fans), and no gender restrictions (i.e., women can play it, and they do play it very well).

I know a lot of former football stars and players who earn BIG $$$. These same people donate some of their $$$ to worthy organizations. I also know a lot of grown men who appreciate football for what it is. They know the importance of the sport when it comes to raising a male child.

A woman's place is inside home and man's place is outside of the home. Both compliment each other just perfectly. The woman takes care of the home and the children while the man goes out in the real world by having a job, making money, thus providing for his family (which includes his wife). Both the man and the woman are serving each other. So where can you go wrong?

A woman's place is inside home and man's place is outside of the home. Both compliment each other just perfectly. The woman takes care of the home and the children while the man goes out in the real world by having a job, making money, thus providing for his family (which includes his wife). Both the man and the woman are serving each other. So where can you go wrong?

This is getting totally off topic, but I'm just curious. What about all the single mothers or single fathers or the families where both parents need to work? Did you watch the Super Bowl this weekend? If you’re like hundreds of millions of people around the world, you probably did.

And if you watched the showdown between the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens, you couldn’t miss Baltimore’s imposing inside linebacker, Ray Lewis. From his pre-game boogie, to the announcers hyping his “fairy-tale-like” season after he was named the game’s MVP, Lewis dominated the telecast.

But Lewis should be used to all the attention, considering he has been in the national spotlight since he was accused of a double murder before the season began. The charges against Lewis were eventually reduced after he pled guilty to obstruction of justice and testified against his former friends. Some fairy tale.

As if this “feel-good story” wasn’t enough, we all had the privilege of hearing how Giants’ quarterback Kerry Collins courageously overcame his alcoholism to prove that he actually isn’t a racist after all.

Is this what the NFL has come to? Are we to think that these people are our heroes, as the media would have us believe? Have we become so desensitized to violence that now we hardly blink when hearing of the arrest of another player?

It would appear so, as Lewis is hardly an aberration with many big-name players currently serving time.

Former Green Bay Packers’ tight end Mark Chmura is presently in jail, pending the outcome of his current case. He is accused of sexually assaulting the girl that babysat for his two children! I know that he is innocent until proven guilty, but if the charges are true, what does that say about the type of players in the NFL?

If it’s guilt you’re looking for, look no further than Rae Carruth. The former Carolina Panthers’ wideout was arrested on charges of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend so he wouldn’t have to pay child support. What a standout guy! I can see how making upward of $3 million a year wouldn’t be enough to live on. To be fair to Carruth, he was only found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 18 years, 11 months jail time.

As illustrated above, criminals seem to be abound in the NFL. Yet, how can a league that encourages its players to “kill” on the field expect them to be model citizens off of it? NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue says that the league is doing everything in its power to improve the character of its players. But in the NFL, winning is the bottom line and players with questionable pasts, a la the enigmatic Lawrence Phillips, are always given multiple chances to succeed.

Now, I understand that this is America, the land of opportunity. And I believe that people do deserve a second chance. But the proverbial line must be drawn somewhere. The trend of violence is quickly growing into an epidemic and with classy superstars such as Steve Young and John Elway retiring, steps must be taken to improve the type of people playing and coaching in the NFL, not the talent level of the players.

This thread is to do with sports, so I'd say my post belongs here...it's not entirely what we were talking about, but I was just curious: is tennis seen as a "sissy" sport by some people in the world? I was just wondering, because Johnny Mac mentioned that when he was in school, tennis wasn't hugely popular with many of his classmates. People don't seem to be huge fans of it at my school - I haven't outrightly asked them if they like tennis, but when they talk about sports, it's rare that I hear a tennis player brought up.

As a matter of fact, I wasn't interested in tennis until 2005's Wimbledon and I was watching and found myself enjoying them. Now I wish I could go back in time and watch those John McEnroe matches, which I wasn't around to see.

Not all that play football are upstanding rolemodels. I would much rather my son look up to our Preacher that a man that makes millions of dollars and beats his wife and kids or does drugs!! That being said my son plays Soccer. Being a real man has nothing to do with liking football. How were men real back in the 1800's before football was invented?

On the same token many of the NASCAR drivers donate much of their time and money to worthy causes. Check out the link at the bottom of my signature. Dale Earnhardt Jr. even invites children from the Make a Wish foundation to each of his races. He is very involved with the organization. I would take a man with a big heart over a man with a big ego any day..... I don't find men that sit around screaming at the tv all day sexy.

I work because I want to. I enjoy it. My husband makes enough that I could sit on my butt all day eating bon-bons if I wanted to, but I would be bored stiff. MY house is clean and we each share in the duties of cleaning and cooking. I clean and he cooks. Marriage is a partnership. Personally I wouldn't want it any other way.....

I'm a guy, and I don't watch sports. I know how to play it, and I do occasionally, but I'm not one of the guys who reserve their sunday afternoons to watch football, but that doesn't mean I'm gay.

My father watches sports all the time... from his couch with a cigaret and a bottle of beer in his hands. His health must be terrible, he looks twice as old as he really is, he let my mother do most things around the house (my mother has a job too), he knows little about politics, current events etc.

The father of a friend of mine never watches sports. He doesn't drink beer, doesn't smoke cigarettes, his health is good, he looks younger than he is, he can't work due to a disease but he does all the work in the household, he's very intelligent and knows a lot about politics, current events etc.
