View Full Version : Where's Mabel?
seventies_sitcoms 10-29-2005, 10:46 PM I know some fans didn't think Mabel served much of a purpose to start with, but I really missed her in Season 3. It's not What's Happening without Mabel and her necklace ya know?
I really wished she would've made a guest appearance or two, but she was probably too mad at the network to ever return. Am I the only one who liked Mabel as Mabel?
Brian Damage 10-29-2005, 11:12 PM I really like Mabel too.
robby76 10-29-2005, 11:25 PM I now have new-found appreciation for Mabel, after watching Season 1.
And Mabel was a premier top-notch actress. Excellent timing and nonverbal acting as well.

hoosierelvisfan 11-10-2005, 11:48 AM I reread that TVparty article. It's pretty interesting. It's too bad W.H. didn't do better. Although according to the article, it did fairly well. It was one of my fave shows when I was growing up during its' original run. Too bad "Rerun's" success went to his head. The problems he caused probably helped to lead to the cancellation of the show in part, at least. I still enjoy watching it.

It's a shame Mabel didn;t understand that viewers of this show wanted to see raj and his friends and not her. So if she was looking for a bigger role it wasn;t going to happen because most fans wanted to see the guys at the soda shop making fun of shirley, not mabel at home. So getting rid of her was the right move

it may have been the right move in your eyes, but then who are these two children being watched by? You can't show two minor children in a house with NO PARENTS. If the show stuck only in the soda shop, never showing parents and a home, then maybe. So the beginning of the show should have been abt three guys hanging out at the soda shop, and maybe showing them at school alot more. Maybe add some other things. But to show a home with no mom or dad, would leave the audience asking, who is in charge of these kids?
storrs19 11-10-2005, 07:31 PM I really enjoyed "Rerun sees the Light" as it gave Mabel King a chance to do something besides walk downstairs and leave the house. Seems like that is all she did the entire second season and there were a few episodes that she wasn't even in. I really wish they had done more with her character as I think she was a fine actress.

They should have gave her a husband. She was pointless on the show without a man.

What world do you live in or come from? Why did she need a husband? Also why not having a husband made her pointless?

BECAUSE SHE WASN'T FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Now The Florida Evans character was still able to do a show without a husband because she had acting skills. Mabel Didn't and was very very DRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny how when she left the show it went down after that, that's probably why it only lasted 3 seasons. I loved her on the show, she was a strong character and seemed like the only one, other than Dee who had common sense most of the time.

I am about tired of you dissin' Mabel! You got the wackiest taste I have ever seen! Get a life! Mabel did excellent without a husband! She kept Raj and Dee in check. Mabel was an excellent actor, and if she wouldn't have never left, the show probably would have lasted longer.
You claimed the show revolved around 3 teenagers...which it did, it was suppose to. If the mother was never shown, people like you would wonder where would the mother be. Like I said before, Mabel wasn't there to provide laughs, she was there to be Raj's mother, and she did an excellent job playing a single mother. People can have different effects on a show rather than just providing laughs. You can't be a real What's Happening fan, because you don't appreciate Mabel. I recall in several episodes of season 1, she gave Raj's morals to lessons he needed to learn. How can that be dry?
You need to be ashamed of yourself for bashing a positive character.

that's what i was trying to say...had there been just kids on the show, the topic would be, "where the hell are the parents?" We already have a thread abt where are Rerun's parents. So, the fact that Mabel was hardly used as a good addition to the show, was not her fault. Mabel probably thought things would get better, more solid for her character and realized that it was turning into "Rerun's" show.

You need a straight character on these sitcoms, Mabel was that. Too bad Retro can't understand that. Then again, he liked Judy Cohen, an actress who was nothing and brought nothing. seems to me he likes characters that didn't have an effect on a show, like Tyriq, Will Smith's homeboy on Fresh Prince, you thought he brought more to the show than Jazz, Solomon, you know what I'm talking about, with your strange self. LOL

I think you are trying to get under someone's skin, but it ain't going to work. You know doggone well a parent was needed. I guess you liked season 3 better, because Raj and Dee didn't have parents. Let me give you some advice: Get rid of season 1 and 2, because Mabel King is in it. keep season 3, because Raj and Dee didn't have parents. They had Shirley. Big and Little Earl was there, and The Snake. Cherish this season, Solomon, because this season describe what you want in What's Happening.

My point is this show would have been much better with The guys at the soda shop and school. If these characters were not on the show it would have been great
DEE

Then you woukd only see the guys, shirley, and rob. Wasn't no need to see them at home.

That's what I posted before. If it had taken place solely at the soda shop and at school, cool. But, the show was developed with a mother and a young kid. Dee was awesome, when she was younger. They could have not had adult characters such as Mabel, but that's how they started and once you start like that, you can't go back.

Also, Mabel looked more like their grandmother than their mother which is why I think I didn't like her. She came off as a Grandmom

Irene, don't waste your time arguing with this weirdo! He thinks every show should revolve around his taste...he has no taste! What's Happening was a show based on reality. What should have been like, Leave It To Beaver? I was raised by a single parent. Mabel King didn't look like she should have been their grandmother, you need to take that back because she was an underrated actress one who came into acting late, like Esther Rolle and Isabelle Sanford. They were in their 50s when they got work, and when they did, they did their jobs to the fullest. These are black actresses who took on the sterotype mammy roles to feed their families and open doors for others. To see you sit there and diss Mabel and YOU, as a black man, you need to be tarred and feathered!

Florida had a Husband and Louise's kid was a grown man
GARFIELDKOOL 11-11-2005, 10:47 PM Florida had a Husband and Louise's kid was a grown man
So you knock Mabel because her character was single?! Florida HAD a husband for 2 years. Louise kid was grown? So what?! They were all strong mothers! You didn't listen to a damn word I just posted. I wasn't talking about the real life actresses getting work, not the characters. Why are you so stubborn and why are you trying to argue?

They just had the Mabel character as a LOSER. She had no Man, A Crappy Job, No life, and then her ex husband comes to visit her with his new woman. And then Mabel cooks dinner for the new woman. I can see why the actress didn't like the part because she was a LOSER. Am I lying?
Louise or Florida wasn't LOSERS

She did have a crappy job, and no life, but I don't hate her for it. She took what she had, and did the best she could, and in my eyes she excelled. I looked at the figure she was, not the money she made, yeah, cooking for the other woman bugged me too, but that set Mabel apart from the rest. She gets an A in my book and she ain't no loser.

I'll tell you one thing, Mabel had the best for her kids in mind. She may not have had a HOT life, but she had church and her kids. That's all that mattered to her. She was way better off than Florida. Mabel owned her own home. Her kids had food and clothes and lived nice. There was never an issue of a struggle. Mabel showed that even a single mom can have a good life for their kids without the struggle of feeding them, etc. I loved Mabel. She didn't look like a grandmother. I had friends that had mothers that seemed older to me but looking back, they weren't. It's just abt perception. Not all women have their kids young. I agree with you Kool... I know what you mean and what you are trying to say.

That's a good point you made, Irene. See, Mabel had her own house, bigger than Florida's, and you never heard them talking about them getting evicted. I'll tell you one thing, Retro, at least Mabel liked money. If a dollar came into the Evans household, Florida found that insulting. Florida wanted to struggle, Mabel didn't. Mabel was hungrier than Florida(Don't pick on her weight) Mabel wanted things too and she didn't need a dead beat dad holding her back. How can she be a loser to make a better life for her kids?! I love both mothers to death, and they both meant well, but sometimes I couldn't figure Florida out. And as far as Weezy, all she had to do was sit on her fat ass and wait on George. She had pride, but her bed was made.
nerrad 11-14-2005, 10:21 AM I always like the Mabel character. However, I do agree that they should've made her life a little more interesting. I just couldn't understanding her cleaning house for that couple. They didn't live at a mansion or anything. Or any kids.

Florida had her morals about money, she didn't want to break her family up over it and she didn't want dirty money. I'm the same way I don't like dirty money and don't appreciate where it comes from and wouldn't want it in my house. I wouldn't crack on Florida for living up to her beliefs.
I thought Mabel was a strong woman as well, they did struggle, that's why they took in a boarder. But they didn't harp on the struggle. They didn't live in the best of neighborhoods but she worked hard to provide for her family. I think that if Mabel would have stayed until the 3rd season I do believe that it would have lasted way past then.

Because she brought stability to the show, I think she was an important character and contributed a lot. Funny how when she left the show she was missed, and she made an impression. I believe that when she left, it went down hill from there. You don't have to be a camera hog to be an important access to a show.
