be very careful, i have basicaly stopped in the yahoo sites

every time i read them i see many thieves and poor traders conducting business

ANYONE, and i do mean anyone , can start a trade site on yahoo, even folks that are banned on other trade boards

at times this board lacks action, but one thing it dores, is provide a pretty safe place to meet and conduct trades

many of the yahoo sites offer more action, but im quite sure much of the action--you dont need

Trading sites: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91881&highlight=tape+trading

As for the yahoo groups, there are behind-the-scenes issues that most are not aware of. I will speak briefly about the 3 largest yahoo trading groups:

http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/tv-show-tape-trade/ - the owner abandoned it long ago. There is never a moderator, never a post deleted, or member banned = excellent place where scammers infest the place, though there are decent members that post there.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vid-for-trade/ - I quit moderating there because of lack of control of the moderators (i.e. scammers KNOW one of the moderators and are allowed to propogate). Of the five moderators at this group, two are absolutely excellent, but neither are all-knowing or have absolute authority there. When moderators disagree, deletions of posts and/or members are often hotly argued in private between moderators, siding with the scammer when moderators don't agree.

http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/videotape-trading/ - This is probably the safest yahoo group and has been around the longest. We have three moderators there, and it is run fairly. When scammers are brought to the moderators' attention outside of that group, they are banned pronto, before problems occur. The moderators keep aware of the scammers cropping up on-line, and have a zero tolerance for scammers when there is abundant proof.

Completely disagree. Maybe on newer shows, but 100% of the older shows are available b/c of offline collectors (who may now be online in today's age) were "smart" enough to record these shows as they occurred or in early syndication. AND all of the 1950s stuff came from 16mm film stock or in later days, some small cable stations have shown it (Good TV - The Lone Wolf).

For instance, I can guarantee where the last Redd Foxx sitcom, Royal Family, came from b/c the 4 dvd set that is out there I made from copies obtained from a collector who is old school vhs and recorded them as they were shown in 1991, they did not come from complete market saturation of the alt.video.tape.trading world or the ioffer bootleg sales site.

This site is probably the safest of all of the trade sites, however it still has issues of disagreement that mainly center on scammers or sellers.

One thing that I think we do not do well as a group is cross refer folks to good traders who have sets that we do not. That is a great way to build a trading network. You never know when that person might find something you are looking for on someone's list.

I'd have to agree this site is one of the best and safest.

One thing that I think we do not do well as a group is cross refer folks to good traders who have sets that we do not.

As a fairly new participant of this group, I'd like to add something here. I know I'll get raked over the coals for this & blacklisted on some folk's trading lists, but here goes...There are some (I repeat SOME) members (and they are in the minority) who seem to be a bit cliquish. It's an oft repeated mantra around here that when dealing with a new trader, to do small trades. Yet, being a new trader around here, I've been told more than once, that "small trades are too much trouble" (????), eventhough I had several things on their 'want' list. But at least they responded. There's one member who never responded to my multiple emails or multiple posts here - eventhough they've posted alot here since then. And I was responding to their offer of 'open to trades'. (shrug) I realize we're all free to trade however & with whomever we want, so it's no big deal. (Do I need a Tic Tac?) ;)

But I appreciate those who have been gracious enough to respond & to trade with me. They have been wonderful & have allowed me to augment my collection, as I hope I've been able to do for them. Thank you to them!

i cant answer for anyone else, and thats their business anyhow

but for me, a small trade and a large trade, cost the exact same amount of postage

i can ship up to about 65 discs for $ 4.30 via priority mail, the same price as i can ship 6 discs

thats why i dont do small trades

its just too $$$ to handle

ill trade any number with a new person to the board

20 , 40, 60, you name it

i dont limit new folks

but i insist that new folks do ship first,

i have been robbed far too many times, its the advantage of being around a while, and makeing a number of trades

i have lost--being conservative--at least 500 discs in the process to prove my worth as a trader

once one gets established, it will not take a new person long either, we were all new at one time

and i also needed to send first until i was proven

even though i was proven other places, i wasnt proven here

so redwine56, if you would like to drop me a trade list, i would be honored to look it over

S.O trading is the safest but you can find more RARE shows on that tradind site than this one. How do u think I recieved those gems?-lol What I'm trying to say is, your requests are seen by more traders than it would be on here. LikeI said, 85% of the rare shows collectioncame from posting on that site.

You have badmouthed this site both here and in yahoo groups I belong to. If you don't like it, move on. Jumping down innocent people's throats will not make friends, and you'd get more trades here if you used a bit more honey in your posts instead of mostly vinegar.

Loren, I don't object to sending first and have done so many times. Thank you for the offer, but we've attempted to negotiate trades a couple of times in the past. Both times, I only had ~2 discs worth of shows you wanted. Thanks anyway.

I've made a lot of huge trades like that, and I have not yet been disappointed. Of course, I usually stick with a select few regular traders when dealing with trades that large.

I did have one guy from out of the blue send me 100 DVDs, and he told me "that's the way I work". The discs were great, so I reciprocated with what I'd promised, without missing a beat.

Sifting through a huge set of discs in a trade with someone I've never dealt with before is a huge task and/or receiving a pile of boxes on the same day from different traders where all of the discs need to be checked sometimes seems like a full time job.

I agree. The largest trade I've done was only ~50 discs & it started out as 28. :) We kept adding things & it just got huge (to me!) I wasn't too worried as the trader had glowing feedback here, but I got pretty harried making sure I had included everything I was supposed to send. Now that it's over & done with, I'm glad I did it, as I have acquired four seasons of Mission Impossible (YAY!) in one fell swoop. But I really prefer to do more frequent, smaller trades. And like Jen said, it's a bit overwhelming to me, to have too many trades going on at the same time, so I try to keep it to 2-3 at the most. Otherwise, the trading tends to take over my life & other things, like work, housework & laundry get neglected. :D

I'm really impressed that yall collect TV shows because u don;t normally run into females who have that type of hobby. It would be wonderful to meet a women who collected tv shows but I don;t expect it. I will never forget when I was web surfuring and I came across a trading site where the husband had his trading page and so did his wife. I thought that was a beautiful thing. Females in Philly don;t watch TV-lol

It's the other way around at our house. My husband thinks TV watching is a waste of time, but I rarely hear him complain when I've picked up something especially for him. Gotta keep the hubby happy so he won't throw out my DVDs.

and had to reply. loren have you heard of 1st class mail or media mail. i usually use 1st class mail or media mail with delivery confirmation for small trades. i only use priority mail when it is more reasonable to do so. i think it is difficult to do alot of trades if you only do large trades. thanks

loren
10-18-2005, 10:32 PM
if you choose to use first class and media, thats very nice

i will not

i need my stuff to get there

media can easily take 14 days, i cant operate that way

and for first class, the difference in handling has taught me to go priority

one more consideration is that you need to add the cost of packageing materials to your media and first class fees

all mine are 100% free

free labels

free packageing tape

free mailers

and of course the time i save by not needing to dig in the trash and build boxes

i can get a package ready to ship in about 1 minute flat

like i said--for me

its priority every time

i need to know that what i promise will arrive and in a reasonable amount of time, and in a reasonable condition

as far as the next trader goes, make your own methods

nothing in the world impresses another trader like makeing a swap and getting their items in a couple days, thats how to build a long term relationship

yes ill pass on small trades, just as many of youall pass on the big ones that i prefer

find your nitche and do that ---but do it well no matter what it is

Lamont
10-18-2005, 11:27 PM
I agree
its not worth saving 2 or 3 dollars and make someone wait for 2 weeks, PLUS i have found that media tends to get damaged or lost in higher % than priority mail

i only ship media or 1st class if it is going to the same state or like a bordering state, where it wont slow it down at all

otherwise, i want the stuff to get there
