View Full Version : My brother just called me...

My brother works for Trader Joe's. For those who don't know, Trader Joe's is a speciality grocery store...they sell a lot of natural and organic products under their own label. The chain started in California almost 50 years ago.

My brother just called me from work. He was holding back tears, and told me that one of his co-workers who was working the night shift was crushed to death at about 4 this morning. A delivery truck was backing into the loading dock and was having trouble and stopped. For some unknown reason, the employee went in between the truck and the loading dock. The driver didn't know it, and backed right into him.

I didn't know the guy who died. This isn't a condolence thread. I'm just in total shock. The poor guy was 34, and my brother said he was the nicest guy going. I just feel so bad. I burst into tears when my brother told me. He said they have counselors coming in for employees and some big safety organization, OSHA, is there investigating what happened.

I'm trying to get a handle on why I feel so utterly sad over someone I never met. When my brother called me, he was at the store and couldn't talk much, but when I cried, he told me that he'd call me later because he, "can't cry now". His voice was so sad. He's worked with the man for four years.

I also keep thinking that it could have been my brother that it happened to.

That's a shame. I used to work part time as a shipping clerk and loaded/unloaded trucks all the time. You really have to be careful around those loading docks. I would have never jumped down into it with a truck there. Makes you wonder what that guy was thinking. I understand the shock of it all too. When I was in HS the neighbor guy down the street was working for some construction outfit and a wall fell on him and crushed him to death. He was only about 27 I believe.

It's totally normal for you to feel sad. It means you have a big heart and have compassion for your fellow man. That truly is a sad story.

Wow, that's really heartbreaking

It's normal to feel sad, I mean think about all the times, I know this has happened to me, that you read some heartbreaking story in the newspaper or on the internet and you find yourself crying for the people you don't even know. It's perfectly normal in my opinion.

Hanover grocery worker crushed by truck; Pembroke man fondly recalled as caring, giving

By DAN DeLEO
The Patriot Ledger

HANOVER - A 42-year-old grocery worker was struck and killed by a delivery truck at Hanover Mall.

William Winters of Pembroke was waiting to unload a trailer-truck at Trader Joe's early Sunday when the accident occurred.

Winters was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he was pronounced dead.

Police Lt. Walter Sweeney said Winters was crushed between the truck and the loading dock.

The driver, Hernan Rivera, 40, of Lynn, has not been charged.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and state and local police are investigating.

Winters graduated in 1981 from Silver Lake Regional High School and in 1986 from Stonehill College in Easton, where he majored in economics.

His father died of a heart attack when Winters was 15.

After college, he felt it was important to live at home to help care for his mother, who didn't drive.

Kerttu Winters is now 83.

‘‘He was a wonderful son,'' she said yesterday.

Former Patriot Ledger employee Ellen Galambos, a close friend of Winters, recalled a shy, reserved, handsome man who attracted friends of all kinds with his wit and kindness.

‘‘He took a long time to get to know, but once you got to know him, he was extremely funny, sometimes even silly,'' said Galambos. ‘‘He was just a very true, honest, good person.''

Galambos said Winters paired a voracious appetite for books with eclectic tastes.

One week, he'd be reading about Buddhist philosophy and the next about MiG fighters.

He loved to travel and spent hours online seeking new, exotic places to visit. He had been to Finland, his family's homeland, several times and to Belize in Central America.

Winters was also an avid golfer who played on his high school team and continued his love for the sport as an adult. He played about twice a week.

His golf buddies paid their respects to Kerttu Winters nearly all day long yesterday, she said.

I'm very familiar about Trader Joe's and my parents buy a lot of stuff from a couple of locations.

I feel really bad about the loss even though you never met the person who was in that horrific accident, it felt like you knew him as well and his loss will have a tremendous impact on those who worked at that location. You have the support of all of us here, Janice and for your brother.

 ohno: :crying:

It should be mandatory for every car and truck to have a sounding device when it's backing up.

The poor guy was young. So sad...

Absolutely! Forgot to mention that. A series of 'beeps' reminds individuals who are behind vehicles to get out of the way. Should be a law everywhere in the U.S. If you don't have a signaling device on your vehicle, a penalty should be imposed whatever it may be. No matter if the device is large or small but anything to alert individuals who are not inside cars, trucks or other vehicles. Had a sounding device placed in that truck the person working at that store would have been alive today. It makes me sad to hear or read in some reports that parents accidentally back their cars up not knowing a baby's at the back of the vehicle getting hit and/or killed.
