That's really hard to say because I liked them both in different ways.I liked the simple charm(and the attractive girls)of Petticoat Junction, but I also liked the Screwball Comedy on Green Acres.

They worked together visiting each other. It is a shame some jerk at CBS canceled them in an anti -rural move. America needs these kind of shows

 Green Acres is my favorite between the two. The Humor bore a great parody to the times. Life really can be as simple as that depicted in the show. I would find that if the humor existed also that it would make current world affairs seem surreal.

I would have to pick Petticoat Juncion that is one of my favorite shows and I enjoyed watching it on TV-Land before.

Although Green Acres was funnier, I still have to put PJ as the best of the 2. It was just an anachronistic setting in which simplicity and loyalty always won out over threats from outsiders/ 'city slickers.' G A was much more surreal and mocked everything as could be done in the confines of pre-1970's television. They were both good in their own way. I think the worst things about both of them was that the main comic playing off the 'straight' character was overdone... Uncle Joe was too lazy and selfish and Lisa Douglas was too scatterbrained.

Green Acres - it had a warped sense of humor and so do I.

"Petticoat Junction" is my favorite one. It was more saner and more down to earth. When it was on the air, if I had a bad day I can count on the show to cheer me up. :)

Me too by far. I LOVED Petticoat Junction and esp. Bea Benaderet. Bea (God rest her soul) did a MAGNIFICENT job as Kate. IMO, the series really seemed to fall apart after her passing. I never really cared for Green Acres - I'd watch it as a kid - but now - if someone gave me the entire GA series, I'd trade it in a minute for 5 eps of Petticoat Junction. I really wished PJ would start to get released in Seasons the way other sitcoms have.

Petticoat Juntion. Green Acres was fun in the beginning, but too corny after awhile. The county agent drove me crazy as he did Oliver. Loved the character of Sam Drucker on both shows, I think that goes way back to when he was on Ozzie and Harriet.

I'll go with Green Acres, although I agree Green Acres started losing steam in it's later seasons. Perhaps that's why those final three seasons have yet to be issued on DVD. Green Acres is more farcial, more of a laugh out loud type of show. Petticoat Junction is a bit more subdued, more cerebral. It's like comparing Bewitched with I Dream Of Jeannie, or The Addams Family with The Munsters. All these shows have merit, each has qualities that separate it from the other. It all comes down to what each individual prefers.

CBS cut ties with these rural sitcoms after the 1970-71 season. They could have let them run another season (71-72) but basically they ended em at the right time. As the 70's came in, things were changing and more socially themed shows like All In The Family started hitting the airwaves.

Green Acres was a slapstick show and I thought Petticoat Junction was more like a warm, fuzzy family sitcom. I think Green Acres was funny for a few years and then it just got dumb. Petticoat Junction had a lot of heart, but I think it should have ended when Bea Benaderet died. She really was the glue on that show. I venture to say "The Beverly Hillbillies" ran too long, too, by about three years. When they started going to England & Central Park, you knew the show was over.

I totally agree with you about The Beverly Hillbillies. The first few years were so funny and I couldn't wait for it to come on each week. I don't even remember the last few years at all. I probably didn't watch any of them.

Petticoat Junction all the way! :D I watched GA as a kid, but when trying to watch most recently when it was on ION or TV Land, I found myself becoming very impatient with it. Now CBS just needs to get on the ball and just RELEASE THE SERIES ON DVD!!!

The "Jo's" were all pretty to be sure, but Kate was just such a lovely (and classy) woman. Integrity with a capital I. Looking back, the show should have written a beaux in for her - I could definitely see a late 50-60 ish guy just falling for her.

I agree. I could see Kate marry Sam Drucker. They would have made a great couple. :)

ok, I was just writing from my childhood viewpoint on having a big crush on Linda Kaye Henning

You don't need to sell me on the charms of Bea Benederet.....I adored her on "Burns & Allen" :)

She was indeed fabu as Blanche. But what was really amazing about Bea was the many voice-overs she did. She was the voice of Betty Rubble and many of the female characters on cartoons by Warner Brothers and the like. She was Lucy's first pick as Ethel - truly just an amazing artist

I am biased to Green Acres only because I saw most (if not all) episodes back in the 90s when they aired on Nickelodeon. Petticoat Junction was a non-entity to me; I think I've only seen two episodes ever. I had never heard of it until my mother watched some of the early Green Acres episodes with me and saw the many crossovers from Petticoat Junction. It was one of her favorite shows growing up in the 1960s (born in 1950).
Seems like after maybe Green Acres' second season, it and Petticoat Junction ignored each other almost completely outside the characters who were in both shows. I don't remember seeing many PJ-only characters on GA after the early episodes.

I like them both, but it is almost as if Green Acres was in the Hooterville of an alternate universe from Petticoat Junction. They had things in common, but the sensibilities of the two shows were very different.
Green Acres has always been one of my top 5 or 10 shows. I disagree that it got worse as the series went on (outside of those pilot episodes for other shows, which, in my opinion, don't really count). Very funny show, in my opinion. I like the absurdity of it and the casting, writing, and directing were perfect for that sort of show.
Junction is also a great show, particularly in the first 3 or 4 seasons. It has a more straightforward type of humor and storytelling. I always enjoy watching it.

There was so much crossover activity -- Sam, Uncle Joe, Kate, Fred Ziffel, Newt Kiley, Eb Dawson, Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting -- all appeared on both series. The girls borrowed from Lisa's fabulous wardrobe. For that reason, I tend to see both shows as solidly part of the Hooterville community.

It's interesting to see Fred Ziffel in Season 1 of PJ -- his character is established as a hog farmer long before Arnold's creation.

YES!!! I happened to be up early one morning not too long ago and put on PJ, and an ep. with Fred Ziffel was on! He was tending to 3 little brown pigs, none were named Arnold! And she wasn't in the ep, but he was talking about Mrs. Ziffel . But her name wasn't Doris, he was referring to her as Ruth! :)

It's a tough call to choose between these 2 shows. I adore them both very much but if I had to choose just one, I'd pick Green Acres.

Really, you can't compare the two shows because they are so different. Green Acres is more of a slapstick comedy and Petticoat Junction is a straight-laced comedy. Both are great. Truly two of the best shows TV has ever offered.

I own the complete series of both shows on "homemade sets" but it's not the same as official sets....I want official sets!

I see here that only three seasons of Petticoat Junction have been released, out of what, at least twice as many more seasons?

How many seasons of Green Acres are currently available on DVD?

Petticoat Junction was MUCH better than Green Acres. I traded off my GA seasons 3 and 4 because the "slapstick" was more of a slap in the face. O.W. Douglass could not walk into the General Store, and greet, without some irrelevent retorts. Seasons 1 and 2 had a bit of this defect, but they provided some color into the Hooterville environment.

OF TOPIC WARNING: I would like to see Seasons 4 and later of PJ, seasons 5 and later of Beverly Hillbillies, and some other shows, before I fall of the twig.

Having seen the black and white Petticoat Junctions again, I'll retract the above and say those seasons are genuinely funny.
The black-and-white episodes of PJ are much better than the color seasons but they're still all fun to watch.

I like but don't absolutely love the last few seasons of the show because of all the singing.

I like both although my favorite of the two would be Green Acres. I like what I've seen of Petticoat Junction but I really haven't watched it that much. I wish Decades would give it a binge marathon.

While I like and enjoy both shows, they are both different types of shows. Green A. is more surreal, ridiculous, off beat, strange, crazy sort of bizarro humor. While P. Junction is more the traditional family style gentle and kindly humor, not mean or insulting the way G.A. could sometimes get.:talk:

You have to admit though that in the final season of Petticoat Junction, Uncle Joe was pretty mean to Orrin Pike (Bobbie Jo's boyfriend, Season 7, 1969-70).

The thing that's a little frustrating is that one more season of PJ may have had some significant events: the marriage of Bobbie & Orrin, and possibly a wedding for Billie Jo (Meredith MacRae's real-life husband, Greg Mullavey, had appeared). But the series was canned (ending a full season before GA).

I like both shows -- I watch Green Acres for the wackiness, and PJ for several reasons -- not the least of which is the ladies.:)

I feel like it's silly to choose between the two, but when I was a kid I hated Petticoat Junction for whatever reason, so I'm going to give the nod to Green Acres just because of that. I liked it as a kid and now, I always appreciated its surreal zaniness.

When I got older I watched all the Petticoat Junction shows in reruns and learned to appreciate it. I'm not sure why I disliked it so much when I was younger.
