View Full Version : Who agrees that penny was too young to be insulting Bookman?
TVFactFan 09-19-2005, 10:38 AM It just seemed so dumb to have a child disrespecting a grown man. I think this is where Willona didn't do a good job as a mother because she shouldn;t have been insulting bookman in front of Penny. So i guess Penny felt it was ok to insult him too. They should have never had the Penny character insulting an adult.
Brian Damage 09-19-2005, 10:39 AM I agree with that.
TVFactFan 09-19-2005, 10:49 AM And my problem with this has nothing to do with me liking the Bookman character more than Penny-lol
nerrad 09-19-2005, 01:15 PM true true.
GeorgiaboyJeff! 09-19-2005, 02:58 PM Good point! Penny was a minor & Bookman was an adult. It's common courtesy to respect him. But none of the Evans or Willona set a good example, so Penny felt it was alright to disrespect him too.Although I thought it was stupid & immature of the adults to make fun of him anyway.. I never thought the fat jokes were funny.

No the fat jokes weren't funny, just Willona's name for Bookman-"BOOGER"
Dwaynew 09-19-2005, 09:34 PM In season 5 there was too much poking fun at bookman.

I agree.....Michael and Thelma were especially out of line!!!
GeeBee 09-20-2005, 06:58 PM Well, in the earlier episodes, Bookman was often a real jerk to the Evans family and often gave them a bum deal. In the later episodes, he seemed to become nicer and his human side was revealed with his concern about Penny's adoption (although his way of helping was VERY dumb), but the insults on Bookman seemed to continue anyway. They probably wouldn't have known what to do with his character if he wasn't the target of insults. I guess they could have always had him divorce his wife and marry Florida.

I agree with you up until the marrying Florida part LOL.
But when Penny would insult Bookman atleast most of the time she was so sweet and nice about it calling him Mr. Buffalo Butt.

That just showed Willona did a poor Job in raising Penny

In that aspect, yes.
Living In a '70's Dream 09-20-2005, 10:07 PM Personally, I wished that Bookman would had spanked Penny's butt for treating him poorly. No, I agree, Willona and the rest of the adults did not set a good example by making fun of Bookman (like it was okay to tease someone)...Seeing Penny being rude and disrespectful towards Bookman or any adult to me is not remotely funny...

Penny was an abused child. I think she got enough beatings to last a lifetime. If some adult would have just told Penny to stop, I'm sure she would have. The simple fact is that none of the adults saw anything wrong with it. And maybe Bookman did have it coming somewhat, considering all the rotten things he did to the family in earlier episodes.

I mentioning about how Bookman should spanked Penny was out of line; but...regardless if Penny was an abused child or not, she should had better guidelines when it came to respecting her elders. Willona seemed indifferent on how Penny interacted with adults, and to me that showed that she (though she did give Penny a lot of love) was "maybe" a little too lenient with her child's behavior. As for asking Penny to "stop" certain behavior traits, unfortunately it was never dsiplayed on any episode of Good Times. Maybe the writers thought it was "cute" for Penny to behave as a brat..
Brieannas21 09-20-2005, 11:09 PM It wasn't Penny's fault at all and I really don't see the big deal in it. You have to give respect in order to get respect. Bookman wasn't a great man at all, he would put them out on the street knowing how hard of a time they were having after James died.
Also Willona did a great job with Penny, just because Penny made a few comments about a man doesn't mean that Willona was a bad mother.

Also Willona did a great job with Penny, just because Penny made a few comments about a man doesn't mean that Willona was a bad mother. I thought that Willona was a very loving mother. I mean, here is a single woman raising a child on her own, so maybe my last comment I was being too harsh. But what I am trying to say that I do not find it entertaining seeing children, if they are Penny or any other television character acting on as such; as far as Bookman, no he was not a great person, but that still does give a child the right to respond to an adult that way!
GeorgeWBushGOP 09-21-2005, 01:38 PM Maybe Bookman should have given Penny "the whoop ass " look.
SHe sure was secure for a beaten child.
Ireneparalegal 09-21-2005, 01:57 PM the writers just seemed to use the Bookman character as their dart game...throw darts at the fat man and see the audience laugh...so be it he was a jerk, the writers made him out that way, but then to have them constantly put him down, what example are they setting not only for the Penny character, but to the tv audience as well?

I just thought about it, Michael did the same thing when he was Penny's age-lol Calling Bookman Mr. buffalo

I guess it was the ol' rehash game at GT. can't think of new ways to handle these characters, so we got to make the new ones versions of the old ones.
