View Full Version : SOUL TRAIN - With Don Cornelius
Ireneparalegal 09-17-2005, 06:12 PM Don't know if this is the proper place for this thread but I was in a "hard to find records" store today ordering old school stuff and there was a Soul Train compilation CD with songs from artists who performed on that show.
For those who actually were around in the 70's, did you watch SOUL TRAIN?
I loved it. I watched it every Saturday. It was nothing like it is now.
It was DA BOMB!!!!!! AWESOME!! FUNKY!!! HOT!!!
I miss Don Cornelius. I miss watching the original Soul Train dance line. I remember dancing to all the songs. That was one of the best things about Saturdays. I had ballet classes to go to that day but made sure I was back home by the time the show was on.
I hear that song by MFSB who were responsible for the tv's famous theme song. I have that song on my computer player and also on some burned CD's.
Who else has memories of this awesome funky show???

I started watching it in the late 80's. I was able to find 2 eps of Soul Train 5 months ago from 1972 and 1975. One ep has Michael Jackson doing the classic "ROBOT DANCE" and the other one has Ralph Carter from Good Times singing-"When You're Young and in Love"-lol
ShawnieMac 10-13-2005, 03:59 PM I haven't watched an entire epsiode of Soul Train since Don Corneilus stepped down as host, around 1994 or 1995. That was when I really discovered the artists' live performances were lip-synced. I prefer the real thing, I would feel kinda cheated that the live performances weren't actually 100% live. Even since he stepped down, I pretty much interest in that show, I'll a couple of minutes every know and then.

I have lost track on who the host is-lol
Ireneparalegal 10-13-2005, 04:55 PM i can't tell you, ever since Don left, it's not the same for me.
musicradio77 10-15-2005, 12:25 AM Speaking of the show, I went to a yard sale and I bought a record called "Soul Train: Hits That Made It Happen", a collection of 70's soul classics like "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield, "Back Stabbers" by the O'Jays, "Everybody Plays the Fool" by the Main Ingredient, "The Good Foot" by James Brown, "Me & Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul and so much more. The record is in fair condition and it has a couple of scratches. This was from 1973 on the Adam VIII label. You should check it out.

One of my faves is William DeVaughn's "Be thankful for what you got"
"Diamond in the back, sunroof top, digging the scene with a gangsta lean, oooooh ooooh ooooh..."

Just watched the movie "Crooklyn", and at the end of the movie there is kind of a tribute to Soul Train and Don Cornelius. The whole ending shows scenes from the 70's edition of Soul Train when they had the two Soul Train lines where both the men and women danced together.
Soul Train is really no good any more. In its day it was really special.
Woolworth27 02-26-2006, 02:07 AM Soul Train Haven't been the same since Don Cournelus left in the mid 90's now they be having people on there you never heard of. The dancing sucks, they don't dance like the did back in the day. The people also don't have any since of fashion. Back in the day you had to know how to dance to get on Soul Train.
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/viacoms-bet-networks-acquires-soul-train-to-make-brand-cool-again-2016-04-04
The acquisition includes every Soul Train episode, but BET hopes to grow the brand founded by Don Cornelius.
Hawkee 04-05-2016, 01:47 AM My mother used to watch Soul Train sometimes when she was a teen and Soul Train was the show where my uncle actually heard Donna Summer's music for the first time and it truly was a cool show. Mom and I would watch Soul Train as well whenever they would announce the dances to the upcoming music cds that were hits in the 90's. There was also a line of Soul Train Barbie Dolls called Soul Train Shani {Shani was a doll who was also part of the Barbie line for those who are curious by the way** And even though Don Cornelius is no longer with us it's great to see BET air Soul Train reruns because this is truly a classic show that everyone can watch. Plus you can see singer Jody Watley and dancer Jeffrey Daniel {Who was married to singer Stephanie Mills for a short time** looking so awesome on Soul Train. I'm glad BET got Soul Train because it's truly a great show

The reason why the performances were lip-synched was because of economical and logistical purposes. Basically, it would've been much more expensive and complex to always allow live performances (especially for a first-run syndicated show).

I think Soul Train lost at lot of its luster so to speak once Don Cornelius stopped hosting (even though it miraculously, managed to survive a good 13 more years) in 1993, because none of the other people that followed (first it was a series of guest hosts, then Mystro Clark, then Shamar Moore, and finally, Dorian Gregory) could match Don's gravitas. Don Cornelius just had this presence about him (whether it was the smooth baritone voice, the effortless cool and sophistication, and the sharp suits) that gave Soul Train strong amount of credibility and class. Once Don was removed from the picture, Soul Train just became another urban music show (that really only thrived on its legacy more than anything else) that was no different than what you saw on BET or MTV during that era (e.g. Yo MTV Raps).
