View Full Version : Moonlighting Social Club on Shephard and Willis
marla 09-15-2005, 03:45 AM the social club just finished the first season of moonlighting and i'll write from my notes on that later.
i'm a bit surprised (i have no idea why) at the intensity of reaction over cybill shephard. hands down everyone truly loves her as maddie hayes. they think that she's beautiful, funny, sexy, charming, and a star. (the goal of the club is to see this as if it aired for the first time the evening the club watches it.)
bruce willis is liked, but not as much as cybill shepard, and in one of the discussions the club has, it was decided that that's because cybill Was the star then and the show showcased her. and the overwhelming view is that shepard is carrying willis.
according to the club, if they had seen moonlighting the night that it aired, and that time was now, bruce willis has some catching up to do and cybill shepard is going to be a huge star!
i can't wait until they see season two, when willis seems to relax into acting.
kismet 09-15-2005, 08:37 AM I have stated this before but I have to repeat it.
After watching most( I still haven't watched Atlas Belched) of the episodes repeatedly from seasons 1 and 2 on DVDs, I am blown away (again) by how fantastic Cybill was as Maddie Hayes. As you can hear on the commentaries, so was Glenn Caron.
Cybill was phenomenal, and deserved that Emmy.
She became overshadowed, I think, because Bruce was an upcoming star and everyone knew it - she was already an established star so most of the attention started to focus on him, and I think Glenn and the writers started to follow that trend as well as the show progressed to its final demise.
CYBILL SHEPHERD WAS MADDIE HAYES AND NO ONE ELSE COULD EVER BE THAT CHARACTER.
She made us laugh and cry and yell at the screen - she was simply terrific.
So was he, but that's another topic.
gypsygem81 09-15-2005, 01:31 PM Well said, Kis. I agree with everything you said. Cybill has always been my favourite out of the two, even though I love Bruce too. And I do think she was overshadowed by Bruce's up and coming rise to stardom. No one else could have played Maddie Hayes and the show would not be what it is without her.

ryangie97 09-15-2005, 01:59 PM I can't pick a favorite between the two. I just loved both characters and Bruce and Cybill were just perfect for the parts. You are right Kismet and Gem noone else could have played the part of Maddie Hayes. Same with David. Bruce was perfect for the part. I don't think the show would have been what it was without either one of them. They were so great together.
Dutchie 09-15-2005, 02:22 PM I don't know who I would have liked better if I saw the show the day it first aired. Truth is, I didn't even know Bruce Willis when I watched Moonlighting for the first time (about 3 years ago). Okay, I saw him in Mad About You once, so I knew his face, and when I saw him on screen I kept watching because I was wondering what he was like. And then I saw Cybbie! I knew her from a movie as well, and I liked her character Maddie Hayes soooo much!! She did it so well (Bruce too). I like Cybill her personality, I think that's the reason why I like her better than Bruce.

marla 09-16-2005, 02:39 AM shephErd, not shephArd!
now i'm wondering if i spell willis right.
Tazmania 09-17-2005, 04:27 PM Ouch! Glad you corrected that!
I agree on what you guys say. Cyb is sooooo good playing Maddie.
Bruce was one word for me.... ATTRACTION!
I really started to like his part in Season 2.
The he became a REAL man. Although he never lost his boyish touch....
Maddie moved me more because of the emotion that Cyb threw in her part.
And this was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen on TV.
I feel blessed that I have seen them both in real life!

caitybelle 09-18-2005, 12:03 AM While on the subject, you know what else is funny to me, especially now, as an adult, is how much more I identify with the truth of Maddie -- she's usually right, you know? Most of her points in their arguments I totally agree with. THough I agree with his, too, sometimes at the same time, so I guess that makes me Cyb with an "S".
And I think you guys are right in that Bruce "the actor" got to blossom at Cyb's expense. She was much looser and funnier in earlier seasons, and got more serious as time went on. Granted, anyone would have to be, given the direction of the stories, but some of my favorite Maddie moments are ones from 1st and 2nd season where she is just balls out silly -- my all time fav, methinks, being her chewing gum and looking at him blankly during the steakout in season 1. GENIUS. i think i've said that in here b/f, but i do love it. and I think lots of that is her personal joy as an actress at finding this fab part and great chemistry with her co-star.
Then, drama, drama, drama, of course. Personal and otherwise. Anyone here read her book? I'm sure you have, dumb Q. But as juvenile as it is, does anyone wonder if the course of the show would have shifted if the La-z-boy thing played out different? I sure do. Maybe they'd have, like, smiled more or something in subsequent seasons. I don't know. But then, it suprised me that nothing more happened btw. them, b/c I always felt like they were lovers gone bad and let that leak into the show a bit. But then, I was 13 at the time and read romance into everything.
THOUGH I MUST SAY, i am recently vindicated by the tangental news that Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas got it on during Romancing the Stone. That made me feel slightly less purile and silly. Check one for the cheap sentamentalist seats.
I don't mean to doubt Cybill, and we know Bruce isn't talking, but I've never completely believed the official version of their off screen relationship. I agree that they started to act more like scorned lovers than warring co-stars.
(I also LOVE Romancing the Stone so that news was interesting to me too! They also had amazing chemistry and now we know why!! )

Ditto.
I didn't believe a word about the La-z-Boy story. Never did, never will.
Kathleen and Michael finally confessed -- good to hear that news.
Plus, has anyone else noticed that the time frame has now changed concerning their date - it has now moved up to early first season - I think it was later on in her book.
I always thought they were really mad at each other during Atomic Shakespeare time. Next thing you know, Cy is pregnant.
Tazmania 09-18-2005, 02:18 PM So do we believe they DID have a fling or not??
kismet 09-18-2005, 05:56 PM I know I definitely believe the La-z-boy story was a load of %$#@. Let's see - Cybill, one of the most sexual/sensual women in the world, doesn't go through with it because it wouldn't be right. Uh huh. Yeah right!
I truly believe they loved, hated, lusted, fought, kissed and spat their way through Moonlighting. He knew how to push her buttons and she knew how to push his. I could go on and on but I don't want to be the only one who gives their opinion.
I wish I had my own website so I could put all my ML/BW/CS thoughts down - believe me, there's lots.
marla 09-19-2005, 07:39 AM i think that some of the most intense, frustrating, passionate love affairs i've had were with men i didn't even kiss.
the timing was off, we worked together and it would have made working too hard, one of us was already involved, any number of reasons.
but, boy, let me tell you, unsatified love makes for such intense feelings of hate/love on both of the persons parts.
it is really hell on earth. for both. something you don't want to revisit.
caitybelle 09-19-2005, 10:00 AM I always felt like the way she told the story in the book (and good call on the discrepancies -- I noticed that too) was not the whole story. And it seems strange that she'd not be more insulted by the outcome in the way she tells it, you know? I mean, someone who to that point had been fairly aggressive about getting the men she wanted (and SHOUT OUT TO YOU SISTA!) suddenly not getting him? I mean, I know I'd be ticked.
Which, on the flip side, does lend the thing some credibility, I must admit. Maria is right on that point -- sometimes its worse when its stymied.
BSDDomi 09-19-2005, 01:29 PM I wish I had my own website so I could put all my ML/BW/CS thoughts down - believe me, there's lots.
So why don't you start one, kismet, would love to read your thoughts :D
I have no idea what you guys are talking about since I never read Cybill's book but maybe a kind soul could quote the part from the book for me so I can tell you what I think.

Ok - here comes some of it:
“It did not escape me that the growing attraction between Maddie & David mirrored what was developing between the actors who portrayed them. After one particularly heated rehearsal, I walked off the set with him and said, “Are we going to do something about this or what?” He looked startled but not unpleasantly so, and then squinted his familiar half-smile. “Why don't I come over to your place tonight?” There was a bottle of Gentleman Jim in his hand when he knocked on the door of my apartment, and it wasn't long before we were passionately sucking face. “Maybe we shouldn't do this,” I said, feeling ambivalent and aware of the potential complications. “We might be working together a long time.” But we were quickly too far gone in a lusty missionary embrace, leaning half-way back on a La-z-boy lounger that tilted almost to the point of toppling over. Suddenly he stopped, arched his back, and looked at me with the lines creasing his forehead. “Maybe you're right,” he said, gripping the wide arm of the chair for support as he pushed off and stood up. Rearranging himself as well as his remaining clothes, he announced, “I think I'll go to the bathroom.” When he returned, he picked his jacket up from the floor where it had landed, mumbled something about getting a good night's sleep and was gone. Maybe Bruce liked the chase better than the catch. Maybe he preferred the character to the real woman. We never did finish what we started in private, but anytime we had a kissing scene, he stuck a big camel tougue halfway down my throat.”
And there you go.
gypsygem81 09-20-2005, 02:48 AM I've always wondered what scene they had just done. I can't remember, does she make any mention of what season this happened during? To be honest, if she is not telling the truth about this - what is her motivation for lying? To protect Bruce? Why? She isn't too worried about protecting the other men she mentions.
Personally, I'm finding it difficult to imagine the words 'maybe we shouldn't do this' coming out of Cybill's mouth!
thanks for taking the time to post this Caitybell. Makes me want to read Cybill's book again.
Did anyone see Cybill on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson? She was supposedly there to promote the new Martha movie, but the first question was about Elvis and the second one was about Bruce. She gave her standard answer that they "almost" did it. She said first Bruce said yes and she said no, then later she said yes and he said no. Craig said, "Bruce said no??" He looked skeptical.
kismet 09-20-2005, 11:12 AM Dang it! I missed it. Did you tape it, CyBr? I'm so angry that she doesn't promote her appearances on her site. All I knew about this week is that she is supposed to be on Tony Danza this Friday.
What did she look like? Give us the skinny.

"Bruce said no??" He looked skeptical. -- Uh Yup.
Cybill said NO? I look skeptical. -- most definitely.
Sorry, I didn't get a chance to tape it. I wish I had! I was just flipping channels and happened to catch it. I'm usually not even up that late.
Darn i missed her on the Insider and now The Late Late Show. I was probably up watching Moonlight then too. WHat Friday is she on Tony Danza? I thought it was last friday and she wasn't on,is it this Friday? I tried to pull up his website but it wouldn't work for me. I wish there was a place to check who will be on what talk shows each week cause i always seem to miss Bruce also whenever he is on the talk show curcuit.
kismet 09-20-2005, 02:40 PM I think she is scheduled for this Friday. My info came from Google, not his officlal site, so I hope it is correct.
kismet 09-20-2005, 02:44 PM She is scheduled to appear this Friday. She will be on Tony Danza along with Larry King.

gypsygem81 09-20-2005, 02:44 PM Well, I haven't a clue who he is, but on his site Cybill is listed on Friday 23rd. http://tvplex.go.com/buenavista/tonydanza/index.html
I hope someone's going to fill the rest of us in!

kismet 09-20-2005, 02:49 PM Gem - Tony Danza is an actor who now has a talk show.
He was on Taxi (the fighter), and Who's The Boss (the male housekeeper).
He's a pretty talented guy IMO - he can act, sing and tap dance - he seems to be a very loyal guy who is willing to go out on a limb to help people. He is a close friend (and supporter) of Liza Minnelli, who needs all the friends she can get.
Cybill was on his talk show last year and intimidated the heck out of him. It was funny.
Hey guys thanks for the info! I will be watching on Friday to see if she is on and will report back on what she says.
gypsygem81 09-20-2005, 04:08 PM I just read a small thing on some bloc critics site (http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/09/20/070809.php) about her interview on the Late Late Show:
Your first guest of the night was Cybill Shepherd. I'm not sure what to think about her anymore. I don't know why. I used to love her. Moonlighting was one of my favorite programs back in the day. I never saw her eponymous sitcom. By the time that came out, she had already lost her appeal to me. Sometimes I like her, sometimes I don't. Anyhow, you had me giggling over Cybill’s history with Elvis. I always forget that she dated him.
"Was he a good kisser?" Only you could ask something like that. How is it that you get away with asking female guests questions about whether or not their leading men are hairy and still come across as devastatingly hetero? I'm not complaining. I think it's dead sexy! Plus, you said "lubricate".
I let out a big laugh at the Martha and Diddy rap clip. Even Cybill seemed to like it.

kismet 09-20-2005, 04:42 PM Hey Gem - great ML minds think alike.
I just posted something similar on Cyb's site - I made it smaller, and I didn't know how to do it as well as you did, but we do have "like ideas", don't you think?
gypsygem81 09-21-2005, 02:45 AM Absolutely Kis! I didn't think to post it on Cyb's site. Duh. Nice one.

MulberryGal 09-23-2005, 06:33 AM I really started to like his part in Season 2.

I've got to agree with you Taz, especially the bit about David/Bruce becoming a REAL man in Season 2. He did change and grow didn't he? By Season 3, he was super hot (and incidentally a much better actor too)
Gotta say too, no one else could have played Maddie Hayes like Cybill, with that same cool exterior and passion just under the surface. And no one could have played David Addison like Bruce, a real larger than life fun guy with that touch of arrogance and touch of real sensitivity and hurt. And together they were just special.

Sorry posting so late here but i did see Cybill on Tony Danza last week. She looked really good. She talked about MArtha the movie and that she is also dating again and talked about how hard it has always been to date the right guys over the years and how she used to not trust guys because she figured they only wanted to be with her cause she is a celebrity and not for who she is inside. She mentioned she is getting better at trusting and also has been cancer free for 4 years now. Nothing else was mentioned.
kismet 09-29-2005, 04:22 PM Thanks for the info on the Danza appearance - I missed it! They moved his show to another network/time in my area, and I was not aware of the change. I was sooooo mad at myself for not checking. I hope they will air a repeat of the show in the near future. What was she wearing? Did she intimidate him like she did last year? That was funny. He seemed uncomfortable with her, like he was afraid of her.
Did you see her appearance on The Late Late Show? I missed that one as well. I had no idea she was even scheduled for that one.
ryangie97 09-29-2005, 04:34 PM I missed it too. Thanks for posting the info. Rose :)
BSDDomi 10-02-2005, 02:46 AM Thanks, caitybelle. I wonder why they never finished it, they remind me too much of many TV couples, the writers tell them to go for it then let someone else walk in on them before anything happens and boom, the magic moment is gone..were they trying to do this..I mean you really should think about this when you work with someone but if you really want this, why stop it...read about the tongue sticking down her throat part back in the 80s.

To answer Kismet,
I don't remember what Cybill wore on Tony Danza last week but she did look terrific! I didn't see her on his show last time but he didn't seem intimidated by her this time. I missed her on the late show also. I always seem to miss them both on talk shows. Their websites show mention when they are going to be guests on talk shows.
kismet 10-03-2005, 08:21 AM I saw no mention on Cyb's site about any appearances on TV in September. The last one that I saw mentioned was her November 2004 appearance on The Jane Pauley Show!
I didn't know that she was scheduled for the CBS morning show either. I think she appeared Friday morning, but I'm not sure. I missed EVERY promotion appearance this time. I guess I should be happy that I saw Martha II. I almost missed it because my daughter wanted to see Desperate Housewives. Thank goodness Cy's telemovie was delayed because of the football games.
