View Full Version : It's "formerly," not "formally."
I apologize in advance. I know it's not polite to correct people's spelling and/or grammar on message boards, but this has been driving me absolutely crazy for no particularly good reason.
I've seen people include their old screen name(s) in their signatures, preceded by the word "formally." This would be fine if it was meant to signify what your formal name(s) is/are. ("Mr. Nelson, an artist formally known as Prince, is a great musician")
But unless I'm making wild assumptions, you actually want to let members know what your retired screen names were. In this case, the word you want is "formerly." (I was formerly known as Jennifer. Then I had this miraculous operation.")
Thank you.

Excuse me - are you insinuating that I don't care about the people in the Gulf Coast? Because if so, you're wrong. Very, very wrong.
I've spent time and energy helping to organize a benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims at work. I've donated nearly $200 of my own money. I've encouraged people to donate money. I've encouraged people to donate blood (I'd donate my own, but the Red Cross won't accept my diseased, heavily medicated blood). I've thought endlessly about these people, sad and distraught that there isn't more I can do for them. I've shed tears.
So please, don't tell me that because there is a horrible tragedy going on right now that I'm not allowed to talk about something else once in awhile.

No, no apology is necessary. You are right abt your thread, that's what these forums are all abt. I apologize for coming out the way I did. Sorry it made you think something. No hard feelings.

I completely agree.... I am the same way.... I've heard people say it with an "s." Same with the word "mine." I've heard people say something like, "It's mines" OR "mine's is." There is NO need to use the contraction form; otherwise it will be redundant. Example: Mine is is.... (sic)...

What about if you pronounce it and use the s so it sounds like a z?

Hey AKA, start a thread for people to teach others abt grammatical errors, spelling errors, etc.!!!! That would be sooooooo cool. I bet it would generate a large amount of posts!!!! This way, some could teach and others could learn!!! What do you think?????

i get slightly irked when people say 'who' when it should be 'whom', although not enough for me to correct them, but it drives me crazy when people say 'whom' when it should just be 'who'.
also when people say "there's" when it should be "there are". ie "there's not enough staplers." and i really hate the word 'gonna'. ugh i dont know why im so sensitive to verbal errors in grammar.

But we must remember, this is a message board and we are here to have fun. I have seen too many message boards go down hill because of the cliques, pointing out grammatical and spelling errors. As I type this I find myself trying to be perfect. It's because of my work. But I enjoy being free and being able to type "imperfectly". It's like being dressed up all day and finally coming home and throwing on some relaxing clothes. I don't mind these posts, but I suggested to AKA to make a thread abt it so we could post there rather than point things out on other threads.

Janice 09-08-2005, 11:18 AM I think this thread was a great idea. Since it's against the rules to correct another member's grammar, it's nice to have a place where we can say what bothers us.
"Yous guys" makes my ears bleed.
Also the misuse of the contractions, don't and doesn't is maddening.
She don't know what she's talking about.
Translation: She do not know what she's talking about.

oh, so it's against the rules to correct another's grammar. Interesting. What happens when one does that????

Yes, it is against the rules. What happens is probably a warning. If it becomes habitual and troublesome, probably a suspension. If a member is in constant violation on any board I moderate, I would confer with TJ to determine the course of action.

5. In addition, please Do NOT correct other users spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar. This isn't English class - as long as the point's in the message, mistakes here and there are ok. We do ask that, if possible, you refrain from typing in all-capital letters - many consider this a form of shouting, which is considered a rude behavior. Moderators have the right to edit posts containing all-capital letters at their discretion.

Thank u for your quick response. Is there a problem in typing in all caps in the title? I do that just as a habit.
Janice 09-08-2005, 11:46 AM Thank u for your quick response. Is there a problem in typing in all caps in the title? I do that just as a habit.
No that's fine. Even all caps in the post to make a strong point is okay. It's typing in mostly all caps, all the time, that is against the rules.

Thank you again for your quick response. Ok. Just wanted to make sure. i was "pointed out" by another poster for using all caps in my title. I was also chided for using alot of exclamation points in my posts. BTW, I do that in all my posts whether it's something funny or serious. When they chided me for using alot of !!!!!!!!, it was in regards to a funny post. What abt that may I ask?

Exclamation points are not against the rules.
Ireneparalegal 09-08-2005, 12:44 PM Exclamation points are not against the rules.
So, should I have been chided by another poster for NOT breaking the rules? Also, I was called the B-word more than once by a moderator. What happens in that instance? Can anyone be a moderator? Even a 16 year old? When a moderator calls a poster the B-word more than once on one post, isn't that grounds for suspension? Again, thanx for your response to my questions. Don't want to bug.

Add to that you're and your, and their, there, and they're. I've been known to type too fast and put the wrong one, but some people I honestly think have no idea which is the correct usage. I thought this was elementary English stuff.

that's been annoying me since the FIRST GRADE. that was when i learned the differences, and even since then, when i was six years old, i've hated it whenever people mix them up, especially the there's. i understand that sometimes people, including myself, mix up homonyms subconsciously (ie typing "write" when you meant to put "right" and not realizing it) but holy god i can't stand looking at papers written by high school students and seeing "there gonna park they're car over their" all over it. UGHHHHHHHHHH.
EmoJoe 09-08-2005, 06:12 PM Let's see. I always use "there, their, they're" incorrectly, I know the real version I just type the wrong version incorrectly, but that's basically it. And I forget to put appostophies (sp?) sometimes.

I wasn't trying to be mean, I was asking a question. Every time someone asks you a question doesnt mean they hate you and are ganging up on you.

Don't worry Irene - I tend to overuse the " ! " here too. I don't in "real life", but I tend to use the "odd" thing here - like "cuz" instead of "because" - more of an abbreviation than anything. Its when people use " i c u " (and not meaning the Intensive Care Unit) that drives me.
