View Full Version : Do you prefer to buy DVD's online or just go to the stores and buy them?
TVFactFan 08-25-2005, 11:17 AM It's makes more sense to me to buy it at the store. Especially when talking about NEW RELEASES. Why order a new release online when you can just but it at the store? I think that's lazy but that's just me. Now when it comes to Jeffersons season 1 which is no longer in the stores, that's when you are supposed to order online not when something is just released. Anyone prefer buying DVD's from the store?

Ordering online isn't lazy, it's convenient. Especially when certain stores won't stock certain less popular titles (like That's My Mama). But I prefer stores. One reason is that I get to see the package when I buy it. I ordered something online recently and the box was slightly creased. I prefer having everything in perfect condition, and you're taking a chance with online deliveries. Plus I like to have stuff the day it comes out.
TVFactFan 08-25-2005, 12:55 PM The most important factor for me is price. If it's cheaper online, I'll order it online. If it's cheaper in store, I'll buy it in store.
I just need to understand why some people pre-order DVD like there won';t be any left after it's release date. I'm not understanding the logic for pre ordering dvd's

I just bought Jeffersons season one instore at a Suncoast in the Manhattan Mall in NYC just the other day, so it is still available in stores. As long as follow-up releases follow the first, stores generally like stocking all the seasons together if they can to make profit, IMO.
Anyway, I cant order online unless my dad orders it for me, so I prefer storebought discs, although online is where the deals are. I want to get a Wal-mart gift card or something to make it more convenient though.

Well that's a bad example because manhattan has everything-lol What can;t you get in manhattan?
anthontherun 08-25-2005, 02:19 PM Philadelphia has everything too--I actually found a couple long-OOP Paul McCartney CDs in a Tower Records.
I buy based on the price. If Amazon has the cheapest price, I can wait a few days for it to ship. If it's cheaper at a store I'll get it there.

Dean Winchester 08-25-2005, 03:42 PM the majority of shows I get for free, so I get them online, sometimes before street.
With most shows I buy, I will just go and buy them at Best Buy or Target or whatever if it's on sale first week. Like I will likely buy Seinfeld season 5 the day it comes out at the store.
However, for a "can't miss price", I will buy online. I have an Amazon gift-card, so I think I'm going to just order the Buffy complete series box set on Amazon for $124.99 because I am sure I will not find it that inexpensive in the stores.

I agree with that, when you buy a DVD in the store, you get the pick of the litter about which box you want (like you, I am pretty anal about boxes having creases, etc...) while ordering online, you get what they send you. Luckily I haven't really had any horror stories of yet even though the box of Charmed season 1 wasn't exactly in the best shape when I got that DVD to review from Paramount.
robyrob 08-25-2005, 11:32 PM i mostly preorder online - its cheaper, I dont have to get HARRASSED by the IDIOTS working in the local BestBuy etc., and so far everything has arrived on or before the release date.
anthontherun 08-26-2005, 01:51 PM So is there any way that I could join the ClassicTVHits review team? :D

Well the UPS factor stops me from preordering
Ant-Lox 08-27-2005, 09:37 PM I go to the store...
dawsongirl 08-28-2005, 03:51 AM Online, always. I never buy them in store. The prices are too high. At amazon or DDD, I can get free shipping and a cheaper price. Plus, NO SALES TAX.

:yeahthat I got Quincy and Dragnet the day before they were released, and Lois and Clark, Adam-12, and Emergency the same day. And that was with FREE shipping, the kind that is supposedly slower. I wasted no gas and fought no crowds and spent less money overall.

I've never had a title come UPS. It always comes in the mail.
Johnny S 08-28-2005, 11:48 AM I usually go to the store, but when I am old enough and have a credit card I will always order online.
TVJunkie101 08-28-2005, 11:54 AM I almost always order mine online (or get em through SitcomsOnline, being a reviewer). It's just easier. You know you can find em at Amazon or someplace cheaper online, and you don't have to get the looks the cashiers give you when buying a tv show, LOL.
Like I said, it's just easier. Saves on gas, time, etc. Go online, takes five/ten minutes and bam, done, and it's on the way.

So true. Damn those cashiers. Every time I buy a season of Buffy. What's wrong with a guy liking Buffy?

there are a few losers who've never watched the show who think it's an estrogen fest (like I remember an Amazon review for Seinfeld when some person said that they never liked Seinfeld but loved Buffy, and a person replied with "Buffy's a show for girls"). If you go online, you'll see the great majority of Buffy and Angel fanatics ARE MALE.

Amazon.com orders are shipped through UPS
gidgetgrape 08-28-2005, 03:43 PM Online - less expensive, better selection and sometimes I get the sets a day before they are in stores.

yep, depends on the bulk though I noticed. I remember pre-ordering Diff'rent Strokes from DeepDiscount and got it the Saturday before street, but then when I preordered Ellen season 1, which was a smaller box, I didn't get it until 2-3 days late
Superstar 08-28-2005, 03:48 PM I buy most tv show DVDs online, I think the only tv dvd I bought in a store was Friends
TV Watcher 08-28-2005, 07:10 PM I buy DVDs online sometimes or if I feel like looking around at selections first then go to a store like Best Buy usually:)

TV DVD Fan 08-29-2005, 10:44 PM Yeah those cashiers. I bought GG S1 in some store, and the guy (some real *******) laughed and showed it to a co-worker who chuckled too. Oh wow, a guy who likes Golden Girls, hehe! Gee, I wonder why I watch it... because its funny, you ******* cashiers!

TV DVD Fan 08-30-2005, 05:06 PM I didn't want to cause a scene in a crowded store in a crowded mall at Christmas shopping time! (Nov. when the GG S1 DVD was released, still waitin' to get S2.)

You should have taken your business to another store. It's not the cashier's place to judge your purchase. It's a great way to lose customers.

First of all Pat, i don;t think you should have taken the situation so seriously. When you noticed them laughing you should have joined them and said-"What can I say, I guess I'm a fan of all type of TV shows"
TVFactFan 08-30-2005, 06:58 PM My Amazon orders have always come USPS.
How is that? Is there a way to choose USPS on the site? Why would you get your stuff delivered through USPS and my stuff comes UPS? I'm not understanding what you are saying
TV DVD Fan 08-30-2005, 07:53 PM Solomon, everyone was sharing their experiences, so I shared mine. I didn't take it seriously, I just think they all have no life if thats all they can do.
I'm not leading a hate fest for them.

you could point out that if the Golden Girls sucks so bad, why have they constantly been Lifetime's #1 series for eight years and running? I didn't have any problems buying 1 and 2 from where I got them. But I admit I was embarassed to tell my dad I wanted season one last Christmas.
I've had that happen to me with CD's in the past. I actually lied before and say I was getting them as gifts for some of the more embarassing cd's. I admittedly purchased 98 Degrees' album in the summer of 99, and when I walked up to the cashier, I already had a "my niece is turning 12 tomorrow, I am getting this for her" ready, lol.
You probably should've gone to a manager over the Golden Girls incident... cashiers are not supposed to do that.
TV DVD Fan 08-31-2005, 10:30 AM It really wasn't that big of a deal... I just thought I'd mention it since everyone else was listing their experiences. And its not like it was an explosive laugh, he tried to hide it, but nevertheless it wasn't professional. Just goes to show you how some people can be! :)
Good point btw.

TV DVD Fan 08-31-2005, 11:48 AM I never thought of that. Really guys its no big deal, as I said, just thought I'd mention it. :)

Dean Winchester 08-31-2005, 04:21 PM They could also not be necessarily laughing at you. Maybe somebody mentioned The Golden Girls earlier in the day and its sort of a "speak of the devil" kind of laugh.
oh, I know that. Many a time I might've mentioned a movie or something to a friend and then the next night stumbled upon it on TBS or USA or something and then I tell the person I talked about it with and we'll have a nice laugh. Maybe they were talking about The Golden Girls earlier and him buying the DVD was just perfect timing.
