I agree, those names are terrible. That's celebrities for ya. My husband wants to name our son Dashiell and call him Dash which is just as bad as all those other names imo. I prefer just plain ordinary classic names over these pretentious ones people are giving their kids today.

Here is my solution to this naming problem that parents seem to have, and I should know because I am the product of a parent who thought she was being clever and original by naming me with a name that is hard to remember but and male name, parents should give their child a temporary name until the child reaches school age, and then sit down with the child and explain that the name was given as a temporary name, and that the child has the chance to pick their own name. Again just a suggestion from someone who was stuck with a name she hates. :wave:

I know 2 people who have baby girls named Madison and the thing that cracks me up is they say they chose that name because they wanted something unique. They don't realize that a million other people had that same idea and that Madison is now the 2nd or 3rd most popular name in the country.

I don't see how China is a dumb name. It's an unusual name, but it's not a dumb one. There are many geographical locations that I think would make good names...

Don't ask me how I know most of this, but here goes:

Free Hershey-Carradine was a boy--he has since taken another name, Tom. Zowie Bowie was named for the Greek word "zoe", "life"--he now goes by "Joe". (And JT, I like his little sister's name, Alexandria--Bowie's daughter with Iman.)

Dweezil Zappa was unnamed until he chose his own name at about the age of 3 or 4 (Does your mother know that, Jrnygrl? LOL).

Brooklyn Beckham (and BTW I also hate giving kids a first name that has the same first letter as the last name LOL) was reportedly conceived in that borough of NYC, hence the name. But yes, it is a girl's name to me--mostly cuz all the other people I know of with that name are girls. Cruz is Spanish for "cross"--not sure why a British person would choose it, but I think it is common among Hispanics. Jon Bon Jovi also named his most recent son Romeo--a nice, literary Italian name (I majored in literature in college, so forgive me for liking that one). Bijou is French for "jewel", so I like that too.

Kyd is the last name of some Victorian (I think) author that David Duchovny (his father--whose own name is another example of two names together that make me cringe LOL) admires. And I have a cousin who topped that--named all three of her kids with names that have the initials KID...OMG!

Sean Combs' full name has always bugged me too--but if you forget the origin of the name Sean, it does have a nice flow to it. China and Madison (and Brooklyn and Chastity or Chasidy or some other variation) aren't dumb but have been overdone, not just by the famous. Maddox is not nearly as weird as some others--but does anyone know how Angelina Jolie came up with it? Lester Maddox or something?

But oh yes, the names of Julia Roberts' children are soooo outdated it is not even funny! As for those mentioned by Parakeet03, OMG! And when I hear Coco all I can think of is my daughters' pet rabbit LOL!

OK, I know no one said that the parents were dumb, but if you call someone's name "dumb" I think that's a big slap in the face to the parents since they obviously named them. I know if I had kids and someone called my kid's name dumb I'd be offended. Who cares though? You can name your kid whatever you want to! But I agree a lot of those names are STRANGE!

The only guy named Shannon Ive heard of is the late lead singer from Blind Meon, Shannon Hoon (RIP), there might be other guys with that name though

People used to name their children after a relative or a name that means something. Some of these modern names are not relative to family. My children(Katherine Mary and Joseph William) were named after beloved relatives. Whether they like it or not! :lol:

Speaking as a GUY, if my parents had named ME Madison, Id be using my middle name!!! :p

All that I can advise is that remember, your kids will have to live with the name you give them! But honestly, does anyone really like their name? :confused: :lol: Trendy names come and go and in my experience 50% of kids will end up with the same name! :lol: When my kids were little everybody were naming their kids either Jennifer or Jason.(70's) Nice names but so common! And in the 80's every other little girl was named Ashlie. When I was growing up in the 50's there were thousands of Linda's , Debbie's , Pamela's and Diane's. Yes, it is a unisex name. One of my co-workers' ex-husband's name is Madison. She also named her youngest daughter Madison. But she named her Madison because she's always liked the name....not because of her dad.

I am actually pretty good friends w/ a guy from school who was originally born in India- he was adopted and taken to America when he was 3 months old in 1981, so he has an Americanized name. :( It would've been cool to see what his name would have been if he was named before leaving India.

I always saw Dana as a girls name too as I have a female cousin with that name. I think it started out as a boys name. There was an actor in the 40's and 50's named Dana, can't think of his last name though, not even sure if Dana was his birth name. A lot of names, Lindsey, Jamie, Sidney, Leslie, Kelly etc all started out male and slowly went to the girls. Tom and I have been doing a lot of online research on names lately and discovered a lot of interesting stuff like meanings of certain names, where they originated and their popularity over the years.
I am even starting to reconsider using the name Spencer for our boy ever since I discovered that there are people out there giving this name to their daughters. Its only one of 2 names that Tom and I can agree on though.
