View Full Version : I have to agree with the Bank Manager in the ep-"The Mural", what J.J painted was....
TVFactFan 08-21-2005, 01:31 AM TRASH!!!!!-lol What a horrible painting for a bank. Didn't fit at all. Like the man said, he wanted to see the HAPPY side of Ghetto life, no Big Money Grip shooting Pool inside the Dirty A$$ Pool Hall. J.J was a certified Idiot
Ireneparalegal 08-21-2005, 01:33 AM Like I said before, the ghetto may be in general a bad place, but there are good people. Who wants to see a pool hall when they walk inside the bank? Or wherever that mural was? It's a nice mural, just needed to painted somewhere else.
Brian Damage 08-21-2005, 01:36 AM I agree, it was bad taste.

Not only was J.J dumb in school, he didn't have common sense either. Like the bully said in Lunch Money Ripoff, J.J was nothing but a BROOM STICK WITH TEETH-lol No Brains at all

Man, and that mouth of JJ's was also sooooo huge. I wonder how many cigarettes one could put in his mouth????

Man, that painting was fresh! Like JJ said, "What can be happier than shooting a little 8 ball."
nlearfan 08-21-2005, 09:57 AM Yea but what does an 8-ball have to do with the bank? There was absolutely no connection. He should've painted that exact same thing on the facade of a pool hall.
I still like how James stood up for JJ, although I dislike how he was jealous that JJ was coming through for Thelma.

I don't think he was jealous, i think it was being disappointed with himself for not being able to come through for Thelma.

JJ was a ghetto ar-tist, he paints what he feels. Just like when Flo asked him "Why can't you paint trees, mountains, green meadows?"
JJ: As soon as we get some of 'em around here, I'll paint 'em.
Besides what kind of picture could he have painted for a bank...........a safe?
TVFactFan 08-21-2005, 10:50 PM JJ was a ghetto ar-tist, he paints what he feels. Just like when Flo asked him "Why can't you paint trees, mountains, green meadows?"

The Bank Manager told J.J what he wanted him to paint on the Wall-"Kids playing in a Fire Hydrant"
But for some odd reason, J,J painted BIG WILLIE KOONTZ And THE GANG-lol
Ireneparalegal 08-21-2005, 10:57 PM actually Soloman, i think the bank manager was referring to JJ's other mural of kids playing near a fire hydrant, which is why he commissioned JJ to paint a mural similar to that one in his bank. He said words to the effect of: "I want you paint something that reflects ghetto life, such as the children playing by the fire hydrant".
Brieannas21 08-21-2005, 11:01 PM The Bank Manager told J.J what he wanted him to paint on the Wall-"Kids playing in a Fire Hydrant"
But for some odd reason, J,J painted BIG WILLIE KOONTZ And THE GANG-lol
He didn't say he wanted JJ to paint a picture with kids playing. He said that he saw a painting that JJ had painted with kids playing in the Hydrant that one of his friends bought from JJ.
The manager or Owner never told JJ to paint a certain painting. He should have talked to JJ and asked him about the things that he painted and he shoud have looked at all of JJ paintings before he asked him. JJ painted what he knew and what he saw in everyday life, So he painted the Pool Hall. Everyone liked the painted except for the manager.

But since Mr. Hewitt's reason for coming to the Evans APT was because of the kids playing in the fire hydrant, It seemed like J.J would have had enough sense to paint a LARGER VERSION of the picture Mr. Hewitt was impressed with.
Ireneparalegal 08-21-2005, 11:04 PM It's a beautiful mural, it's spectacular, but not for a bank building.

True. bottom line if someone is commissioned to do a mural on a public building, best that the manager and the painter sit down and discuss the details. Dumb!!!!

Oh yeah, nothing says banking like kids playing in a fire hydrant. That's just about as ghetto as playing 8 ball in a pool hall. JJ probably figured he liked one ghetto painting, he'd like 'em all.
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 12:03 AM okay okay...the bank manager said he wanted a painting that would reflect the happy or positive side of ghetto life. something like that. kids playing with a fire hydrant (one shooting out water I assume) is something you see alot in the big cities. So that would have been appropriate, but the bank manager wanted something similar to that.
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 12:04 AM he wanted something that reflected ghetto life.
craftman 08-22-2005, 12:17 AM he wanted something that reflected ghetto life.
Ummm, you mean like shooting pool in a pool hall. ;)

You know damn well what the bank manager wanted....DUH!!!! There are murders in the ghetto too, but you don't want that crap painted on the wall!!!
craftman 08-22-2005, 12:31 AM You know damn well what the bank manager wanted....DUH!!!! There are murders in the ghetto too, but you don't want that crap painted on the wall!!!
Well give me an example of the happy side of ghetto life. Welfare, unemployment, gangs, winos, junkies, run down buildings............
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 12:42 AM KIDS PLAYING WITH FIRE HYDRANT WATER...KIDS RIDING THEIR BIKES...A FAMILY IN THE PARK...KIDS PLAYING IN THE SNOW (IF THEIR CITY SNOWS DURING WINTER) KIDS PLAYING STICKBALL...KIDS PLAYING DODGEBALL...KIDS PLAYING HIDE AND SEEK...KIDS IN THE PARK...A FATHER PLAYING WITH HIS KIDS...A MOTHER PLAYING WITH HER KIDS...KIDS EATING ICE CREAM...
Brieannas21 08-22-2005, 01:37 AM Where did Kids come into this. He wanted JJ to paint him a picture and that's what JJ did. If he wanted a certain kinda picture then he should have told JJ what to paint. So it's the Bank Managers fault, Playing pool is a great past time hanging with your buddies is a great past time. It's what they all see and is what they are use too.
So the manager should have looked at all of JJ's work before he asked him to paint anything, to get a feel of what his art was about.
You don't buy a used car before test driving it. So he should have talked to JJ more and he didn't. JJ did what he was told
So I have to agree with Craftman on this one.

I know. check my previous posts. I did say this already. but somebody decided to be a wise guy and posted what positive things are there in the ghetto????? welfare??unemployment??? etc. I mentioned kids because of the kids playing w/fire hydrant painting that JJ did. We have already discussed how it's the bank manager's fault. Any two idiots in the world would have discussed the mural beforehand.
PrettyinPink55 08-22-2005, 02:08 AM It's a beautiful mural, it's spectacular, but not for a bank building.
I just saw the episode for the first time today, and I have to agree...a beautiful mural, but not for a bank.

Exactly.!!!!!
nerrad 08-22-2005, 07:37 AM Agreed. Bad taste for a bank. I used to think about that when I was a kid.
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 11:41 AM You know, i was 11 when I saw that episode for the first time (during GT first run) and even then I knew it was a bad idea for a bank!!!!! My opinion has not changed. Obviously others feel the same way.
nerrad 08-22-2005, 01:07 PM "What's wrong with shooting a little 8 ball"?
Ireneparalegal 08-22-2005, 02:45 PM "What's wrong with shooting a little 8 ball"?
I love 8-ball. But the topic is was it bad for a bank building?
nerrad 08-22-2005, 02:53 PM Oh no. That's what JJ said to the bank manager. I also thought the painting was bad taste for a bank.
TripperFan 08-22-2005, 03:14 PM I don't think he was jealous, i think it was being disappointed with himself for not being able to come through for Thelma.
Yeah - that's how I took it too - as a father, normally he's the one who's the provider for the family.
I agree though - even though shooting pool can be fun, it wasn't appropriate for a bank. Especially the poolhalls I remember from the 70s - most of them were MAJOR dives and pretty seedy. Usually THE place where bets were made or drugs were sold. I'm sure he could have painted kids playing in a playground - or shooting some B-ball or neighbours coming together.
As an artist myself, the first rule is that if you're being commissioned by someone else, you paint what they want even if you don't agree with it. Its their money they're spending afterall. If you stick to your guns too much, that's when you become the perverbial (sp?) "starving artist".
TVFactFan 08-22-2005, 07:29 PM To see the Happy side of Ghetto Life all someone would have to do is look at the Opening Credits of Season 1, 2, and 3 when the Little boys are running around and the other little boy on the Bike

I still can't believe that is a GIRL. That to me, I always thought was a DUDE!!!!!!! I looked at it good last night w/my daughter. She said it looks like a guy!!!

;) Glad you got a good laugh!!
I'll have to watch more closely tonight to check out this guy/girl thing - hey - maybe its the person they used in that scene where people think Michael's kissing a guy!!! She had just grown up a bit from when that segment was filmed!!! We might just explain a couple of things here! :eek3:
From the looks of her, she could have been related to Aunt Esther from Sanford & Son - either way, pretty unnerving to have that running right atchya! Don't envy that cameraman one bit!!

He did Clarify, he said Kids playing in a fire hydrant, that was his example but J.J was just too DUMB to follow his directions-lol
Ireneparalegal 08-24-2005, 12:33 AM Ha Ha true
nerrad 08-24-2005, 07:03 AM I wonder if the people at the ceremony really like it. James 'sorta' scared everyone into saying "yeah". :)
TripperFan 08-24-2005, 09:00 AM I watched this whole ep very closely last night (including those fabulous closing credits - yep - its a girl alright! As a matter of fact, I think I went to middle school with that chick!!! She used to beat everybody up!!) And I don't think the kids were really running - looked more to me that they had just FINISHED rolling somebody. I expect some poor, scrawny girl in pigtails to be hanging upside down from the monkey bars in the playground that they just came from. LOL
The one thing that really stood out to me what the nerve of the geezer - to expect he could just walk into someone's home like he's a long lost uncle to drop dead!!?!?! At least wait for Michael to be there before you go explaining what your purpose is. I mean, who the hell wants a dead body in their apt.?
On the other hand, it was a heart warming ending - what a great way to go eh? Everybody partying and singing and dancing and then you just sit down and let go - couldn't ask for better! (Except for maybe a Christmas tree - why weren't there ANY sort of decorations put up - other than the ones Willona's boyfriend paid for, for the New Year's celebration)? I know they were supposed to be quite poor, but you'd think they could afford a small table tree even from the Salvation Army or something.
You guys would know - was James not in that ep because he was in negotiations with the producers - which eventually led to his firing at this point?
Brieannas21 08-24-2005, 02:01 PM He did Clarify, he said Kids playing in a fire hydrant, that was his example but J.J was just too DUMB to follow his directions-lol
He didn't say that he wanted JJ to paint him a picture of kids playing in the hydrant. He said he saw a painting that JJ painted of kids playing in the hydrant and he liked it. He should have told JJ that he wanted him to paint the kids playing if he wanted that painting.
You don't have someone come into your house to paint your walls and don't tell them what color you want your walls painted.
Ireneparalegal 08-24-2005, 02:16 PM Unless you live in the projects, then you have no choice, THEY PAINT WITH THE COLOR THEY! WANT!!!! not you...LOL LOL LOL
