View Full Version : Sin City
Janice 08-18-2005, 07:46 PM I saw the trailer for Sin City at the theater a few months back. It looks wild. I rented it for tonight. Has anyone seen it? RottenTomatoes.com gave it a 78%, a very high rating.
The movie stars everyone and their mother.

Brian Damage 08-18-2005, 07:49 PM I have not yet seen it, but my friend who is a movie critic where I work said it is visually brilliant. He said some parts of the story don't hold up, but overall an entertaining movie.
barwars 08-18-2005, 09:01 PM Visually brilliant, yes. But it wasn't all that great of a film. Here's my semi-review of the movie, but it's more about the DVD than the film itself....

Haven't seen it yet. It's on the blockbuster.com list though.
lol its a pretty crazy movie-and janice youre right it seems like every single person has a part in it! even im in it! ;)
Brian Damage 08-18-2005, 09:37 PM I heard Quentin Tarantino is a guest director....that alone is worth me checking it out.
i dont get what a guest director would do-wouldnt he just be a director? and if he didnt have total director control wouldnt he just be co-director?
Brian Damage 08-18-2005, 10:47 PM Yeah, I don't get that either.
dlemond 08-18-2005, 10:56 PM I haven't seen it either, but it is supposed to be a few interconnecting stories, so I assume he directed one of them.
barwars 08-19-2005, 08:56 AM He directed one scene, although I'm unsure which one.

That's a great review! Very well written. I agree with everything you wrote.
It's really not my kind of movie either because I have a hard time watching violence. The violence in Sin City, although gory and plentiful, is watchable as it's done with what the critics now call 'stylized violence'. Kill Bill employed this technique as well. It's sort of like a comic strip.
I recommend this movie. The characters and the plots were waaaay out there, but if you suspend disbelief, it's a lot of fun.
The movie is visually stunning.

Thanks. I liked both Kill Bill movies a lot, but Sin City might have been just a little too out there for me to fully enjoy.
LucyCompanyPhan 08-20-2005, 01:27 PM I love Sin City. Its my favorite movie so far this year. Its just visually great and its different from anything ever done. Its just got a very big 'cool' factor to it.
TripperFan 08-20-2005, 01:40 PM NOW I come across this thread!
Frank was hounding me about it two nights ago - "any reviews on Sin City on SO?" I couldn't find anything on it.
He's watching it in the home theatre room right now as I post this. Sure SOUNDS visually stunning if you know what I mean. The dishes are rattling in the kitchen.
dirrtycruz 10-27-2005, 10:37 AM I just watched Sin City again recently and it was just so good. First of all, this is not really a movie, it is not really even a collection of short stories on film- and it was not intended to be! Instead, the movie is practically a frame-by-frame reconstruction of three of the greatest graphic novels ever written. If you were looking for a ‘movie’ then you probably are not going to get it.
If, however, like me you love the original Sin City graphic novels, then you are going to love this. It is pretty much a companion piece to the original artwork- and closer than I would have believed possible. Now if they can only do the same with Miller’s “Dark Knight.”
The spirit here is classic film noir - in fact, it is more noir than noir, yet without appearing campy. But yet, it is not quite noir, because the attitude is clearly one of good vs. evil - and good wins. Good may get the hell beat out of it and resort to hyper violence, but it wins. It wins because the innocent are either protected or avenged. Yeah, maybe these are morality plays, but they are good morality plays. Marv was my hero before I saw this- and he is still my hero now: “That the best you can do, you Pansies?” Make sure you check out the film if you have never seen it.

tylerjjj 10-27-2005, 09:55 PM I haven't seen it yet but all my friends are saying its the best comic book movie of the year. I doubt that because Batman Begins was superb. To be honest, I wasn't even aware it was based on a comic book. I loved the Kill Bill movies and this looks kind of similar in it's style. I'll have to check it. I also heard Tarantino directed a scene.
ABlairican Pie 10-29-2005, 03:19 PM From the first second I saw the opening black and white with a splash of color
scene, I was HOOKED. I loved the film noir concept behind it. And I almost didn't see the connection with all the stories at first, but as I went on, it all made sense. The movie was EXCELLENT!!

Yeah, you have to see it! If you like Kill Bill movies, then I think you will enjoy Sin City! Let me know what you think after you had a chance to check it out!

I think it is so smart how the 3 stories come together! I am glad you liked the film.
