View Full Version : Hey..A word from the Moderator...PLEASE READ.
Living In a '70's Dream 08-14-2005, 03:39 AM Hey Folks..as you all know I am a pretty easy going person. But in the recently I have been having problems with an old thread that was bumped up. The thread was about where the word "HONKY" came from? and there have been a couple of members here found the thread appalling..though I do not tolerant any racial slang myself and I also consider that I pet peeve of mine, I know that the thread was not initially meant to be racially bias or to express racism ..but not to cause MORE any problems I decided to delete the thread...
Thanks
Tara
P.S. Solomon if you read this: remember that I think very highly of you and you are definitely one of the many highlights of Sitcoms On Line..so please do not take it personally that I deleted a thread that you created..but this message is for EVERYONE who steps out of line with any kind of racial comments or anything that is portrayed racially in a negative light that might offend people... peacesign:
P.S.S. If anyone has a problem on this board or I as a moderator please contact me via PM..I will be more than happy to help you :)
Sammy Reed 08-14-2005, 12:50 PM Now we can't say "honky" without being subjected to PC censorship? It's "out of line" now?
This is my last message on these boards.
TripperFan 08-14-2005, 01:41 PM Honestly - to complain about that thread is just incredibly anal. It was posted by a white person and most of the comments on it were made by whites (myself included).
It WAS relevant to the show since it was said by a character - just as many things had been said by Archie Bunker or George Jefferson. It was the era. As a matter of fact, we've had discussions on the other racial "slurs" made on the those shows without any problems in the past. Interesting how this just happened a couple of weeks after WE were pissed off at the blantant racism going on at the TV Land boards. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if this was meant as "payback" for that from someone over there.
Get real people. We can't even ask simple questions anymore? I see more and more ridiculous censorship happening. If you don't like it, don't read the thread. Nobody was calling anybody anything.
Tara - this isn't meant for you - I know you have to do what you have to do when something is reported. Its just people are getting too ridiculous and Solomon is NOT racist, nor is any other member I've conversed with on these boards.

I agree with you tripper, it was simply a question regarding the origin of the word, which was in fact subject matter regarding the 70's shows. I was unable to reply unfortunately before the thread was locked. I was able to read many of the replies which in my opinion were very diplomatic and informative.
It is unfortunate that a public board will draw many people who are looking to misinterpret and cause confusion.
It was not posed in a derogatory, prejudicial nor racist manner.

I feel for the moderator and I don't want to step on peoples' toes here. But the question was a relevant one, just like if one asked the meaning or the origin of N****, or C***N. The person who made the first complaint is someone who rarely posts anything on this board and I TAKE OFFENSE to someone who rarely posts anything to reply to a thread that was NOT TAKEN OFFENSIVELY BY THE REGULARS. I am not black. I am not white. I was called the "H" word when I was younger because of my very light skin, but it was done in jest. The regulars here know intelligently what is truly meant when someone like Soloman asks a genuine question like the one that set this argument going. And if the posts of that thread were read again, you can see that nothing racial or anything hatred was said. When my teen daughter watched Good Times last week for the first time she asked me what the word "C**N meant, as well as the "H" word. An innocent child asking an innocent question to something that was SAID BY A CHARACTER ON A TV SHOW THAT US GT FANS LOVE TO DEATH OR WE WOULDN'T BE HERE POSTING. WE WOULD BE ON TV LAND TALKING RACIAL, HATE, BIGOTRY AND PLAIN IGNORANCE. Like I said, nothing against the moderator. This is to those who aren't regular posters and have nothing better to do than ruin the friendship we have here. Thank You.
Truth be told, one person who reported the post was threatening a civil suit as they thought it was demeaning. Personally, I was not offended by the thread and wasn't going to delete or even lock it myself. It was an innocent question.
Brian Damage 08-14-2005, 10:24 PM What surprises me so much is that someone would get offended by it. That term hasn't been used in decades. "Cracker" at least is more recent.

Well if this person has that kind of time then they need to go over to TVLand message boards with their threats and then maybe they will clean up the blatant ignorance, hatred, and prejudice that appeared on their GT forum.
This person is obviously insecure and not very intelligent. They have to presume intelligence and power with their unfounded threats.
And they must be broke seeking some any possible way to get some money. These are the type of people who deliberately fall down in the grocery store in order to file a suit.
I'm very curious as to the age of the persons reporting the thread as offensive/demeaning. Probably someone barely able to walk or talk when these shows aired.
GeorgeWBushGOP 08-15-2005, 11:04 AM The most intolerant people I have ever met in my life are the people who claim they have tolerance for others.
TripperFan 08-15-2005, 11:30 AM And great - just what every administrator wants - a member that's going to threaten "legal action" when they report a post. Give me a break! You can get away with that once or twice, but then who wants to converse with someone like that for very long.
They just shouldn't be on the internet if they're afraid of seeing contraversial topics.
And frankly, from anything I saw on that thread - they wouldn't have a case anyway - they want to sue someone, as we say, hit the TV Land boards - there's plenty going on over there they can rag about.

No it wasn't a scerect, my race was never important because we were discussing TV Shows. But since she assumed I was white, i told her I was black not white. Other than that, it wouldn't have never been brought up because I'm not concerned about what a S.O. member race is.

That knowledge comes from lots of researching
TripperFan 08-16-2005, 09:11 AM That knowledge comes from lots of researching
EXACTLY!!! And part of that researching is being able to feel that you can openly and fully discuss ALL topics, scenes, contraversies, or anything else about a show.
That's funny Solomon - LOL - for some reason I though you were white - regardless, it doesn't matter one bit to me what colours we all are - to me, its discussions like these that actually breakdown any barriers or misunderstandings the races have - by asking "sensitive" and probing questions sometimes and bottom line, we're all sitcoms fans!
Even I learned something - didn't know "cracker" was the latest term-LOL - and now I'm interested to know where that one comes from - and not offended in the least - I like crackers!!!

That's what I said in a previous post. I can't stand that we and this forum are being "threatened" by those who rarely post anyhow, but seem to find the time to rag on us for so-called "racist" comments. If I ask a question, it is because I am curious and I want more info regarding something. If it pertains to something that was said by a character on t.v. then why can't it be said here on this forum?
TripperFan 08-17-2005, 10:43 PM I hate people who get all caught up on the "politically correct". It just goes to show how powerful words are.
Plus, I find it really interesting that the same person has posted on another thread where the "N" word is discussed, but that's not the same as the thread that was deleted. ? huh? What difference is there - even they're supposedly trying to point that out, but then its fine to discuss it when just an initial is used? Come on!!
As for "cracker", that's all I can think - hell, guess it's better than being called a marshmallow!!
Frankly, I think of all of us like cats or dogs - different colours, different types of hair and coats, different face shapes, but in the end - your still a CAT! Still use a litterbox, still do what all the other cats do. ;)

You're right. The whole concept of racism is stupid, and that's what these shows proved. They obviously had to use the words to prove that it is stupid. Anyone who cant realize that has lost the intent of the shows completely, therefore should not be posting.

It's funny, my friends and I just NEVER truly think about it - we kid the heck out of each other sometimes for our differences - its all part of the fun when you know nobody truly means anything nasty by it. And especially by having open discussions with each other about stuff like this breaks down racism in the long run because we'll all get over our ignorance!
And yes - wasn't it really the Archies, and Georges and Freds that are the ones who looked silliest? My God, have we learned NOTHING in the 30 + years they've been on?
The funniest thing to me too are the sunworshipping whites like myself, who've risked skin cancer over the years to get as dark a tan as possible (which I proudly do btw) - I mean, how ironic if they looked down on someone because of the colour of their skin.
Oh yeah, the interesting thing to me too was that they used the term "African American". With all due respect, I'm Canadian myself, and I know my black friends might take exception to the use of that term - they're not American, and probably not African in heritage - many come from the West Indies and Carribean. So we can take this and really shred it to pieces!

And even in Egypt (people freak when you remind them that Jesus was an Ethopian Jew - likely NOT the blonde, blue-eyed guy you see in the frames) ;) as well as Fiji (one of my bestest buds hails from there and her family looks like a U.N. reunion).
Well now, there just might be some Canadian African Americans.....the ancestors of slaves who either escaped to Canada or relocated there (many went to Nova Scotia) after they were freed. But hell, how long can the name get? And honestly, I cannot stand the term "caucasian" - sounds like some kind of skin disease to me. I'm white, wannabe like Brian - born tanned - didn't happen - I'm over it!
The best was when I worked with a couple of black gals named Andrea - we hung out together a lot and when I was going around introducing the newest Andrea - I got a lot of mileage out of, "Hi, I'm Cathie, and this is my sister Andrea, and my other sister Andrea". Life's too short to try to say we don't know the differences or to try to tippytoe and sidestep and making gaffs - lighten up some. ;)

Yeah, it really irks me to see Cleopatra movies or any movie dealing with that era and they show light skinned people with beautiful make-up. What a slap in the face that is. Kinda reminds me of the movie "Breakfast at Tiffanys" with the "asian man". Or all those westerns with whites playing American Indians.

 OMG - or when they got that Italian guy to play the crying Indian for the pollution commericals back in the 60s and 70s????
I know - to me, that's more of an insult than any racial slur said on those Lear shows - they were there for a very good purpose - anyone who knows theatre or screenwriting knows that certain words - whether racial, or swearing or whatever, can be very important to defining the story and are necessary. We were taught that in theatre arts - that we could use those words as long as it related to the character. I have to admit, there's been some things Michael will come out with, and I'm like - hey - that's not fair! But then I quickly remember that its his character, somewhat racist maybe, but for the time and place, he might have well had good reason to be. Hard to love a race, when many of them structured it to hold you back. It takes years to teaching the opposite - on both sides, by discussions just like we have here to understand and appreciate.
Yeah, Hollywood was very much racist - look at how for years, minorities got the roles of domestics. Or when it came time for mass productions with thousands of extras, they used white or very light skinned actors to portray middle-eastern or African peoples. Check out the biblical ones too! Yet if you notice, the role of Judas would go to the "darkest" actor on the set.
Mikado 08-18-2005, 03:44 PM wow i never realised Iron eyes Cody was American-Italian...though, he was Indian at heart: Although Iron Eyes was not born an Indian, he lived his adult years as one. He pledged his life to Native American causes, married an Indian woman (Bertha Parker), adopted two Indian boys (Robert and Arthur), and seldom left home without his beaded moccasins, buckskin jacket and braided wig. His was not a short-lived masquerade nor one that was donned and doffed whenever expedient — he maintained his fiction throughout his life and steadfastly denied rumors that he was not an Indian, even after his half-sister surfaced to tell the story in 1996 and to provide pointers to the whereabouts of his birth certificate and other family documents.
Cody died on 5 January 1999 at the age of 94.
Mikado 08-18-2005, 03:53 PM all of this reminds me of the story of Asian-American actress Anna May Wong....Shed have to play "The other woman" while some OBVIOUSLY non-Asian woman like Catherine Hepburn would be made up to "look" Chinese, and would get all the good lines , the man and the screen kiss. Poor Anna always wound up commiting " lovers suicide"...mainly , she said, cause the leading man was ALSO a white guy playing an Asian. ( Hollywood didnt want a real Asian woman doing a screen kiss with a white actor ....geez, that seems SO stupid now, doesnt it????? )

sure does. does anyone remember the actor Robbie Benson? Well, he does work behind the camera now. However, back in the days he played the lead in a movie abt CHICANO GANG LIFE. You know how much of a slap in the face that was to us hispanics? With the available hispanic actors who could've played that part, Robbie was chosen because he was "well-known". Nothing like being "type-cast" as a fish for the rest of your life in someone's mind! :cuckoo
CindyRoxiesLair2006 05-12-2006, 07:43 PM ...Don Knotts and Charlie Chan rolled up into one interesting soul! For real!
 :p
Sammy Reed 05-17-2006, 12:00 AM Well, after 9 months, I'm glad to say I'm back to this board.
Although there are still problems I still feel strongly about, I have decided not to let this keep me from taking whatever pleasure there is to these boards.
There is another message board I post on. It also has problems with censoring words for being merely "politically incorrect", while recently allowing some truly foul language in. But I just can't get away from there, because it's fun to talk about interesting things. I figured if I feel that way about that board, I might as well cut this one some slack as well.
So guys, all I have to say at this point is:
"Whatcha gonna do, when VeraMania, spills her box of straws all over you!"
At least, you can still say "fish".
And - Don Knotts?!? OOOOOFFF!
