We have some in he store where I work, there on the front check out stands, these ones a big,I don't remember them being that big, this one little kid wanted one,his parents said no,and the dad said "you can break your break your teeth on those"
*MIBabe03* 08-12-2005, 10:35 PM I always hated those things.
Kazza 08-12-2005, 11:03 PM I remember them and still see them at the store!
I don't let my DD eat them though; she can chip a tooth.
Karen* 08-12-2005, 11:07 PM Those things are evil, yet tasty.
TripperFan 08-12-2005, 11:11 PM Yeah I agree - they drove you nuts because they were just big enough to be annoying, but you knew you didn't dare try to bite into them, but they tasted sooooooo good!
I hear there's a store downtown called, "Sugar Mountain" and it sells all the old candy that you can't get anymore like jawbreakers (I just worry that its the ORIGINAL stuff)!! I mean, it must be expensive if they just make it in small batches - unless it comes from other parts of the world where it isn't banned).
I also wish you could get Black Cat Bubblegum still - like DoubleBubble only in sweet licorce flavour - yum!
Courtnee 08-12-2005, 11:15 PM I've never had it.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 08-12-2005, 11:16 PM Ew I always thought they tasted horrible.
TripperFan 08-12-2005, 11:17 PM I've never had it.
They were cool (and strange sort of). REALLY hard candy - usually with a light marbling on the outside for about a 1/2 thick - then you got to bubble gum in the centre - it was getting to it that made you work. They'd last for hours. Not something you want to be eating with a tele-marketing job! ;)
Living In a '70's Dream 08-12-2005, 11:19 PM I loved Jawbreakers
Hollow 08-13-2005, 12:43 AM why is everyone referring to them in past tense? they're all over the place. go to wal*mart or something right now and you'll find some..

Howdoulikemenow333 08-13-2005, 12:55 AM Speaking of candy's in the past,Rock Candy, Iused to love that, There's also a store near here where they make nothing, but candy, chocolate coverd all kinds of things, even have a chocolate waterfall.Plus I remember pop-rocks.

You just answered your own question - the "jawbreakers" today aren't nearly as hard as they were 30 or so years ago - we're talking KILLERS. That's why they were temporarily taken right off the market and then reintroduced still large, and fairly hard, but not like they used to be.

 Yeah - I think some kids actually did break teeth or dislocate jaws on them because it became a challenge to the less brilliant ones usually....ah, back in the days when kids weren't so protected and left to figure life's tougher lessons out by ourselves!

Rachel3118 08-13-2005, 01:10 PM There good, but I just want to chew them and you can't.
Superstar 08-13-2005, 01:13 PM I've seen them but never had one. They look gross.
Mijada 08-13-2005, 03:30 PM They taste good but they are very bad for your teeth.
Tuesday Weld 08-13-2005, 03:32 PM They're ok.
YoliUSA 08-13-2005, 03:38 PM I used to eat ones that were called Gobstoppers, but they didnt have bubble gum inside. Instead, they were filled with tart candy.
Sharop 08-13-2005, 06:51 PM Jean Shepherd writes fondly of them in his 1966 book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" (the film "A Christmas Story" was inspired by some of the chapters in that book.) He writes of them in the chapter entitled, "Old Man Pulaski and the Infamous Jawbreaker Blackmail Caper."

Oh man that movie "A Christmas Story" was written for our generation - we get a kick out of watching that thing several times each year. It was soooo well done.
Alaskaboy: - yep - I loved rock candy too - you can still get it. My aunt would bring me back the "genuine" stuff from England during her trips there.
And yes - Pop Rocks were great! There's a "legend" attached to those similar to the green M&Ms. ;)
Anyone remember "wax lips"? I had my first "kiss" at age 8 in the closet with my best friend at the time. We both wore the lips so it doesn't really count!
