View Full Version : How Much is Gasoline/Petrol where you live
Chelsea 08-12-2005, 02:31 PM (Note: Many countries measure gas/petrol in terms of litres/liters rather than gallons (Gallons of gasoline in the US, for example). As a common courtesy, can everyone please say whether they're talking about litres or gallons)
The last time I was anywhere near a gas pump, last Sunday, gasoline was $2.21 per gallon. Today, I passed by a gas station (remember, I live during Summer in rural KY, so I don't do that often), and discovered that the price had jumped all the way to $2.54 per gallon.
What's the cost status of gasoline where you guys are at?
Edit: Bolded my friendly reminder about stating whether it's gallon or liter
swedeace 08-12-2005, 02:35 PM It's between $2.30 to $2.50 where I live. It's expected to hit nearly $3/gallon. Geez... that's quite rough!
*MIBabe03* 08-12-2005, 02:37 PM A few days ago it was $2.35, but other places I saw it for $2.45
David 08-12-2005, 02:38 PM Last one I saw was 2.44

AllIWantIsYourClutch 08-12-2005, 03:16 PM $2.64/gallon. Ugh.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 08-12-2005, 03:41 PM I just happened to look at the price at a random gas station yesterday and it's $2.59 for regular unleaded. I would like to get my own car, but at times like this when the gas is this expensive I'd rather not. I just drive my parents' cars and help contribute some money for the gas.
Moonlight Lady 08-12-2005, 04:05 PM I filled the car yesterday and it was around $2.50 here in Upstate, NY.
MsOrange 08-12-2005, 04:19 PM 2.25... good compared to some, but it hurts me everytime I have to get gas :(
PZelda 08-12-2005, 04:31 PM 2.64 as the highest in most locations, but I've seen 2.69 elsewhere.
InspectorExstead 08-12-2005, 05:14 PM $2.74...they're usually around that price. I haven't seen anything lower, but they certainly have been higher. Everytime I drive by the gas station, the numbers keep rising. AH!
TripperFan 08-12-2005, 05:27 PM We go by litres and for full serve, it's $1.03/l, therefore $3.89/gal and 9.99 cents for self serve so $3.78/gal (Cdn. $; regular unleaded)
I'm buying a bicycle!!
Brent88 08-12-2005, 05:48 PM It was $2.28 a gallon 2 days ago but I'm sure it's higher now!

dawsongirl 08-13-2005, 12:49 AM When my folks took off for Hawaii last week, it was $2.07/gallon. Last week sometime, it jumped 18 cents to $2.25. This morning, it jumped another 10 cents. I'm gonna have to walk to work and that's gonna take me FOREVER.

I should add that that is for the ethanol blend. The regular gas (the kind you buy in every state) is $2.45/gallon.

Pitooey 08-14-2005, 12:25 AM I paid $2.45 for Regular today. :(
James 08-14-2005, 01:39 AM On Monday, August 8, the Shell station by my apartment went up to $2.499/$2.599/$2.719 per gallon for regular, plus, and premium (err, V-Power!), respectively. Then on Thursday it was up to $2.559/$2.659/$2.779. However, it's back down to Monday levels.
I passed some stations Saturday showing $2.449.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 08-14-2005, 01:43 AM $2.69/gallon today.

PZelda 08-14-2005, 02:06 AM i just don't understand why people whine and cry and bitch so much over a difference of a few cents.
It adds up - FAST. If prices go up 6 cents and you have a 30-gallon tank, you're looking at a $1.80 addendum. $1.80 doesn't seem like much...but it will never be $1.80 the next time you fill it up, because the prices keep increasing.
People have cars with smaller tanks, too- my mom's only holds 15 gallons, and it adds up QUICKLY. She fills up every 180-280 miles or so, and she has NOT been happy with the gas prices. One day last week, gas was 2.29. It was 2.64 last time I checked. That's a 35-cent increase. My mom paid $5.25 more than she did last time for the gas in her car.

Chelsea 08-15-2005, 02:57 PM ...Taken early 1999. That gas station is in Nashville, TN. If that same gas station, today, were to use those exact same prices, there would be a gas line stretching from there to my house (~90 miles away)
spunkygirl 08-15-2005, 03:26 PM That first one :rotflmao::
Yep if that was the price around here, there'd be a major traffic jam for a very long time ;)
Gas here is now $2.69 :cuss:
Mikado 08-15-2005, 04:34 PM 95 to 102 a liter last i checked...not sure what that is a gallon

Anyhoo, on the way home Wednesday night, on Woodman Drive (OH 835) south of US 35 had two Shells and a Mobil (UDF c-store) at $2.999, but Swifty was $3.099. Then tonight said Shells and Mobil raised their prices to $3.099, but Swifty went up to $3.139!!!
What's that in March 1981 dollars? (March 1981 was, for those not in the know, the time of the highest gas price measured adjusted for inflation.) Has the U. S. of A. set a new record?

I heard on news today that some gas stations are having to pay astronomical prices for barrels of gas, which in some cases is all they can do. They have to charge those prices in hopes of staying afloat. Apparently the cases around Atlanta where gas is nearing 6$ a gallon are on the up and up after all. It scares me, a friend of mine reminded me of a conversation we had long ago where he predicted that we would come back to a primal state where we all would have to stuggle like they are down south to survive, starting with gas! I dismissed it them but now I'm starting to wonder. I'm looking into buying a Prius

¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 09-02-2005, 09:51 AM Gas prices keep on soaring
Supply shortages spur prices above $5 in Georgia, but analysts warn everyone will see big increases. It's a gasoline problem, not a crude problem, they say -- and it's temporary.
Gas prices nationwide are spiking almost as fast as station owners can change their signs, the result of fuel pipeline shutdowns and delayed deliveries since Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and Mississippi earlier this week.
Stations in and around downtown Atlanta had temporarily run out of gas, the Associated Press reported. The same was reported elsewhere, including parts of North Carolina, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Arizona. Many retailers who did have gas had no clue when their next shipments would come in.
"Everybody is panicking. They think there's not going to be any gas," said Keturah Jackson, a clerk at a gas station in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead district.
Gas prices jumped by more than 50 cents a gallon Wednesday in Ohio, 40 cents in Georgia and 30 cents in Maine. Reports of gouging surfaced as some stations in Georgia were reported to be charging as much as $6 a gallon.
The situation was worse in areas closer to the hurricane's path. In southwest Alabama, gas lines of 100 cars were commonplace early Thursday, extending out onto entrance ramps along Interstate 10. And most of the gas stations were closed, not for a lack of gas but for a lack of electricity to pump it. People were sitting in their cars for hours in anticipation of when power would be restored and the pumps working again.
How high can gas go? "I do think there will be pockets of stations in the country in the next two weeks that will price $4 (per gallon)," Ben Brockwell, independent analyst and director of Pricing and Data Services, told CNBC.
Though the latest data shows the nationwide gas price average $2.68 a gallon, the real figure could be 10 to 20 cents higher given reports that some stations are changing prices up to three times daily, said AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom.
The U.S. motorist group has received a number of complaints from members about the rapid rise in prices, alongside reports of prices topping $3 in many parts of the country, he said.
One cab driver says he watched in amazement as a New York gas station billboard price was changed from $2.91 a gallon to $3.49 even as he filled his tank on Wednesday night.
"If the price keeps going up like this, I may just have to quit driving this cab for a while," he said.
The increases followed price spikes on wholesale and futures markets Tuesday and Wednesday after the hurricane knocked off-line refineries and pipeline links along the Gulf Coast that provide about a third of the country's gasoline supplies. The good news? Analysts expect that prices will ease once supplies are restored.
President Bush, in an interview Thursday morning, called on motorists to cut back on driving where possible. "I would hope Americans conserve if given a choice," he said.
Keeping up with the change
Service station manager Randy Schuette is getting quite a workout changing the gasoline prices on his station's large sign.
"I bet I'm not done, either," he said Wednesday, hoisting price placards with a 20-foot pole at his station in Bismarck, N.D. At one point, he ran out of decimals, so a gallon's cost read $317.
"I don't have any three's with decimal points," he said. "Never needed them. I'm assuming people know that it's not $317 a gallon, but the day's not over yet, either."
"It's crazy," said Mike Currie of Bismarck, shaking his head as he topped off his truck's tank with gas. "I'm going to have to consider buying a Moped."
Painful but temporary
In addition to the devastation to lives and property, the hurricane aimed an ill-timed blast at a U.S. energy infrastructure already stretched thin, especially in the capacity to refine oil into gasoline, heating oil and other products. The shutdown of oil platforms, refineries and pipelines along the Gulf Coast drove energy prices sharply higher Tuesday.
Oil prices eased slightly on Wednesday after the White House said it planned to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to deal with any shortages of crude caused by Hurricane Katrina. But gasoline prices continued to rise, both at the wholesale and retail levels.
The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded rose 6 cents from Wednesday to Thursday, to $2.68, according to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report.
"On a national average, we could hit $3.25 at the pump easily, potentially even by this weekend," Jason Schenker, economist at Wachovia, told Reuters. "This is going to cut into consumer demand." Some analysts on Thursday predicted this current spike could send prices over $4 before subsiding.Start investing with $100.
Drivers in some areas of the country -- Hawaii, California, Illinois and Washington, D.C. -- were already paying more than $3 a gallon for premium unleaded even before Katrina hit, according to the AAA.
The record high gasoline price, when adjusted for inflation, was $3.11 a gallon in March 1981, according to the Energy Information Administration. The agency maintains a Web site for reporting cases of price gouging; click here.
How high will prices go?
How high will gas climb before prices cool off? There's no way of knowing until damage from the hurricane is fully assessed, but predictions of $4 gas are becoming more common. John Pearson, editor of financial newsletter "The Bottom Line," told CNBC's "Squawk Box" that $5 gasoline is very unlikely unless there is another supply disruption.
Demand could fall, he added -- not because of high prices, but because of inconvenience and long waits at gas stations.
Eight refineries were shut down due to Katrina, according to the Associated Press -- half of them producing gasoline. Vienna's PVM Oil Associates additionally reported at least three others flooded and power failures sidelining others for an unknown length of time.
Analysts expected some relief once electricity is restored to Gulf Coast pipelines and refineries, but they are unsure how long that will take.
This week's increases come atop a 40% price rise in the last year.
Finally, is behavior changing?
"We don't have a shortage of gasoline. We have a delivery problem," said Bill Weatherspoon, executive director of the North Carolina Petroleum Council, which represents major retailers that get gasoline from the pipelines.
In Georgia, a few gas stations were charging as much as $6 per gallon Wednesday after other retailers had run out of gas and long lines were reported across the state. In response, Gov. Sonny Perdue signed an executive order authorizing state sanctions against gas retailers who gouge consumers.
"I'm frankly embarrassed for our state and some of our businesses that we have to do this," said Perdue, after pleading with Georgians to remain calm.
President Bush issued his own warning to gougers in a Thursday morning interview. "I think there ought to be zero tolerance of people breaking the law during an emergency such as this, whether it be looting, or price-gouging at the gasoline pump or taking advantage of charitable giving, or insurance fraud," Bush said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
Bush said Americans should conserve more gasoline in response to the crisis and said he expected Saudi Arabia to do "everything they can" to provide more oil, Reuters reported. He said eight refineries are down in the Gulf and "it's going to take a while" to get them going again.
Paul Hornsnell, head of energy research at Barclays Capital in London, told the Associated Press that the damage translated into an estimated 30-million-barrel loss in gasoline output -- a problem that cannot be solved by increasing crude production or siphoning oil from the U.S. petroleum reserve.
The market did receive some help Wednesday when the federal government said it would loan oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to refiners facing shortfalls. And the Environmental Protection Agency said it would temporarily allow gasoline retailers nationwide to sell fuel that does not meet stringent summer air-quality standards.
"The EPA waiver was a big move," said John Kilduff, an analyst at Fimat USA in New York.
The problems soon could extend far beyond motorists' wallets. Energy experts say they are concerned about how hurricane damage to Gulf Coast natural gas and heating oil facilities will affect heating bills this winter. Rising jet fuel costs because of the hurricane also have put additional pressure on cash-strapped airlines.
In Georgia and North Carolina, state officials asked residents to conserve gas and government workers were ordered to limit nonessential travel. A suburban Atlanta vanpooling program also reported a 50% jump in participants since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast on Monday.

Max Whittaker 09-02-2005, 01:33 PM I ride the bus so it does'nt really affect me.
That's what I thought, too. I ride the bus. I'm lucky.
Then, I found out yesterday that the bus drivers are going on strike on wednesday. Many of my co-workers take the bus to work. We're all going to be late for a while.... Looks like I'm in a bit of a fix...
Max Whittaker 09-02-2005, 01:37 PM wowww ive been living in a bubble at college and haven't even driven anywhere since last saturday so i was surprised when my mom told me gas is up to $3.19.
You go right back into your bubble. It's going to get a lot worse.

Well buses need gas too.
Max Whittaker 09-02-2005, 02:16 PM Well buses need gas too.
It's a labor dispute. It's been going on for a few months now, and it only just hit the fan! I'm so mad! This is the worse time for a strike. It's their biggest season!
A lot of people, including myself, will be looking for other mods of transportation, or will simply miss work.
Kazza 09-02-2005, 05:48 PM Gas went up 17 cents in less than 2hrs here. Now we are in the $3 mark :grr:
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 09-02-2005, 07:30 PM I had to get gas today so I decided to get some after work. I drove by the station 2 min. from my house and noticed it said $2.89 so I figured Id just go there after instead of going to a place near work. I get here still under the impression it was $2.89 until I heard a guy mumble $3.09. Evidently Im stupid and was looking at the DIESEL price, since that was up at the top. Meangya.

Word. Gone are the days of me driving around just to waste gas.

Instead of using this as a wake up call to actively look into alternative fuels (ETHANOL), he tells US to stop driving. pissed: I hate him and his ten-gallon hat oil buddies.

No kidding! He's not going to do anything. Nothing's going to get done until it's almost too late. The oil companies have too tight a grip on us all!

Amen to that! Prices are well over three bucks here in So Cal and for the first time, my dad's forbidden me to go to the beach for more than once a week- unless someone else drives. It's insane how high the prices are and since our car is so old, it just EATS the gas up!
EmoJoe 09-02-2005, 11:36 PM From here it now ranges from like, $3.05- $3.20...last one I saw though was $3.08
Czas na Zywiec 09-03-2005, 01:17 AM $3.19 here in Boulder. And the highhest I saw was $3.45 for mid-grade at gas stations in Gunnison.
vienna waits 09-03-2005, 01:18 AM does anybody buy the fancy gas anymore with the prices so high?
Czas na Zywiec 09-03-2005, 01:30 AM ^^ I need to tank mid-grade because my car needs an 87 octance level, or else it could harm my car if it's any less. I once tanked the cheap gas accidentally and I could totally feel the difference while driving.
dawsongirl 09-03-2005, 03:17 AM does anybody buy the fancy gas anymore with the prices so high?
Here, the cheap gas is actually more expensive. The higher octane 10% ethanol blend is cheaper.
Max Whittaker 09-03-2005, 10:30 AM does anybody buy the fancy gas anymore with the prices so high?
A friend of mine does. It's the only thing he uses. At least, last I checked...
theshark8777 09-03-2005, 10:33 AM A friend of mine does. It's the only thing he uses. At least, last I checked...
Some cars require the high octane. I saw a special on it the other day, I think only like 35 models or something actually require it. Almost any car since sometime in the 1990s will take any octane though. But you can feel it if you are supposed to use high and you don't.
I rode by a Gulf station on east 23rd street this morning and super unleaded was going for $3.99 a gallon.
spunkygirl 09-03-2005, 09:18 PM It's $2.99 now, so it did go down, it was $3.09
Hollow 09-03-2005, 09:30 PM exactly WHY are the prices rising? if the actual value of it is rising, and the companies aren't just greedy, then all this "STOP BUYING GAS SO THEY'LL LOWER THE PRICES" bull **** is nothing but a huge TANTRUM.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 09-03-2005, 10:12 PM lolll um, my mom got gas today and it was like...3.39 for regular

It's all about supply and demand. There are more people needing gas than we can produce.
There's certainly no shortage of oil. It's all over the place. But we don't have enough refineries to process the oil. With all the vehicles on the road, the prices rise. When something like Katrina happens, and take the refineries out of commision, the prices rise once again.
And then you have price gougers, who raise prices to take advantage of people.
Regardless, it's all about the money.
IMakeBurgers 09-04-2005, 09:42 PM Wow, I sure am glad I dont drive.
dawsongirl 09-05-2005, 02:41 AM it actually went down 10 cents...and before the holiday no less. odd.

dawsongirl 09-07-2005, 10:49 PM $2.89 now. Yay. Here's the funny thing though. Station A is at 2.89. Station B, right next door, is 2.95. And station B wonders why everyone is at station A.
PZelda 09-07-2005, 11:21 PM  The station nearest to me is at 2.99/3.02 now. :D They no longer say $314, $317 or $329. They actually got signs WITH decimals in them.

dawsongirl 09-08-2005, 03:09 PM It's down to 2.79...naturally, because I just got gas at 2.89 yesterday.
