View Full Version : Could you eat Mel's chili?
seventies_sitcoms 08-11-2005, 09:10 PM If Mel's chili was so bad, why did people keep ordering it and sending it back if they already knew it was awful? That chili was his specialty too. puke:
No wonder they thought it killed that food critic in the diner. :rip: That chili was super thick and pasty looking. It looked like you could cement bricks together with that stuff. :woohoo:
I don't think I would want to eat anything from Mel's. His shirt was always chili stained. :eat: I don't care if Flo was my waitress or not.
robyrob 08-11-2005, 11:48 PM i think it was the only place in TOWN where you could get a bowl of chili - you HAD to eat it
Mr. Television 08-11-2005, 11:51 PM I could go for some now. The thicker the better. :D
Brian Damage 08-11-2005, 11:54 PM I love chili, so yeah, I'd eat it.

...but to answer the question, NO I couldn't eat it - but I would use it as bondo filler
I love chili, so yeah, I'd eat it.
That's because you're a moron.

You mean in the entire city of Phoenix Mel's was the only place that served chili? Well, I bet they have Wendy's.

I don't think Wendy's was serving chili back in those days. It's been around for only the last ten years, I believe.

Don't know exactly when Wendy's came out but I know my city didn't have one until the mid 1980's.

We got our Wendy's in the late 70's. It used to have that Victorian decor the chain had years ago.
GeorgeWBushGOP 08-20-2005, 03:10 PM They made the chili sound so bad on the show that it was almost irresistable to me to jump through the TV screen and eat a mess of it.
Ireneparalegal 08-20-2005, 03:13 PM You know how it is, something that is bad for you, makes you only want it that much MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Mel, pass me some of that chili!!!!!"
TV_Forever 08-23-2005, 04:55 AM Hi gang...
I think I would MUCH have preferred Carrie's chili...everyone at the diner liked her pies the best as I recall...
And if Flo would have served up the PIE...my OH my ;)
I bet since it was Pheonix, that chili was EXCEPTIONALLY HOT...if that is the case, while I would LOVE to try to eat it just for the memories it would give me of seeing all those folks at the diner, I'd have to pass...;)
GREAT TOPIC :)
seventies_sitcoms 08-23-2005, 10:37 AM If somebody didn't want chili, I guess they could go down the street to Barney's Burger Barn or whatever it was called.
dlemond 08-23-2005, 10:43 AM I love chili, so yeah, I'd eat it.
Ditto.
Regardless of what they said about Mel's, I'd try it.
You know how it is, something that is bad for you, makes you only want it that much MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's only one thing: chili isn't bad for you, though. There goes your theory.
Frump 09-26-2005, 01:06 AM It was REALLY good, they just liked to tease him about his food! It was commented several times it was the BEST chili in town and it's what made him "what he was in the restraunt" business,,,if THAT was anything:)

MMMM...sounds good. I wish there was diner in my town whose specialty was chili! :eat:
Frump 10-03-2005, 02:28 AM When I was little Mel's Diner always looked like a SEAFOOD restaurant to me,,I guess just b/c of the sea symbols from the navy and Mel wearing a "captain-like" hat.

Yeah, it looks like Mel's specialty could've been fish and chips. Wasn't his character originally from the east? I thought when Martha Raye came on she flew in from New York or someplace across the country.

It sort of looked like Mel could've been working on a fish boat or least as a cook in a "chow-dah" house in Boston.
Frump 10-03-2005, 11:15 PM Yeah we have a Captain D's where I live and a LOT of the decorations look like the one's in Mel's Diner.
Mel was from Ney York I think.
