View Full Version : Songs That Were Banned on the Radio
musicradio77 08-06-2005, 12:09 AM I know that songs that never played on the radio such as "Jungle Fever" by the Chakachas. That was banned from the airwaves because the song was inappropriate. There are some other songs that were banned on the radio. For example, Don would also like to note that Chuck Berry's "My Ding-a-Ling" dropped from the number one position at the other New York City Top 40 stations this week; WNBC, WNBC-FM, WXLO, WPIX; and WWDJ (Hackensack, NJ), where it spent five straight weeks as number one. This, "Cover of the Rolling Stone," along with "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and the spoken word recording "Americans" are the only other monster hits I'm aware of where WABC simply ignored the record, and its chart performance in the market. One urban folk tale is that the wife of WABC's General Manager heard "My Ding-a-Ling" and "ordered" her husband to take the record off the air, after it was played for two days as a Hot Prospect. ("Cover of the Rolling Stone" was allegedly banned because of the reference to cocaine in the lyrics, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" for profanity.). These are the songs that were banned from the radio. Any thoughts?
Steve M. 08-06-2005, 12:19 AM "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by the Beatles - banned by many U.S. radio stations for the lyric "Christ! You know it ain't easy, and some detected an unsavory pun in the lyric "We're only tryin' to get us some peace." It only got to number eight in the U.S. because of that.
TripperFan 08-06-2005, 12:26 AM I remember Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night" was banned from the Toronto area airwaves - not sure if it was nation-wide when it first came out.
ABlairican Pie 08-06-2005, 08:09 AM "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was banned by the BBC in 1984 for not-so-suggestive homoerotic lyrics.
Karen* 08-06-2005, 01:30 PM A lot of songs were temporarily banned from the radio because of 9/11, such as John Lennon's "Imagine" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
HuntingtonM15 08-06-2005, 01:42 PM Apparently, Loretta Lynn had 14 songs banned during her career. I know "The Pill" was definitely one of them, and "Rated X" was possibly another, but I'm not sure about the rest.
Many radio stations also refused to play Martina McBride's "Independence Day" when it was first released, due to the controversial issue of domestic violence, and because of that, I believe it only charted at #12. Ironically, she probably wouldn't be where she is today without that song.
Mikado 08-06-2005, 03:01 PM Hmmm none of those classic songs seem even slightly suggestive compared to todays potty-mouthed garbage... apparently, they stopped censoring musicradio just when they should have started !
Penny Lane 08-06-2005, 03:22 PM "Wake Up Little Susie" by The Everly Brothers was really controversial back in the 50's! :lol:It is about a couple who fell asleep at the drive-in movie and didn't wake up until the next morning. The lines that were objected to was;
"What are we going to tell your Mama
What are we gonna tell your Pa
What are we gonna tell our friends when they say"OOOOOhhhhh- La La."
Nasty stuff!
Cactus Jack 08-06-2005, 03:28 PM Seasons in the Sun shoulda been banned cause its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO horrendous
barwars 08-06-2005, 03:50 PM A lot of songs were temporarily banned from the radio because of 9/11, such as John Lennon's "Imagine" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
"What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong was banned as well.
Sadly, I remember someone called into a radio station and requested the song "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" on 9/11. The radio host called him a sick ****.
Mikado 08-06-2005, 04:19 PM "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong was banned as well.
 That song is a beautiful compelling classic about the beauty of life, Im not disputing that it was banned, but, do you know WHY ??? ( I cant even imagine a reason )
Mikado 08-06-2005, 04:22 PM Seasons in the Sun shoulda been banned cause its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO horrendous
Yeah, its one of the few Canadian contributions to culture that makes me cringe  ....But, at least it wasnt as bad as Bobby Goldsburrow's horrid "Honey" See the tree how big it grows...ARGGGHHHHHHHH!!!
hmmmmmmmm Anyone want to start a thread about songs that SHOULD have been banned? ;)

On and shortly after 9/11, it wasn't quite a wonderful world.
Steve M. 08-06-2005, 08:55 PM Randy Newman's "Short People" was banned because people took it literally and thought Newman was making fun of folks who weren't quite so tall. What's Newman got aginst short people, anyway, doesn't he realize it's stupid to hate people on the basis of their height? everyone said. It's also stupid to hate people on the basis of their race, religion, or ethnicity. That was the point of the song - that all bigotry is stupid! No one got it.
In Maryland, it's still illegal to play "Short People" on the radio. I'm not making that up!

Good, i hope it never plays again,,,I was a very short ( im only 5'1" ) teen when that came out and it once again, it brought out all the stereotypes about short people and gave the class bullies another reason to use me as their personal punching bag, to this day, if i ever was to meet Randy Newman, well, all I can say is I wouldnt feel any reason to be gentle in my response.
Steve M. 08-06-2005, 09:22 PM Beatles songs banned by the BBC -
"A Day In the Life" (for the lyric "I'd love to turn you on. . . ," beleived to be a reference to drugs)
"I Am the Walrus" (for its "indecent" references to "knickers)
Beatles songs that Spiro Angew wanted banned in the USA:
"With a Little Help From My Friends" ("I get high. . . .")
"Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" (an acrostic for LSD?  )

Steve M. 08-06-2005, 09:31 PM A ban on the Beatles's "She's Leaving Home" was proposed in the U.S. by someone who thought the song was about a pregnant teenager going off to get her pregnancy terminated; the "man from the motor trade" was said to be an abortionist, and the girl was "waiting to keep the appointment she made" to have an abortion. No, it was about wanting to buy a car; car salesmen are called motor traders in the U.K. Terry Doran, Brian Epstein's car-dealer buddy, was the chap referred to in the song.

Have you noticed that these "moralists" have the dirtiest minds and can read evil into anything with the drop of a hat? Who are the real sinners here?

That thing had to be the most embarrassing thing to come out of Canada since William Shatner!! Talk about sappy, horrible voice and WTF - they'd play it on a beautiful summer's day and if you listened to the lyrics, you wanted to kill yourself by the end of it!
Music to suicide to....

Ain't THAT the truth!
And I don't think anyone on earth would have come up with the listening to rock music backwards to get satanic lyrics if it weren't for our good friend, Jerry Falwell!

Speaking of cars. . . . In 1955, radio stations banned or bleeped out Chuck Berry's "Maybelline." The offending words were "Cadillac" and "Ford." most radio stations ddin't want to give Cadillac or Ford free advertising by playing the song uncensored!
