View Full Version : Anyone else here NOT have a cell phone?

I'm probably the only person left who still doesn't have one either. I don't really want one either. 1) I never call anybody on my regular phone, nor does anyone ever call me (I do get calls but it's rare). 2) I don't like talking on the phone period- I'm like scared of talking to people, even if I know them, and I'm afraid to answer the phone. 3) I never go anywhere really (except for work and a few places). Most of the time I'm home so people can reach me at my home phone. I know sooner or later I'm going to need one before I really want one!

Well I didn't get one until I was 18. I went off to college and was never in my dorm, so no one could ever reach me.

I have one but the only person who calls me is my mother. Seriously, all of my recent calls say "Home, mom's work, mom's cell.." Other than that, I dont get phone calls.

I don't. I don't really feel the need for one. If I need to use one I can just borrow someone elses. (I don't have to do this that often)

I got my first cell phone in June. Before that, I didn't need, nor want one. But, when I moved into my apartment, I chose to get it so I didn't have to pay for an in-home phoneline. I'm rarely home, anyway.

Kindof ot, but texting someone is nifty. Especially if you don't feel like carrying on a full conversation w/ them.

For the longest time, my mom, my sister, and I have shared ONLY two phones among the three of us. My sister is the more sociable one than me (phone calls from friends, dates, etc), and we all agreed to give one to my mom since she's always riding the bus. I was the only one without a phone. Then it got to the point where I was online A LOT with dialup internet (yes, through the old phone line), and I couldn't stay on for too long because of phone calls. I decided to become independence and add another line in our existing family plan. I JUST got my own cellphone this past May, so it hasn't been too long ago.

I don't even really get that many calls, anyway. Only my mom, sister, and co-worker friends are the only ones who call me. Not many others apart from that. I just have it more as an "emergency" thing, I guess. Plus, it serves purpose now that I am getting my own apartment in 11 days.

*raises hand* Don't own a cell phone, never will. Besides, I make all the calls via an online relay service anyway.

What's that?

It's for hearing impaired people like me -- basically it's a website where you input a phone number of the person/place you want to call, and you get hooked up to a Relay operator, who puts your call through. Pretty useful for people like me who don't have access to a landline. :)

I don't keep it a secret, but I don't talk about it much either. I think by now, half the regulars know I can't hear. So there you have it ;)

Yeah, I know sign language, it's my primary mode of communication. And I know ASL as well. :D I don't like the structure though...ASL isn't made to be grammatically correct, which throws me off. I live for grammar. ;) If I said "Do you want to go to my house and sleep overnight?" in ASL, it would be something like "You go my house sleep night?"

PZelda, I've always wanted to learn how to do ASL! I remember learning how to sign "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas" when I was in the fourth grade in the late 80s. I only remember a couple of words, unfortunately. I love languages, so there was a deaf student at my college who was in the hallway, and I wanted to make "small talk" by signing simple phrases, but I couldn't find any visuals online. By the time I looked them up on a computer, the student left!! I want to teach myself some basic phrases.

Do they offer ASL classes at the colleges in your area? I'd def. recommend it -- it's one of the fastest-growing "foreign" languages in the US from what I've heard. :) Sign language is technically not English, did you know that? So I actually know two languages, which is pretty dang neat.

You'd be better off purchasing an ASL book from a bookstore -- they're plentiful :D

Swedeace, like I said before I took ASL this past spring for a class. It was a fun class to take, but A LOT more work than I expected. You can't go into the class thinking it'll be really easy and a slack off class, like most people think sign language is when you take it. I guess it all depends on where you take it too. We had to do 10 hours of deaf community events as part of our grade. That was scary going out to places and events and you're like the only hearing person there and you barely know any sing language at all. Scary experience. It takes a lot of practice too! I wouldn't recommend taking a class unless you'll know you'll really be committed to it and study hard. Or else you can just get a book to learn it. good luck! :)

Yeah, it sounds quite complicated taking a class. And doing community events on your own DOES sound quite intimidating. Yikes! It's something I would NOT be able to handle. *gulp* I think I'll go with the book. Thanks. :)

I got one last fall. For starters, for about 3 months I couldn't access the mailbox, I'd call the provider, they'd confirm that the code I was using was correct, but still wouldn't work. Finally was reset and I lost all messages.

The only time it ever rings it's a wrong number!

Mine's just more for emergencies though since we live in a rural area and if my car broke down, I could easily call for help.

I'll bet it is. I know though that most people are more than willing to take the extra time to communicate.
I've worked with a couple of hearing impaired people before, and we'd get by with a combination of lip reading and signing. I was surprised at just how much of it I had forgotten though, but one in particular was great helping me with it on our lunch breaks. :)
I'd also quite often take calls for one of the workers in the plant - they had one of those special phones that translates written text. For whatever reason, it would freak the person at our switchboard out but I thought it was pretty cool!

I have one of those prepaid phones, but it has no time left on it and I haven't bothered to buy more time for the last six months. I don't like talking on the phone while driving.

Cell phones drive me crazy anyway. One of my best friends visits me all the time, and her phone never stops ringing. They're all BS calls too, nothing important. When we go out to the movies, shopping or to eat, she's talking on it in the car, parking lot, stores, whatever. She's gotten a little better since I told her that I think it's inconsiderate (rude) to be chatting on the phone so much when we're hanging out.

I find that very rude too. Dr. Phil even had a segment about it on his show. I also hate it when people take a call and seem to shout while they're talking - so that everyone around them can hear every word. Once in the bank, some guy was even talking about firing one of his employees - used their full name, salary everything - really ignorant.

I have one. Don't use it very often. I really only use free cell-to-cell, and most of the time it's to call my mom. I think eventually just as many people with a housephone in the country will have a cellphone. it's becoming more and more of a necessity, especially in case of an emergency.

I really hate when people are like that and constantly talking on their cell phones! You're in the grocery store and there's some lady just chatting away (and it's even more annoying when they're talking really loudly!) to their friend about stuff that's totally not important at all! It's like can't you wait to have this conversation until you get home?! I don't want to hear it! Sometimes I think that people who are constantly on their cell phones with friends or whoever are way to dependent on others and need to talk to people all the time. Like they can't stand to be alone and HAVE to talk to someone. I'm like the COMPLETE opposite of that, so I don't understand why people do that at all!
