View Full Version : Why would Florida say things in front of Michael
Ireneparalegal 08-04-2005, 10:01 PM Michael is already apprehensive abt having to use the bus to go to another school and then there is Florida saying to James in front of Michael abt how she has had nightmares abt the school bus being turned over with all those little kids on it. Why on earth would you say this in front of your child??? First it was James saying male chauvinistic remarks in front of all the kids now it was Florida's turn. Man, I know that apt. is small but give me a break.

I'm wondering was a school bus full of children really turned over around the time that episode aired? I was trying to do research on it.
Brian Damage 08-04-2005, 10:20 PM It must've been the WHITE writers who wanted that bus to really overturn. So they wrote it in the script. ;)
Ireneparalegal 08-04-2005, 10:21 PM probably. LOL
Zions Mother 08-04-2005, 10:53 PM Buses were being overturned in various cities in 1970. I'm not sure exactly how many years it continued.
Whether the writers wanted it to happen or not, it was happening in the 70's

I figured that's why it was in the script. I was just curious to know when it actually happened since I'm always interested in history
Brian Damage 08-04-2005, 11:06 PM It was just a sarcastic comment to a member named watchutalkinabout who made a wise a$$ comment to Retro.
Ireneparalegal 08-04-2005, 11:07 PM i got it Brian. I knew that's what you were doing.

Here's one:
1970 - -- Angry whites overturn a school bus that is taking young black school children to integrate local schools in Lamar. The state restores order and enforces the rule of law.
Ireneparalegal 08-05-2005, 12:13 AM thanx Zion for the info. i wonder if that's what Florida was referencing. but then again, there were similar incidents, unfortunately, it wasn't just one time

It could have been. She may not have necessarily been referring to an incident in Chicago since active protests were still going on everywhere.
Even 10 years after the law was passed.
1974 -When black students walked out of the school to get on the buses and ride back to their homes in Roxbury, a black ghetto, they were pelted with stones. Once on the buses, the students were hit by shattered glass as hostile crowds of whites threw heavier stones through the bus windows.
And these were not all in the south.

I recall seeing abt that on the history channel. It is so appalling and, God, I can't even begin to find the words to describe these violent acts. You know when Good Times first aired on CBS, this was the first time I had ever been made aware of school buses being turned over with children in them. I was 10 years old. I was so shocked. So if anything, Good Times was an educational tool for some of us.

In Florida's defense, she wasn't saying anything Michael didn't already know. Michael already knew that he wasn't going to be readily accepted at the predominately white school. Black children were made aware of exactly what was going on because they were facing it too. Plus, Michael followed everything in the news, on the news, and in books that had and was occuring.
That's why children marched along with adults during the civil rights movement. The children would be subject to attacks when their parents weren't present so they had to know exactly what was happening no matter how bad.
As far as James, we know that in most episodes, more than not, he and Florida would make the children leave the room. It was a human/parent error moment that all parents have.
TripperFan 08-05-2005, 11:28 AM God, with some of the stunts pulled by whites in the past, it still makes me ashamed sometimes of being white. I know there's good and bad in every race, but geez - you'd think in the 20th century we would have been more enlightened. I've just never understood how anyone wants to live their lives in hatred.

Gotcha Zion, thanx for enlightening me on that. You are so right, I just seen Michael as a child in that episode when in fact he is beyond his years. He is very well aware, you are right. I guess the mother instinct in me just kicked in.
What is a Myles, you ask?
On "Moesha", everytime things got a little bit serious, Myles was always being sent to his room, and even when he did know better about stuff, he was always chastised or sent off somewhere. So Myles ended up smoking the wacky weed and this resulted in him getting psychological therapy in which he confronted his family for not really caring about him and taking him for granted.
Just like Michael was. I'm surprised Michael didn;t end up the same way. He was just mad all the time on "Good Times". He was always told to shut up or to change his views even though in the long run he was right. It really ticked me off every time Michael said something with a lot of truth and sense, James was always threatening to put the belt to his behind. In some ways, I am like Michael myself- wise beyond my years, speaking the truth, and enlightened by the views of the world. My parents encouraged that because it shows that I was growing up. I wish that James and Florida had saw it that way too.

Well, I'm sure glad it didn't happen where I live. I'm in Long Island, New York and our school became integrated at the start of the 74-75 school year, and everyone got a long just fine. We had one kid who did a great "dynotmite," a la J. J., so maybe a show like Good Times helped ease any uneasiness anyone felt. One of the new kids actually became a good friend of mine for over the next several years. It's horrible what happens out there sometimes, I really wish everyone could see beyond the color of skin.
Maybe someday......
