I think it was almost nervous laughter, as audiences probably weren't accustomed to "comedy" shows introducing such serious subjects. Could be they were a bit shocked and didn't know how to react. Just my opinion! ;) Excellent point. I prefer the real laughter that was used in this show and shows like it though. Better than canned laughter added in. This show was like going to the theater.
