You'd think so judging by the cast of characters (fat stupid drunken dad, smart baby, mother trying to keep everything under control, etc) but it's actually quite different and original.

anyway.. FAMILY GUY. the simpsons is pretty damn funny but family guy is only about a thousand times funnier. i can't tell you how many times it's literally made me laugh myself to tears.

I wouldn't say "completely different." Family Guy is a cruder, crazier version of The Simpsons. I have seen many of the episodes and I have gotten some chuckles out of them, but if The Simpsons hadn't done it first, FG wouldn't have seen the light of day.

Yes, I'm a Simpsons man myself and I do agree that it's not as good as it once was. It's been uneven for the last few years. But overall, I still prefer it to FG. But if anyone likes FG over The Simpsons, that's cool too.

Its tough but I gave the upper hand to Family Guy it has made me laugh more, but the only problem with FG I see is they reference pop culture from the past that teenagers who are the main demographic don't understand for example: the episode when Death breaks his foot, and has to stay at the Griffin's house he says "You cant stay here, how am I going to explain you to Mr. Roper" teens are going to be all  "who's Mr.Roper" in the new season ive noticed they don't do that too much

Family Guy is superior at the present time, but the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons are better than FG will ever be IMO.

the pop culture references are one of the best things about FG.

Teens don't know who Mr. Roper is? have you seen the 100's of Three's Company fans here? the great majority of them were not watching when it was on ABC. I think it's great that Seth gives a wink and a nudge to other people of his age group instead of making the show with nothing but teen-friendly pop culture references, there was life before Carson Daly ya know

I agree the show should not be all teen-friendly pop culture references thats what makes it great, but once in a while they referecne something i don't understand

Normally I'd say the Simpsons(grew up on that show...still love 'em!) but Family Guy just has an edge that I adore(and truly makes me laugh out loud!) Simpsons haven't done that for me in years now, which is sad :( I still love them both, though. I voted Family Guy.

it's because Seth realizes he has fans who are a bit older and throws in obscure 70's references because he knows they'll get them

yeah. i wouldn't say they're "completely" different, they are comparable, but the simpsons doesn't have the randomness family guy does. al the flashbacks/references is part of what makes family guy so unique (and hilarious).

yeah, there are a hell of a lot of references to the brady bunch throughout the series ("come on, i'll make it up to you! i'll get you davy jones for your school dance!") as well as other classic sitcoms i don't think everyone would get. different strokes, facts of life, happy days, bewitched, i dream of jeannie, good times, mary tyler moore, sanford and son, mork and mindy, alf, silver spoons, growing pains, who's the boss, three's company and charles in charge are the ones i can think of. i didn't live through the 70's/80's though and there are still plenty i don't understand.

I picked The Simpsons.
Homer has already been recognized as a classic TV character (by TV Guide and others). I consider him to be the funniest character on the Simpsons and I don't think Family Guy has anyone who can compare to Homer.

There are also the one dozen plus Halloween episodes on the Simpsons, which is a good way to see the the Simpsons out-of-character, like a vampire Marge or zombie Flanders.

The Simpsons. I've been watching that show since it's been on the air in 1989. Actually even before that when it was on little clips on the Tracey Ullmann show. I was like 4 or 5 then!

I have started watching Family Guy for the first time this spring and it's pretty funny, too, but it doesn't beat the Simpsons!

Family Guy all the way. The Simpsons just isn't nearly as funny as the Family Guy. I agree with Sarah, the randomness is one of the things that makes it unique. Like my mind...

Family Guy's stayed consistent throughout it's run, and far better than anything the Simpsons are putting out these days, but Season 3 - 8 of the Simpsons can never be touched. Those will always be the best episodes of any cartoon series I've seen. Family Guy this new season has also been a bit lacking from the greatness of seasons 2 and 3, but it's still better than the last 8 or so seasons of the Simpsons.

And Futurama would be tied to Family Guy. I think it's also stayed consistent in its run. The continuity of its storylines and how everything in the early episodes become revealed explained in the later ones are great, but also all the random things that go down in the cutaway scenes in Family Guy are priceless. So I don't pick between those two. :D

Family Guy is ripoff of The Simpsons, yet it is still very funny. Current episodes of The Simpsons, if you've noticed, have become sort of a ripoff of Family Guy.

At their best, The Simpsons is the better show. Consistently, Family Guy has been better, but only with 1/6th of the episodes. Currently, Family Guy is funnier as well, although I still enjoy The Simpsons very much.

Yada, yada, yada.... I vote for The Simpsons.

I think there's ENOUGH FG fans.

FG is funny and everything, but The Simpsons is a classic that is on a level to its own. I like FG yet prefer The Simpsons, and so do a lot of other people. FG just happens to be the more popular show currently. They're in season 4. It'd be more fair to compare FG season 4 and Simpsons season 4... in this case, Simpsons wins. FG season 4 and Simpsons season 16 is an unfair comparison because FG still has storylines to tell, Simpsons has mostly exhausted and done everything it can possibly do IMO.

i agree you can tell simpsons has no plots left as evidence by the season finale lol i think it should end this season so it can go out on a high note

Simpsons is contracted by Fox until a season 20, and it'll end in May 2009. I know the show is a classic but I would say it's mostly run its course and its time to let it die, it's not like there aren't 360 episodes (exactly double the number of Seinfeld episodes) to keep fans satisfied already.

Family Guy is very funny but it is structurally derivative of The Simpsons.
The humor is very biting and black to the point of offensive, but gets great original jabs.

But overall as a show it pales in comparison to The Simpson's best (come on there's hundreds of episodes to pick from!).

And the supporting characters on Family Guy are nowhere near as good, I mean some just are bad.

Look at The Simpsons supporting characters:

Mr. Burns
Krusty
Moe
Flanders
Sideshow Bob
Apu
Smithers
Ralph
Nelson
Barney
Groundskeeper Willie
Mayor Quimby
Comic Book Guy
Lionel Hutz
Troy McClure

To name just a few! These characters are excellent, and Family Guy has nothing to compare to it.
