Thank you, I knew it was more
benjamoon 07-28-2005, 04:19 PM Well some of the shows you mentioned weren't "hits" (Phyllis, Sanford Arms, That's My Mama)
I'd say the era where the most HITS came out was
1984-1988
Cosby Show
Night Court
Growing Pains
Kate & Allie
Golden Girls
Valerie/Hogan Family
Designing Women
Perfect Strangers
Head of the Class
Full House
A Different World
Wonder Years
Roseanne
Alf
and I may be forgetting some
1968-1972 was the biggest era for groundbreaking sitcoms I think
All in the Family
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Julia
Maude
... I mean, those 4 right there are 4 of the most groundbreaking of all-time

I hated the 1984-1988 era, because it marks the beginning of the new blood in Hollywood.

I hated the 1984-1988 era because it marks the beginning of the new blood in Hollywood. And this was the when all of the good old shows (And It's Your Move) was cancelled.

You didn't leave any off the list, but you put two on there that weren't hits.
That's My Mama and Sanford Arms.

That's My Mama and Sanford Arms.
I added Sanford Arms as a Joke. That's My Mama was a Hit when it was brand new

Well That's My Mama was a hit that got KOed. It didn't capture the era like most of those shows you listed. That was a personal pick.
You completely forgot Alice...
TVFactFan 07-28-2005, 11:50 PM You completely forgot Alice...
Alice wasn't a hit during it's first season
benjamoon 07-29-2005, 01:25 AM Shows that are hits their first season mean nothing... Shows can start strong and fade fast
TVFactFan 07-29-2005, 05:27 PM Shows that are hits their first season mean nothing... Shows can start strong and fade fast
Well that's why 74-78 was a great era for NEW sitcoms. Some of them did fade but this thread was about certain sitcoms being INSTANT hits
Alice wasn't a hit during it's first season
Alice ranked #30 in the 1976-1977 ratings, which is much more than I can say about That's My Mama...

That's my Mama ranked #31 after 74-75 season
Well then. Put "Alice" on the list.
TVFactFan 07-30-2005, 05:02 PM Well then. Put "Alice" on the list.
I have to do more research before I put Alice on the List
Brian Damage 07-30-2005, 05:10 PM Alice should be on your list.
Dean Winchester 07-30-2005, 05:20 PM Alice was a top 10 hit for four seasons, if that's not a hit, what is?
Oh well, at least you never tried to say that Roseanne and Home Improvement WEREN'T hits
Other shows that should have been on the list...
"Eight is Enough" - ranked #23 in the 1976-1977 season...higher than "What's Happening!!" did...
"The Love Boat" - ranked #14 in the 1977-1978 season...
"Mork & Mindy" - ranked #3 in the 1978-1979 season...

I did forget to add Mork and Mindy. But Alice did not have a Good First Season

#30 isn't bad
TVFactFan 07-30-2005, 08:33 PM #30 isn't bad
I don't think CBS was that happy with #30-lol
Dean Winchester 07-30-2005, 08:59 PM I don't think CBS was that happy with #30-lol
#30 usually is impressive for a freshman unless it's one of two things: stuck in a timeslot which should guarentee better ratings (like a lot of the shows NBC killed on Thursdays in the past because they lost so much of Friends' audience, even tho they were still top 15 programs) or a highly anticipated spinoff to a show, like Joey.
It did better than That's My fricken Mama and in the long run was much more sucessful.
Looks like whenever Clifton Davis hears about TMM, he should be saying "That's my low-rated ass show..."

a show that will be on DVD in 3 weeks. Alice will be on DVD in well I don't know-LOL
A show that is almost completely forgotten.
Alice was on television for nine years and had a sucessful run in reruns on TNN. It was even on I Love the 80s!
