View Full Version : Is Chico a Sanford and Son clone?
GARFIELDKOOL 07-21-2005, 10:49 AM They have 2 principle charcters, an older and a younger one. Chico took place in a car garage, S&S a junkyard, Redd Foxx had lots of catchphrases, Freddie Prinze had that lookin' good phrase. They both took place in LA. Is Chico and the Man a copycat of Sanford and Son?
tylersmistress2002 07-21-2005, 12:50 PM um..in a word.... NO.
they did use the same set but to call them a clone is insulting.
Luckymama58 07-21-2005, 02:02 PM Peter Baldwin directed both shows as well as many of the popular sitcoms of the day. I am guessing that the look of the shows and some of the humor could have been crossover. But they were definitely two different shows with two different producers. James Komack was also the producer of other TV shows, but not Sanford and Son. I suppose it would be like comparing all the family oriented sitcoms that are on today.... they all are humor about families, but all have their different premises.

mlingerfelt 07-21-2005, 07:10 PM I call it a white version of SANFORD AND SON I remember FRI nights back to back.
Prince 07-22-2005, 02:14 PM I don't really find them similar at all. Redd Fox and Demond Wilson just didn't have the chemistry that Freddie Prinze and Jack Albertson had. It was like magic watching Freddie and Jack work together, you could tell they had really grown to love each after 3 seasons...but I never felt that on Sanford and Son. Maybe that's what makes Chico and The Man stand apart from the rest. Just my opinion.

No because Chico was not related to Ed

No way JOSE.................. Anyway i never found Demond Wilson Sexy! :p :p :p
hue_mee 07-23-2005, 10:56 PM I agree with Macca. Freddie and Jack had such wonderful chemestry throughout the whole first 3 seasons. I was watching the Boxer episode today and was smiling over the scene where Ed holds Chico's hands and tells him about his bright future of a mechanic. I thought that was touching
Karen64 07-24-2005, 09:53 AM I'll agree there were some similarities...(cranky old man who yells alot, young guy with optimism and dreams for the future, poor neighborhoods, both settings were intentionally full of junk and clutter)
But CATM was also about 2 different races, (Ed, who hated "Mexicans", and Chico, who loved everyone), struggling to get along.
The chemistry between Redd and Demond was amusing; but the chemistry between Jack and Freddie was AMAZING! :tehcool:
JMO
I agree with Macca and also you could feel that chico and ed grew to love and respect each other, and they weren't even a biological family on the show whereas on sandford and son they were playing real family and (IMO) Fred sanford acted like he really didn't like lamont at all that show really irritates me
tylersmistress2002 07-26-2005, 12:40 PM I agree JOY.... Fred didnt even LIKE his son most of the time..where u could see Eds affection for Chico.....
I remember a couple of scenes that choke me up..when Chico was gonna move out... and he asked Ed you'd miss me? and one closing scene... when Ed had his hand on CHicos shoulder and said "Goodnight Sweet Prince"
THAT LAST ONE really tugs at my heart....
TVFactFan 07-26-2005, 01:53 PM I thought it was a Sanford and Son clone until I watched CATM
and aunt esther and aunt connie are nothing alike LOL
TVFactFan 07-26-2005, 03:20 PM I just wish these two shows could have crossed over, Fred meets Ed-lol
I can see the sparks flying now and either in the junk yard or the garage it could be an explosive meeting! LOL
Cheryl Harrell 07-26-2005, 05:49 PM This would make a great fanfiction! :) Hints to fan fiction writers... :) <g> :D
megamanj2004 09-09-2005, 07:02 PM This is quite interesting, seeing as how both shows aired back-to-back and taped at NBC's Burbank Studios. Whereas Sanford and Son was set in a junkyard and were more the amusing type, Chico and the Man was set in a car garage and were more the emotional type. But the two shows were done by different producers. Norman Lear did SaS, James Komack did CatM.
True, some S1 eps did act like Norman Lear's typical sitcoms when Chico said the phrase "Eeeh's not my problem!", showing the attitude of a lazy Mexican.
And let's not forget that unlike SaS, CatM had a death in one of its main cast members during the run.
Other than that, it was NOT a SaS clone!

It's easy to think these two shows are clones if you didn;t come along during the 70's
Prince Michael 10-20-2012, 05:17 AM Do you remember the episode of Chico and the Man where Chico is standing next to a stack of tires, and inspecting one especially badly -- slashed tire . He hollered "HEY, ED, WE'VE GOTTA STOP BUYING OUR USED TIRES FROM SANFORD AND SON !" .
Cheryl Harrell 10-21-2012, 12:29 AM I remember that and got a big kick outta it. I think both shows were filmed on the same set. I read that somewhere and that they would interchange between set back drops going back and forth between both shows.
