View Full Version : Tom Hanks Mikado 07-12-2005, 03:52 PM Tom Hanks, the guy who played a crossdresser on the Bottom-of-the-barrel awful sitcom " Bosom Buddies " , IS "the greatest actor of our time"....Boggles the mind, doesnt it? :eek2: Janice 07-13-2005, 01:03 AM I personally don't think that Tom Hanks is the best actor in the world, but I certainly think he's one of the best. He knows how to pick great roles. He just knocked me out in Philadelphia. Bosom Buddies...you gotta start somewhere. Today he's got a couple of Oscars on his mantle. :) TripperFan 07-13-2005, 01:15 AM Yeah I have to agree with Janice. I thought Bosom Buddies was goofy too, but he's sure done a lot better than Peter Scolari (who, of the two I liked better initially). I'd said he's earned a lot of respect over the years. He's amazed me in several of his movies - like Apollo 13 and Forrest Gump - right up there at the top of my list! Mr. Television 07-13-2005, 01:23 AM Tom Hanks is my favorite current actor and as Forrest Gump would say " and thats all I got to say about that. " TripperFan 07-13-2005, 01:24 AM Tom Hanks is my favorite current actor and as Forrest Gump would say " and thats all I got to say about that. He is one of my personal favorites though. I mean it's like he touches something, and it turns into gold or something. The man can act, direct, and I believe he also produces too. He seems like just an average guy, somebody that everybody can relate to. Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 03:03 PM Bosom Buddies wasn't THAT bad of a show. I actually miss "fun" Tom Hanks, he's too pretentious and Oscar-minded these days, I liked him back in the 80's when he was about making fun movies instead of aiming for Oscars. Heart Shaped Box 07-13-2005, 03:06 PM I really like Tom Hanks. He's one of my personal favorites. I think his movies are really good and he is a great actor. Plus..I just love Forrest Gump! :D Mikado 07-13-2005, 03:43 PM I'm not going to say he's the best. He is one of my personal favorites though. He seems like just an average guy, somebody that everybody can relate to. That "average guy" thing is what MAKES him great:) ....think of the great classic movie actors: Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart, they could be anyone of us, and thats WHY they were the greatest, To me, Tom Hanks is the true heir to this legacy....who'd have thunk it when he was on Bosom Buddies??* * the whole point of this thread;) Mikado 07-13-2005, 03:47 PM Bosom Buddies wasn't THAT bad of a show. Hmmm...interesting thought...anyone else want to see Tom hanks doing comedy again? :bonk: *MIBabe03* 07-13-2005, 03:55 PM Hmmm...interesting thought...anyone else want to see Tom hanks doing comedy again? :bonk: (raises hand) I kind of would like to see that. I doubt it will happen though. The last movie he was in that could be considered a comedy was "Ladykiller", or something like that. I saw it and I consider it to be a dark comedy. Dean Winchester 07-13-2005, 04:14 PM Hmmm...interesting thought...anyone else want to see Tom hanks doing comedy again? :bonk: I think very well he could be like Jim Carrey and do one mindless comedy followed by a very good and Oscar worthy serious role, keep going back and forth. I think it's helped Carrey actually because even tho he shows he can be taken seriously (Eternal Sunshine, Man On The Moon, Truman Show, etc..), he's not about to stop making fun comedies that are meant for entertainment and nothing more (Bruce Almighty, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, etc..) I didnt see that...the trailers disturbed me  *MIBabe03* 07-13-2005, 04:17 PM I didnt see that...the trailers disturbed me   The movie was kind of disturbing and screwed up. I've never been a big fan of dark comedies. barwars 07-13-2005, 04:17 PM Tom Hanks is indeed the greatest actor of our time. I too miss the "fun" Tom. The Money Pit, Splash and Big are all classics. I want to see him be funny again. The same for Robin Williams. TripperFan 07-13-2005, 04:21 PM Tom Hanks is indeed the greatest actor of our time. I too miss the "fun" Tom. The Money Pit, Splash and Big are all classics. I want to see him be funny again. The same for Robin Williams. I agree, he's done so many good dramas, that it would be fun to see him go "light" again. I'm just trying to think of what kind of comedy they could put him in. Or even a blend of funny/dramatic moments like in The Terminal. One minute he had you laughing at something and the next on the verge of crying for him. *MIBabe03* 07-13-2005, 04:22 PM Tom Hanks is indeed the greatest actor of our time. I too miss the "fun" Tom. The Money Pit, Splash and Big are all classics. I want to see him be funny again. The same for Robin Williams. Yes! I agree and I too would love to see Robin Williams be funny again. For some actors it seems to work if they go from comedy to drama (Hanks). I think Robin should have stuck with comedy. I have not enjoyed any of the dramas he's been in. Hehe Getting off Tom Hanks for a sec, speaking of bad Robin Williams Dramas, anyone remember the gawdawful "World according to Garp"? < Ok, i supposed it was a "dramady", to be exact, but, it was truly puke: making! ( If you actually liked this film, sorry, in advance  ) Mr. Television 07-13-2005, 05:05 PM I would love to see him do comedy again. The critics never thought a lot of most of his 80's comedies but I find them all quite enjoyable. BTW I saw Ladykillers and I loved it. IMO it was a very funny film. Mr. Television 07-13-2005, 05:10 PM Bosom Buddies wasn't THAT bad of a show. I actually miss "fun" Tom Hanks, he's too pretentious and Oscar-minded these days, I liked him back in the 80's when he was about making fun movies instead of aiming for Oscars. I loved Bosom Buddies. I think it probably could have lasted longer. I just didn't like how they revealed themselves to the girls on the second season premiere. "revealed themselves"???? Isnt that illegal??? Mr. Television 07-13-2005, 05:20 PM "revealed themselves"???? Isnt that illegal???  I mean they told the girls that they had been dressing up as women. It sort of made the show ordinary although it was still good. The same for Robin Williams. I agree. I have liked Robin's recent sinister turns in Insomnia and One Hour Photo, but I don't think he's actually been funny in a movie since probably The Birdcage. TripperFan 07-13-2005, 05:31 PM I agree. I have liked Robin's recent sinister turns in Insomnia and One Hour Photo, but I don't think he's actually been funny in a movie since probably The Birdcage. Oh I LOVED the birdcage. It was played PERFECTLY!! Its one movie and can thoroughly enjoy over and over again. Mikado 07-13-2005, 10:33 PM Oh I LOVED the birdcage. Well......unless youve never seen it  ( like me ) TripperFan 07-13-2005, 10:37 PM Well......unless youve never seen it  ( like me ) If you've got an open mind to gays, you'll love it. Its funny and touching - but more funny than anything. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are perfect in it - along with Hank Azaria as their "houseboy". It's really good. Mikado 07-14-2005, 01:29 AM hmmm yes, its an English adaptation of Cage au Folles, isnt it? Well, i have nothing against gay men, but, I wouldnt want to marry one ! Rhiannon 07-14-2005, 12:22 PM I love just about every movie he's ever done. TripperFan 07-14-2005, 12:28 PM hmmm yes, its an English adaptation of Cage au Folles, isnt it? Well, i have nothing against gay men, but, I wouldnt want to marry one ! Yes it is. Not to be insulting, but they probably feel the same way about you Michel! I'm sure you won't lose any sleep over it tho. :p ;) My hubby's a pretty big homophobe, but he enjoyed it. Robin Williams son from a previous marriage comes home from college to announce his engagement to a wealthy girl and he wants her to meet them. Her parents are very conservative, so he asks his dad if he could tone down his "flaming lifestyle" - this involves redecorating their beautiful home and trying to "masculine up" Robin's lover, Nathan Lane. It's hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. ;) Hey - I know you have an open mind! I only remember a few parts when Nathan's character is trying to walk like a man and then their houseboy is cleaning and listening to music. It's hilarious.  Mikado 07-14-2005, 05:54 PM Yes it is. I don't know how often I've thought to myself "what a waste!". ;) Chelsea - ya - those were a couple of the scenes I was thinking of too - especially trying to get Nathan not to flame as much. Its making me want to see it again now. Mikado 07-14-2005, 06:48 PM  They DO usually keep themselves in top notch form! I mean, when she first came out in the 1980's, she kinda had an Elvis thing going on. what woman or gay man wouldn't find this attractive if they didn't realize it was a girl? LOL http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002LE9.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg You're right! When I first saw her early in her career (she was big in Canada before the States obviously), I couldn't quite figure it out - to me, she was a great looking guy (actually reminded me of this Hungarian guy I used to date) but she wore these crazy western skirts with plastic farm animals attached to them!!! She's what I call a, "Pat" type - you're not quite sure at first. ;) I still love her music, but she's packed on some poundage there. That's a great photo of her though. Mikado 07-14-2005, 11:20 PM That's a chick? Damn, that's all I'm gonna say. Yeah, and if you wonder why were talking KD Lang in a Tom Hanks thread...hes playing her in the film biography !!! :D * Seriously though...we dont HAVE to talk about Tom Hanks...anything quirky from showbusiness seems to fit right in ;) * I was kidding, btw  Mikado 07-14-2005, 11:24 PM I love just about every movie he's ever done.
