I came across this link with a list of 100 of the most popular gay songs. I found it interesting that Abba's, Dancing Queen, came in third. My brother, who is gay, told me that Dancing Queen is usually the last song played in the clubs he goes to.

Maybe some of our gay members (and others) can shed some light on the accuracy of the songs listed or add to the list.

I remember when the song, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, by Steely Dan, came out, I heard it was about a reluctant gay person, spooked by his first gay encounter. Looking at the lyrics, it makes sense.

Rikki Don't Lose That Number
( Steely Dan )

We hear you're leaving, that's ok
I thought our little wild time had just begun
I guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and run
But if you have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

I have a friend in town, he's heard your name
We can go out driving on Slow Hand Row
We could stay inside and play games, I don't know
And you could have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

[break]

You tell yourself you're not my kind
But you don't even know your mind
And you could have a change of heart

Rikki, don't lose that number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki, don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home

Vogue deserves #1. I know gay men who hate Madonna but still love that song. That song sums everything about her up and I would say is easily the definitive recording of her catalog, even tho Into The Groove and Like A Prayer are closely behind it.

The list seems more cliche, like "how many gay icons can we fit on the list" instead of actually focusing on the songs. I love Melissa, but the song choices they picked for her weren't ones I'd have used.

I'm surprised there's no Kylie Minogue on the list, I'd say she's easily the biggest gay icon of the past decade (barring the likes of Cher, Madonna and the sort who have been icons for ages)

Beautiful Soul, by Dusty Springfield

Here are the lyrics, if anyone wants to know.

Beautiful Soul.
(Margaret Adams)

I wonder where you are, lovable lady
I wonder what you're thinking, beautiful woman
It seems like fog is settling in within your eyes
And the weight of something is pulling your shoulders down

Could it be you ask too much, lovable lady?
From a world that's out of touch, beautiful woman
So you're hammering at a door that will not open
And your beautiful soul is weeping

Better learn the way it goes
Oh, better share the pain that shows
You wanna transcend it in order to end it
But your loneliness grows

Ah, ha, do you hate yourself, lovable lady?
Can I be of help, beautiful woman?
Your silence is a wall between the two of us
And my beautiful soul is weeping
Oooooooooooh

she's not gay. She's a GAY ICON. there's a difference.

A gay icon is an artist, regardless of sexuality, that gays and lesbians adopt as a role model, icon, whatever. Madonna, Cher, Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, even Britney Spears (well, the younger gays like her) are all examples of gay icons.

Forget the clichés. This is not a dance song or a Broadway tune. And it's not sung by a diva. Instead, we have a leather-clad, metal-studded hard rock front man singing about the adventures and dark side of nightlife. Priest lead singer Rob Halford’s coming out was loud and proud and shocking to the metal community and the world at large. We truly are everywhere.

this song was big LONG before Rob Halford came out, and if any Judas Priest song from that era could be considered a "gay anthem", it would be "United".

Look around
They’re moving in
Hold your ground
When they begin

We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they’ll never get near
Then they can get out of here

Gonna keep on driving
Never stop

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

So keep it up
Don’t give in
Make a stand
We’re gonna win

We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they’ll never get near
Then they can get out of here

Gonna keep on driving
Never stop

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

(repeats chorus until it fades out)

Good question about the differences between gay icon and gay community of fans. Their music is often played at gay club scenes. I know there are so many gay male fans of Ace of Base. But it has nothing to do with the band members themselves. Is that what "gay icon" entails?

well, while Ace Of Base have plenty of gay male fans, it's more for the music. People like Madonna, Cher, Streisand, Bette, are as celebrated for the style and personalities as for their music. Hell, Liza Minnelli's a bigger icon for BEING herself than for any of her music

It's like when people say something is "gay", when it really has nothing to do with homosexuality.

For example.... "Did you see that movie? It was gay."

That's interesting, because even though Rob Halford is gay, I don't think the band ever tried to write from the gay perspective (he's the only gay member). But I think a lot of times it has to do with the audience's interpretation of it that makes it a "gay" song (and having a gay frontperson helps). Like the case with "We Are the Champions" by Queen, the "gay anthem". But Judas Priest songs have all been about empowerment, either personal, or that of metal fans, etc., even possibly that of gays. Rob Halford admits that he is not considered a gay icon, primarily because heavy metal has been considered a "heterosexual" form of expression (even though there does often seem to be homoerotic undertones).

I've never heard the #1...

::commits suicide::..... 'Vogue' is perhaps Madonna's signature song and video. Surely, you've heard some of her other songs, right?

Lyrics:

Strike a pose
Strike a pose
Vogue, vogue, vogue
Vogue, vogue, vogue

Look around everywhere you turn is heartache
It's everywhere that you go [look around]
You try everything you can to escape
The pain of life that you know [life that you know]

When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for, so

Chorus:

Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music [move to the music]
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow [go with the flow]
You know you can do it

All you need is your own imagination
So use it that's what it's for [that's what it's for]
Go inside, for your finest inspiration
Your dreams will open the door [open up the door]

It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it

(chorus, substituting "groove" for "move")

Beauty's where you find it
Not just where you bump and grind it
Soul is in the musical
That's where I feel so beautiful
Magical, life's a ball
So get up on the dance floor

(chorus)

Vogue, [Vogue]
Beauty's where you find it [move to the music]
Vogue, [Vogue]
Beauty's where you find it [go with the flow]

Greta Garbo, and Monroe
Deitrich and DiMaggio
Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean
On the cover of a magazine

Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rogers, dance on air

They had style, they had grace
Rita Hayworth gave good face
Lauren, Katherine, Lana too
Bette Davis, we love you

Ladies with an attitude
Fellows that were in the mood
Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it

Vogue, vogue

Oooh, you've got to
Let your body move to the music
Oooh, you've got to just
Let your body go with the flow
Oooh, you've got to

One of the first songs I thought of was "A Little Respect" by Erasure.

In the first season of Scrubs it was a prominent theme in one episode, though it had nothing to do with homosexuality. A very good episode actually.

And Captain Ablairica, it has to be the first time I ever saw anyone mention Pete Shelley on this website.

I didn't think "Homosapien" was much of a gay anthem.

I don't even know if Shelley is gay, but he was the leader of the Buzzcocks, a very underrated band.

The Goldfinger Theme
I Will Always Love You
Over The Rainbow

Biggest shocker of them all were the two Carpenter songs(Rainy Days And Mondays and We've Only Just Begun) as well as Over The Rainbow. I know that it can mean the same thing to others as does Close To You which is not on the list. I was surprised that In The Navy wasn't on this list as well.

91. "Losing My Religion," REM

Michael Stipe's recent public coming out didn't cause much controversy. Neither, surprisingly, did this song, even though religion and sexuality can be interesting and prickly bedfellows. Stipe said at the time he was inspired by a waitress who said she worked so hard that day, she was "losing her religion." ....................................................................
88. "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions," Queen

Forget the sports arena associations. This was revolutionary songwriting. Queen, led by gay frontman Freddie Mercury, showed the group's innovation with this two-sided single from the late '70s. The lyrics, loosely analogous to the gay pride movement, are both moving and inspirational. .....................................................
45. "We Shall Be Free," Garth Brooks

Every movement talks about support both from within and "outside." For gays, this means "straights." The struggle for equality can’t work without them. That’s why Garth Brooks' song about personal rights and freedoms is so important. He’s straight, hugely famous, and asks his hordes of country fans to love one another, and let everyone else love who they choose.
42. "Under Pressure," Queen & David Bowie

David Bowie had already declared himself bisexual when this unique duet appeared on the scene, though Queen front man Freddie Mercury only came out soon before his tragic, AIDS-related death. It's not surprising that so many listeners felt certain that the boys were singing about the pressures of being young and gay.

32. "Tainted Love," Soft Cell

Marc Almond and his band Soft Cell were touted to be part of the first ever large-scale gay music festival before it was abruptly canceled last summer. Often cited as one-hit wonders, this bit of pop brilliance (sometimes combined with a "Where Did Our Love Go" fadeout) sounds as good today as ever.

DUDE! Those are my favorite songs!!!!!

I know he wrote the song, but I've always heard rumors that he was gay and supposedly came out last year, but I didn't think that was true.

Your post just made it seem like he was openly gay.
Yeah, I probably worded it wrong. I didn't mean to indicate that he's gay. I've never even a heard a rumor along those lines.

Wow, when did Paul Schaffer come out?... I thought he was still married, and to a woman!

have you ever read the lyrics to Diana Ross' "Muscles"? Michael Jackson claims to be heterosexual and wrote that, the lyrics to that song are far more homoerotic than It's Raining Men when you consider both were written by heterosexual men

I am straight too and I like more than half of the songs on there, but there are some surprises to me.

I'm surprised you're shocked about Over The Rainbow. The gay community has been stereotyped with The Wizard Of Oz for so long. I never really got it but the gay community had the nickname "Friends Of Dorothy" for ages. I never truly understood it, likely because Judy Garland was considered the first "gay icon". A bit before my time though.

 If I didn't know better, I'd think I was a gay male - I love all those songs!!

If you changed "Girls" to "Gays", you could add Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun to the list!

lol, I'm sure drag queens can identify with Girls, lol

check these lyrics out.... this makes It's Raining Men sound like something guys would be thinking up at a Super Bowl keg party, lol!!

She said she wants a man
To always understand
But that's alright for her
Still it ain't enough for me

And she said she wants a guy
To keep her satisfied
But that's alright for her
But it ain't enough for me

Still, I don't care
If he's young or old
(Just make him beautiful)
I just want someone
I can hold on to

I want muscles
All, all over his body
(Make him strong enough)
(From his head down to his toes)
I want muscles
All, all over his body
(Make him strong enough)
(From his head down to his toes)

They say they have to see
His real personality
But that's alright for them
Still it ain't enough for me
I need what the eyes can see, ah
(His anatomy)
If that's alright for them
Still it ain't enough for me

I don't care if he's young or old
(Just make him beautiful)
I just want some strong man
To hold on to

I want muscles
All, all over his body
(Make him strong enough)
(From his head down to his toes)
I want muscles
Whooooa-ho-ho, all over his body
(Make him strong enough)
(From his head down to his toes)

Muscle man, I want to love you
In the sun, or on your body
Come with me, high in the cascades
Let this be, we've got this thing made
Lost at sea, hide the desert
Stay with me, you won't regret it
Take this love, so deep to swim in
Come to me, and let the love in

She said she wants a man
To always understand
But that's alright for her
Still it ain't enough for me

I don't care if he's young or old
(Just make him beautiful)
I just want someone I can hold on to

I want muscles
All, all over his body
(Make him strong enough)
(From his head down to his toes)
I want muscles
Whoooa-ho-ho, all over his body
All over his
(I want) muscles
All, all, all over his body
(I want) muscles
I want all I can get
All over him, all over him
All over him
(I want) muscles, muscles, muscles...

I think John meant to say Madonna (unless Madge is a nickname in the gay community????)

I think Madge is a nickname for her in general.

Really? I've never heard it used for her before. Wonder where it comes from.

Dumb question alert: John, this one may be for you. My brother and his friends have this thing for Wonder Woman, the old tv character (Lynda Carter). They've got mugs, fridge magnets, anything they can get their hands on. They dress up as her at costume parties.

My brother jokes and does that goofy Wonder Woman twirl (when she's turning into a superhero).

Is this just a silly thing among my brother's circle or is Wonder Woman a gay icon, for lack of a better word?

A number of other songs on this list are shockers to me.

Son Of A Preacher Man--Dusty Springfield
Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In--5th Dimension
I Will Survive--Gloria Gaynor
Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia--ABBA

And speaking of Dusty Springfield, you would think that Wishin' And Hopin' and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me would have been on this list instead of Son Of A Preacher Man. The same for ABBA,you can probably think Take A Chance On Me and The Winner Takes It All would have been on this as well. How did Aquarius and I Will Survive get in there anyways? Then again, how did Mama Cass Elliott get in there??

yep, Wonder Woman is definately a tv gay icon. Samantha Stevens (Bewitched) and Jeannie are also.

lol, how many gay men do you know? I Will Survive is like the biggest disco anthem of all time. If I ever have to hear a queen perform this once more at Kareoke, I'll pull my hair out! lol. ABBA is almost self-explanatory. Just look at the title to Dancing Queen. Mamma Mia was immortalized as a "gay classic" thanks to the movie Priscilla:Queen Of The Desert.

People said that We Are the Champions was a 'gay anthem', but I don't see how because Freddie Mercury said he was thinking about football when he wrote it.

well, the lyrics may be about football, but if you think about how far the gay community has come in the past 20 years, you could understand why gays and lesbians feel passionately about the lyrics.

well, while Ace Of Base have plenty of gay male fans, it's more for the music. People like Madonna, Cher, Streisand, Bette, are as celebrated for the style and personalities as for their music. Hell, Liza Minnelli's a bigger icon for BEING herself than for any of her music
Ah, I see now. Gotcha. Thanks for explaining.

I don't even know if Shelley is gay, but he was the leader of the Buzzcocks, a very underrated band.I think Homosapien should be a gay anthem. It was banned by the BBC from the radio in 1982.

I did mention Peter Shelley in my 80's Rock and Roll History thread (Part 1), when the Buzzcocks broke up, he started getting into dance music.

Homosapien

I'm the shy boy
You're the coy boy
And you know we're
Homosapien too
I'm the cruiser
You're the loser
Me and you sir
Homosapien too
Homosuperior
In my interior
But from the skin out
I'm Homosapien too
And you're Homosapien too
And I'm Homosapien like you
And we're Homosapien too

And I think of your eyes in the dark and I see the star
And I look to the light and I might wonder right where you are
All the gods in the sky way up high see the world spinning 'round
But the sun and the moon and the stars are so far from the ground

I'm the shy boy
You're the coy boy
And you know we're
Homosapien too
I'm the cruiser
You're the loser
Me and you sir
Homosapien too
Homosuperior
In my interior
But from the skin out
I'm Homosapien too
And you're Homosapien too
And I'm Homosapien like you
And we're Homosapien too

And the worlds built of age are a stage where we act out our lives
And the words in the script seem to fit 'cept we have some surprise
I just want this to last or my future is past and all gone
And if this is the case then I'll lose in life's race from now on

Homosuperior
In my interior
But from the skin out
I'm Homosapien too
And you're Homosapien too
And I'm Homosapien like you
And we're Homosapien too

And I just hope and pray that the day of our love is at hand
You and I, me and you, we will be one from two, understand?
And the world is so wrong that I hope that we'll be strong enough
For we are on our own and the only thing known is our love
I don't wanna classify you like an animal in the zoo
But it seems good to me to know that you're Homosapien too

I'm the shy boy
You're the coy boy

I don't wanna classify you like an animal in the zoo
But it seems good to me to know that you're Homosapien too
I don't wanna classify you like an animal in the zoo
But it seems good to me to know that you're Homosapien too
I don't wanna classify you like an animal in the zoo
But it seems good to me to know that you're Homosapien too

Is "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople (written by Bowie) on that list?

And how about the entire Anne Murray catalog - including her Beatles covers? She's supposed to be big among lesbians!

Also, "Last Song" by Elton John.

a lot of lesbians I know turned against Anne Murray over allowing her album being promoted on the Dr. Laura show several years ago.
