View Full Version : Which movie ruined Hollywood??

American cinema is considered the best in the world, which of course, is a crock. It was the best cinema in the world until the big studios assumed more control over the studios to make bigger and more spectacular blockbusters with no artistic value for maximum profits.

The period between the late sixties and the late seventies was considered Hollywood's last golden age for movies like Bonnie and Clyde, Midnight Cowboy, Medium Cool, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, M*A*S*H, Chinatown, The Godfather, Save the Tiger, The Conversation, Taxi Driver, and others. So which movie ended this era? Here are the choices:

Jaws, because it kicked off a wave (no pun intended) of summer blockbusters.

Star Wars, because it kicked off an era of movies with overreliance with special effects and it also kicked off movie merchandising.

National Lampoon's Animal House, because it led to the following - scatological teen movies, scatological frat-boy movies, movies starring "Saturday Night Live" alumni, and John Landis flicks.

National Lampoon's Vacation, because it gave the film's screenwriter, John Hughes, carte blanche to make all of those self-important suburban Chicago-based upper-middle-class teens angst movies.

Rocky II, because it created the moron movie genre and ensured Sylvester Stallons a place in movie history - and let to awful movies whose titles all end in Roman numerals. (In the original Rocky, Rocky Balboa did not defeat Apollo Creed, but Rocky II allowed him to beat him in a rematch and then beat his opponents in Rocky III and Rocky IV turning him from a lovable South Philly boy into an invincible cartoon.)

Some other movie.

What's your vote? :D

I'm voting for Rocky II, for the reasons listed above. Jaws was a decent latter-day Moby Dick, Star Wars, despite its special effects, was still an intelligent sci-fi flick, Animal House gave us Tom Hulce and Tim Matheson (and John Belushi could have been a great actor if not for his untimely death), Vacation reminded me of the failed vacations my family took, and besides, not all John Hughes films were awful.

Rocky II sucked, but it didn't ruin Hollywood. Everything else is great though.

A "None. Don't Agree" option would have been good for those with a different opinion.

I don't think any of these movies ruined Hollywood, and I liked them all. People love blockbusters and special effect movies. They did way back when too with The Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure. Go way back to the King Kong movies and those types. Special effects have advanced and so has the viewer's demand for them.

There's still a balance of commercial and independent films going on today.

Now if you want to talk about a movie causing a negative impact on Hollywood, a very good case could be made for Gigli.

It was a tough one between Star Wars and Rocky, but I went with Star Wars because it bore the throngs of geeks!

I truly think Hollywood went down the drain with Ishtar!! Stick to singing Babs!

Actually Barbara Streisand was not in Ishtar.

And I'll say this again, the first half hour of Ishtar is hilarious.
The songs that they come up with are hysterical.

Oh right - it must be her recent Dustin Hoffman connection that confused me! The Barbra Streisand one I'm thinking of was Yentl!!

my choice would be "other".

Even though it was a very cool movie and was groundbreaking for it's time, I would choose Terminator 2. Once that movie showed how far you can take special effects, Hollywood started quickly coming up with movies that emphasized "cool effects" with very to little plot. And it's still plaguing the industry to this day.

Granted, there was Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future, BEFORE T2, but the difference is that those movies would've been fun and entertaining even without the effects because the stories were intriguing. A lot of the SFX orgies like Armageddon, ID4, etc... were bad movies masked by "cool effects".

I'm more partial to the "Breakin'" series myself.

I'm sure everyone has noticed how everyone has to have those kind of special effects in action/adventure movies.

I think a good case could be made for any of those films ruining Hollywood, but maybe you should go with a crappy series like Die Hard, that featured nothing but violence and special effects, maskerading as a story!

In my opinion The Passion of the Christ ruined Hollywood because it was a movie that made a ****load of money even though it wasn't made by Hollywood, and wasn't even supported by Hollywood.

Die Hard With a Vegeance had a funny scene with Bruce Willis driving a taxi and chasing a car through Central Park with Samuel L. Jackson in the taxi, complaining that Bruce drives like he's aiming at the pedestrians in the park. "I'm not aiming at anybody!" Bruce protests.

Suddenly, you a hear a thud.

"All right," Bruce says, "except maybe that mime!"
